Left or Right or Right or Left.

I often wonder which side of the bed is left and which is right.  Do you determine it by facing the bed or lying in bed?  Facing the bed, standing the foot, I lay on the left.  Lying down in the bed, facing the ceiling, it would be the right.  Right?  I don't know - I'm so confused.

I like to judge it by standing at the foot of the bed.  So, I sleep on the left.  I created a visual for those of you who don't want to put too much thought into this whole ordeal.

See?  That looks exactly like me and Husby.

I love when I wear big triangle dresses to bed.  It's my favorite.

I have found that whenever we are in a hotel room, I automatically go to the left side.  I know a lot of people determine what side they'll sleep on in a hotel by where the doors and windows are.  I don't do that.  I just go to the left instinctively.

The other night, lying there on the left side of the bed, I wondered if there was some sort of scientific data as to where most women sleep.  So, I googled it.  I couldn't find a definitive answer (surprise), but I read an article that said that people who sleep on the left side of the bed are generally happier people - and that there IS a "wrong" side of the bed for each person.

I was laying there smiling to myself, gloating in my super pretentious joy and happiness - laughing about how I am happier than Husby ... until I realized that maybe they were counting the left side from laying in the bed.  Therefore, I would be on the right.  Then I worried that maybe Husby IS happier than me and maybe I'm grumpier than I thought, and oh my goodness, I must be flat out depressed from sleeping on this side!

Dramatic.  I tend to be that way.

Have you ever tried sleeping on the other side of the bed than what you typically do?  It feels weird.  It's like I can't do it right.  My head won't turn the right way and I don't know how to fall asleep.  I try to throw my left leg off the side of the bed (while on my stomach) but it doesn't go anywhere.  It just keeps hitting more bed.  And then I get frustrated and go back to my side.  I only have attempted this when Husby works the night shift and I get all bored and try to conduct my own social experiments.

Since I'm no scientist and the closest I can get to an actual public survey is through my blog (because let's face it - I'm not going to survey the public face to face on this issue), I need you to help me out with my scientific data so I can make pie charts and write a pretend research paper while discovering a break through in sleep studies.  Imagine me in a white coat and glasses with my hair pulled back into a tight bun. With a pencil between my teeth.  Not in the bicycle t-shirt and oversized bright pink shorts I'm currently sporting. With a cookie between my teeth.

Which side of the bed do you sleep?
How do you determine the right & the left?

  1. I ALWAYS used to sleep on the right side of the bed (that is from the view of laying in bed looking at the the ceiling Right side) but then I had babies and the crib was on the other side of our bed...dilemma....so I made the transition to the opposite side. It felt weird. But I'm still there. Not necessarily happier, but not depressed either. My hubby couldn't care either way. He has slept against a rock before (seriously).

  2. I think if I were married I would sleep closest to the wall. You know, as if my husband were putting himself between me and (hypothetical)danger. I can't imagine marrying someone who I didn't know if they would want to protect me or not. Maybe that's just me.

As for right now, I have a twin bed so left, right and center are basically the same.

  3. When I'm lying down in bed, I sleep on the left side. It started because the alarm clock is on the right side of the bed, and since it's my husband who has to get up to the alarm clock, he could sleep next to it. (this was when the babies were little and I didn't work--those sweet children were MY alarm clock).

When my husband and I are in bed at the same time, I still sleep on the left. When it's just me in bed (I work nights as a nurse and sleep during the day), I sleep in his spot only because then it's much easier to make the bed afterward!

  4. I sleep on the same side as you. And I call it the left. I was actually thinking about this the other day because we're moving and in theory, I'd like to be on the other side of the bed. However, I don't think I can handle it.

  5. When not at home I totally decide where I sleep by the placement of the door. Hubby sleeps nearest to the door, then me, then the kids.

  6. I agree with a few of the comments before mine. I was always raised that the man should sleep closest to the door for protective reasons just as the man should sit at a table facing the door. I'm a rule breaker when I'm out of town though; I sleep closest to the bathroom so I don't trip and fall and hurt my clumsy self in the middle of the night :)

  7. This made me laugh :)

I judge it by standing at the end of the bed and sleep on the right. I've tried hubby's side and I end up lying there for ages, wide awake, trying to get comfy before giving up and rolling to the right side :)

  8. LOL- this was great! I sleep on the left side - and that's determined by lying on the bed. We always keep our same "sleep sides" if we are home or away! I agree with you - you just can't do it right if you're on the wrong side!! o:)

  9. My husband likes to sleep closest to the wall, always has for some reason so I end up sleeping on the left. Which is fine by me because I am a side sleeper and I can't sleep on my left side for too long.

  10. Hilarious! I sleep on the right side when laying in bed staring at the ceiling. My husband sleeps next to the door. . . mainly because we have animals and if I am next to the door, their running and playing all night keeps me awake. He can sleep through anything. When out of town, I sleep closest to the bathroom normally because I like having it just a few steps away. We don't normally care what side we sleep on, it's just the side the is most convenient for both.

  11. you are hilarious! if we are not in our bed husband sleeps closet to door so he can ninja attack if needed. or if we have an infant at that time i sleep closest to bebe's bed =D

  12. This cracks me up! I sleep on the "left" side too. Or at least the left side when standing at the foot of the bed and looking at it. I get really thrown off by sleeping on the other side when I travel. I like being close to the door/bathroom and away from the windows, but I guess that's not a general rule. Interesting.

  13. I've. Ever thought of right or left or how to determine which is which! There's "my" side and "his" side, lol. How you describe it I'm on the right side, and that side is vastly superior because when pregnant I'm a left side sleeper and that way when I was like a beached whale I could sleep on the edge of the bed and would only have to swing my feet down to get out of bed for those umpteen bathroom trips!

  14. I sleep on whichever side is closest to the bathroom or doorway. Unless I feel insecure. Then I will sleep away from the door (that way if a murderer decides to sneak in they'll get Tim first).

  15. I determine the side I'm sleeping on by how I am laying in it. If I'm laying down, staring at the ceiling, I'm on the left side.

  16. Ha, this gave me a good laugh. I guess I always sleep on the right side (based on standing at the end of the bed). When hubby and I first married, the left side was closest to the door and he had to leave for work before I got up so it just made sense. When we moved, we tried to switch it around, but then we had a baby and the right side was closest to the baby bed (and the door when the baby moved into his own room), so it just made sense for me to sleep on that side. When we aren't home I can sleep on either side, but at home I have to be on MY side or I can't go to sleep!

  17. I can honestly say, I'd never really thought about it. We move pretty often (every year- year and a half) and thinking back over the last 7 years it seems that we have switched with every move. Now you have me wondering if there's something behind switching with every move.. ;)

  18. You make me laugh and if you knew me you'd think I was crazy... I switch it up on sides of the bed to sleep. I get bored and/or wonder if it's cooler or more comfortable on the other side of the bed. Drives.My.Husband.Nuts. Once I even insisted we sleep with our heads towards the end of the bed just to see if it was better. My conclusion was that it was indeed much cooler and therefor comfortable (i get really hot when I sleep), my husband's conclusion was that he'd have to divorce me if I ever insisted we sleep towards the foot of the bed again (too weird for him). Ha!

  19. I also sleep on the left side, but I think the "sides" are determined by lying in the bed. I always thought I heard the tag on your sheets goes in the bottom right corner (which is the case if you are lying in the bed). Also to me the bed wouldn't be any different than a car. The drivers seat isn't on the right side is it? BTW sorry you got bossed the other day, I hate days like that.

  20. I used to sleep on the right side of the bed {standing at the foot facing the bed} and then I got married. It's literally the ONE area of our marriage where Brad hasn't budged an inch. He was like, "that's my side of the bed" the first time I tried to go for it. Over the years, I've tried to steal it back a time or two... to no avail. I've even used pregnancy as an excuse and he STILL didn't budge ;-) Now, he offers it to me sometimes, and I turn it down. Because, the truth of the matter is, he can't sleep for anything on the left side of the bed and so the next day I have a very grumpy hubby. But, if ever i'm sleeping by myself, I sleep in the center and I take up the entire bed

  21. So sad, I totally can't vote because I don't have a side beyond whatever side is nearest the door. I am the one who responds to the children at night and in the morning, so it depends on where the bed is in our room.
