At Least I Don't Wear 'Em With Panty Hose

I don't know about you girls, but I think some things in life should simply be outlawed. I have a running list of things and phrases that we would all be better without, but I am here to share with you my most recent item on "The Ban List".

Drum roll please.....

SWIMSUITS.

Oh. My. Gracious. Sakes. Alive.

I set out for a cute new suit on Saturday and ended up with a dressing room full of misfits and frustration. At one point one became STUCK TO ME and my arms were twisted and tangled over my head as I hopped around on one foot wanting to SCREAM. It was a sight to behold, girls. I seriously thought the blasted thing was there to stay, and I also worried that my arms were going to never come down from around my neck. It was bad.

Okay, you know those little tankini ones? Well, they make me look deformed. I seriously looked like a 83 year old freak. I adjusted the straps, tied them tighter, looser, in-betweener, yet still, I was misshapen and miserable.

Bikinis are obviously out of the question (my hips don't lie), the one pieces were not cute by any stretch of the imagination (imagine nursing home swim wear) and obviously the tankini's just didn't do it for me.

So, I picked myself up and walked right out of the bathing suit section and straight into the work out section. I bought some little black shorts that resembled a modest bathing suit bottom, and a tank top that felt like bathing suit material with built in "coverage", which is a necessity for sure. I pranced out in it on Saturday, ready to take a dip with my littlest man, and Husby told me that I looked cute and that it looked just like a swimsuit.

SUCCESS!

It basically looks like this : (except mine is green and black)

(and the shorts I have aren't quite so tight)

You know I would model it for you guys, but I don't want you ladies to be green with envy at my super hot post-baby bod. Tee Hee. *Note: Sarcasm.

So girls young and old, take heart when trying on bathing suits. You are absolutely not limited to the options they display in the "summer section". Hop on out of there and head toward the work out section if you can't find something that makes you feel good about yourself. The options are limitless and you will probably feel so much more comfortable. I know I do!

Do you have any bathing suit secrets you'd like to share? What's your preference?

  1. My secret is to shop at Athleta...I have a very curvy and muscular body, with no chest to speak of...the Athleta suits fit real women like me, flattering and good coverage for the rear and also look good on top without making them dissapear! And they're meant to move, which means you can swim, run and jump and they stay where they should!! I only shop the sale items of course, so each suit only costs me ~$30!!!!!

  2. Grr...I am with you. Bath Suits are the worst at this stage of life. Glad you found a good alternative. I'm not ready to opt for the granny swimsuits yet either.

  5. They don't even look like work out shorts! Good thinking! I am all about cute womens board shorts over the top of my bikini for some coverage :)

  6. My secret is that I hate swimsuits.
    That's it. I said it.

  7. Shopping for swimsuits can be so stressful... I really like the Speedo sculpture suits. They are made of shaping fabric and have adjustable straps and bust support. It is sad to think that at the age of 27 I am already wearing old lady suits!

  8. That's a really good idea! I had to go buy a swimsuit this past weekend and it just put me in a FOUL mood. I've also gotten caught in the stupid elastic that's supposed to provide "support" (HA!) under your boobs and panicked that I was going to have to call someone for help. Thankfully I've always been able to free myself. :) I'm glad I'm not the only one.

  9. What a great idea! I have had the same bathing suit for forever and my husband HATES to swim (the one big difference we have...) so I don't have the occasion to wear it that often. When I finally go to look for a new one I am going to take your advise and widen my horizons! :)

  11. I am SO with you. This year I DID find a suit I liked though. It's a one piece, but the bottom part comes down around the top part of my hips--like a vintage suit in the 50's would. But it's strapless so I don't look like a total grandma. And it ruches all the way down, which deflects from any rolls ;-)

  12. Lime Ricki. I found this website a couple of years ago while trying to find cute modest swimsuits. The site is ran by some Morman girls, aparently it is very important to be modest in their religion. I have 3 suits from them and have never been disapointed. They sell the tops and bottoms seprately, so 2 of my suits share the same bottems to save money. I love them because the tops are a little longer, the material a little thicker, so I'm not pulling and tugging on the suits all the time to make sure I'm covered. I promise I don't work for them, I just love their suits so much I tell everyone about them! Check out their website!

  13. I have 2 J. Crew suits that I love, but my absolute favorite bottom is a little swim skirt. It's pretty short, but it makes me feel a little more comfortable about running around in essentially underwear. (I'm rockin' the bikini as long as I possibly can ... until bambinos enter our lives.)

It makes me crazy when people wear swimsuits that they THINK look fab ... but don't. We saw a lot of that on the cruise. Some people need some ... support, shall we say? And triangle top bikinis don't quite provide that.

I think your "suit" is cute! Sounds like it works great for you, too!

  14. Yes, bathing suite shopping makes me want to cry. It's awful. But I did find a really cute on this year. It has a sweet heart top and it's all one piece, black of course, to hide my post baby pooch. Some people may think it's a bit granny...but I call it...retro ;)

  15. I got my swimsuit this year from Target (link is at the bottom), and I LOVE it! I am like you, since having kids I have hated swimsuit shopping. Ugh! However, I stumbled across this suit this year and have never felt this cute and confident at the pool! (post-baby) I love how the top fits like a real tank top... it's looser, not skin-tight. It has padding in the top in case it's chilly ;) and it comes with straps you can remove it you don't want tan lines. I didn't buy the swim bottoms that match this swimsuit... I just actually used a bottom I already had, and it's a swim-skirt. I like to try to hide the junk in my trunk. :) Anyway, I know this was a novel, but I had to share my wonderful find!

  16. I have crossed over this year (thanks to my post-baby bod) into the tankinis. I've never really been a fan of them before, but with my ever-present stretch marks, I appreciate them oh-so-much now!!

  18. I ordered a suit from spanx this year. It came with a little note that said something to the effect of you will feel like this suit will not fit you and you might feel like you are entering the ninth level of hell as you pull it on but once you get it on you will look like you should be in an itty bitty teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini. And, it will be comfortable once it's on! They are having a 25% off sale still I think ... If you don't follow them on Twitter let me know and I can find the code. A bit expensive ... But a serious miracle worker!

  19. I get 50's style one pieces from www.modcloth.com

    They are very forgiving

  20. Land's End has great tankini suits that still feel and fit "young"

  21. ugh, I so try not to bathing suit shop at all costs. I hate it. It's absolutely tortuous and should be outlawed.

  23. I just recently purchased a awesome one piece suit from Lands End. It's certainly one of the most expensive suits I've ever bought but so worth the money! I finally caved and bought a suit with actual cup sizes and I swear the material is like spanx. It sucks you in at all the right places. Being a young mom of a three year old I wanted a cute swimsuit that I was also comfortable in and this one did the trick!

  24. I went swimsuit shopping a couple of weeks ago, and it was definitely depressing. I need two different sizes for top and bottom, but I don't want to wear a bikini. I also need a top that won't let me fall out, but apparently they don't make those at the stores I've tried so far. One swimsuit I attempted to try on, I couldn't even get over my hips...my straight boy-hips. I doubt anyone other than a pre-teen could get that one on (and then she'd have to stuff the top). Thanks for sharing your solution! I just might go that route!

  25. i just have to say THANK YOU! for this post. i was in a department store and i couldn't believe it - they had either teenyweenypolkadotbikinis or swimsuits that my late grandma would have wore. umm hellllo? i don't have a perfect body but i deserve a chance! hahaa thanks for letting me know that i'm not alone!

  26. I found some tankinis (well, they're halter) at JC Penney that cover my belly and shows NO cleavage whatsoever which I really wanted. I think I posted a pic on one of your statuses, actually. I wear board shorts with it, too. I'm just way self-conscious about my body.

  27. Something that is SO depressing to me about swimsuits is that all the tops (even in the one-pieces) are made to fit cup sizes A-C. I am a D or DD, so I never find anything that will even fit; nevermind cute. It's insane to me that no matter what size the suit, the boob area doesn't get bigger. Sometimes I can find something online or Dillard's carries some D cups, but it makes me sad :(

  28. I love reading these comments...there's so much comaraderie among women hating swimsuits! Haha!

I still haven't lost all of my baby weight, and the thought of a swimsuit makes me want to hide. However, my little girl (16 months) will want to swim this summer, so I have to find one!

I found some great options at kmart.com (I know!), especially the Jaclyn Smith brand (I KNOW!). I've had some trouble with the website and I'm not sure how they fit, but I'm giving it a shot! :)

  29. I second the Land's End suggestion. Best built suit I've ever owned. Also, I recently found this A-DOR-ABLE and modest suit shop: www.limericki.com

    Good luck!

  30. I've had to buy a little cami in swimsuit material because I was visiting family and they had a pool, but I was without a suit! Wal-Mart was sold out of suits (in August!) so that's what I ended up with. It actually fit great and I still wear it instead of my regular suit.
