Entertaining Santa's Unaware.

Have you ever met a person and you walk away wondering what just happened? Like, it's just kind of supernatural or something?  I always wonder if those people are angels ... sent to encourage us when we especially need it.  Or, to see how we will treat them as everyday people.  When I sit and wonder how many angels I could have possibly come in contact with in my lifetime, it kind of boggles my mind.  You just never really know.

The other night we met my parents for dinner and to pick something up from them.  It was during Levi's AWANA at church, so when he got out we all went for ice cream so that he could see them for a bit and not feel like he missed out.  We headed to Braum's for a good old fashioned scoop of our favorite cream cone and made our way to an extra long booth.

Not long after we took our seat, my Dad told the boys, "Look! There's Santa Claus!"

I noticed the boys' eyes grow to the size of silver dollars and I turned around to see an old man with bright white hair and a beard to match - looking exactly like Santa.  He wore clothes that looked like he'd been working hard in them all day, and he smiled and waved at us as he sat down with his hamburger a few booths away.

He had a kind face.  He had compassionate eyes.

My back was toward him, and his back to me, but every time I caught the boys starting at him in wide eyed wonder, I would turn to look and every single time he was looking back. Smiling.  At one point, he put his reading glasses on (REALLY looking like Santa), and looked over at the boys and gave a wink.  At this point, Levi was losing his mind - he was eating ice cream next to the REAL SANTA!  He could not take his eyes off of him.

When we got up to leave, I turned back and saw Mom and Levi standing at Santa's table.  He was pulling out his wallet and he handed a card to Levi.  It read, "You just met Santa Claus! You must have been good!"

unnamed

He then handed him another card and told him to give it to his little brother.  Then I saw him stop my Mom and say something just to her.  She replied with a smile and then walked toward us with a funny look on her face - a look of bewilderment.

When she caught up with us and we stepped outside, she said, "Santa Claus just told me he appreciated my holiness."

What?

We were so confused.  So was she!  We talked about spiritual things and church during dinner, but that was at a completely different restaurant and Santa was no where to be found.  We hadn't discussed anything of that nature while we were having ice cream, so it's not like he overheard Mom talking. We hadn't even talked about AWANA, because Mom rode with us to the ice cream shop and they talked about it all the way there. We had only talked of silly things at Braum's - mostly funny stories about the boys as they climbed all over us and jumped from booth to booth between bites of ice cream.

"Yes, he handed me this card and said 'I just want you to know that I appreciate your holiness'."

In unison, we all slowly peered back inside the restaurant to see if he was still there.

He was.  Happily eating his hamburger.

But we couldn't help but wonder ....

"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unaware."
