Weebie Wednesday: Imagination!

The imagination exercises a powerful influence over every act of sense, thought, reason, -- over every idea.
Latin Proverb

Levi is at the age where he is really starting to use his imagination a lot. I absolutely love this because I remember all the fun I had as a child, simply from using my imagination. I want to encourage him to enhance that part of his precious little brain, and hopefully always be the type of person who can entertain himself and not need the distractions of television or the iPad.

I have started an in-home "Wee School" with Weebie recently and he absolutely loves it. We devote 45 minutes to an hour out of the day for learning exercises, Bible verse memorization, and other fun toddler-appropriate activities. I'll blog more on our specifics (if you'd like!) in a couple weeks when we really get our schedule down pat. Levi just eats it up! The great thing about toddlers is their excitement for learning! His enthusiasm makes me want to just keep teaching him and encouraging him to keep that mindset. Children are just such fascinating little creatures!

After wee-school, Levi loves to play pretend. He's always telling me he's a pirate or a superhero or a fireman or something. Always. Glam*Ma picked up several cute little play costumes for him a couple months ago so that he can go all out being who he says he is. He just LOVES picking out a costume and running around the house being whoever he chooses that day. It is the cutest thing. So far he as a Spiderman, Superman, Policeman, Fireman and Pirate costume. The police, fire and pirate costumes are Melissa & Doug and they are by far the best. The quality and little accessories that come with it are so much fun!

Oh, and when Halloween is over and all the costumes go on sale, I am definitely planning on picking some more up! This is such a fun activity to play with your kids and encouraging them to let their imagination run wild!

Yesterday we played pirates and after I put his clothes on him (he wanted nothing to do with the eye patch, so I wore it), I just kind of let him take the reigns and see what he would do. He immediately picked up his sword and started swinging it and laughing and looking through his telescope. He took out his map and studied it for a little bit and then said, "I need to go THIS way to find the treasure chest. There are COOKIES in the TREASURE CHEST!"

I laughed at what he imagined the "treasure" to be, and went along with him. I put an Oreo in a secret spot and then we used the map to find the "hidden treasure". You should have seen his little face when he found the cookie. Priceless!

He hopped on his pirate ship (ah-hmm, the couch), and spotted bad guys (he doesn't realize that pirates ARE the bad guys), and hopped down to get them with his sword. If I heard "AHOY, MATEY" once, I heard it a thousand times. He was good and worn out by nap time.

What a precious little pirate!!

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities.

  6. He's the kind of pirate I'd want to run into on the 7 seas! And I'd LOVE to learn more about wee-school! My niece is about a year younger than Levi, but I'd love to do something like that with her when we visit!

  7. 1,000 cheers! I was so frustrated when I worked at an after-school daycare how LITTLE imagination kids seem to have anymore, seemingly because of tv. Bravo for encouraging him!

  9. Yes, yes, yes! LOVE IT! I'm pretty big about hardly any t.v. in the daytime cause I want the kids to just learn "to be". Pretend play is SO MUCH fun. I remember mud pies when I was little and crushing up berries and mud to make "soup". Some of my best memories were me and my sister just dreaming stuff up. All of the trees were horses and we named them all...Ah...such fun.
Loved this post Whitney! So precious and cute!
