Watching the Weight!

I am sure a good chunk of you out there have decided to turn over a new leaf for the year and implement better eating habits for you and your family. I, my friends, am part of that chunk.

And maybe a little chunk(Y) if we're being honest, here.

Hence the reason I'm turning those leaves! ;)

A friend of mine adopted the Weight Watchers lifestyle a few months back and has steadily lost a good chunk (I've got to stop using that word) of weight. Nearly twenty pounds! I like the way WW works and how you aren't depriving yourself of anything, really. It's all about an awareness of what you eat, keeping track of it and simple ways to make healthier choices. It's also all about portion control and getting all of the food groups in our bodies each day.

You know, like God intended.

I started Weight Watchers on Monday and I am thrilled to string... er, GUIDE my little family along on this journey. I want to raise healthy little people and I know that it will not happen unless Mommy and Daddy are healthy first.

So look out, Jennifer Hudson - I may just be the new WW Spokesperson! I can see it now - my name in lights: The Glamorous Life of a Not-So-Chunky Housewife. Yes, that has a nice ring to it.

Please share any and all of your favorite WW recipes with me! I am stocking up to entirely revamp the way we eat. Sorry, Paula Deen. It had to happen sooner or later. All that butter has gone to my .... hiney.

Junk in the trunk has a whoooole new meaning.

Happy Tuesday, sweets!

  1. You'll do great! I did WW for about four months this past year and lost 20 pounds. I still have five more to lose to reach my goal weight, but it's been an enjoyable process so I'm not pressuring myself too much about these last five. I love WW because it's more about a lifestyle than a "diet." I'm no longer an official member of WW, but I continue to count my points and do the program on my own. I love it! The WW site has great recipes, but I also follow www.skinnytaste.com and she has great recipes that provide good WW alternatives to every day meals. Best of luck to you! :)

  2. Good luck with WW! I'm using a different program called "My Fitness Pal" (and its free!) I've been using it since October and have lost 12 pounds already. My goal is to keep up with it :)

Whatever your method its all in portion control and physical activity. There's no other secret

  3. My mom has been on WW for a couple years now (her second time) and in a year lost around 80 pounds I want to say. She did it all by following the guidelines and yoga once a week then upped it to twice a week. She is now a lifetime member and still loves being a part of WW.
Good luck you can totally do it! They just switched over there points system so I have my moms (still very nice) old scale and am learning how to use it. One of these days i'll have it figured out :)

  4. Before I had our little one, I lost 50 pounds on WW. It's a great program! Now, I just need to get back on board to lose this baby weight. I have a ton of great, low point recipes that I'll have to dig up. Though, I'm not sure how the new points plus program works. These would have all been calculated on the old system. In the mean time, here is one of my favorite side dishes that feels like a total indulgence:

    Oven Fried Onion Rings

    2 T. all purpose flour
    1/4 t. salt
    freshly ground pepper
1/3 C. plain dried bread crumbs
    1/4 C. fat-free egg substitute
2 large (8-ounce) onions, peeled, sliced 1/4 inch thick, and separated into double rings.

    1 serving (1 Cup):95 cal, 1g fat, 0g sat fat, 0mg chol, 245mg sod. 19g carb, 3g fib, 4g prot, 47mg calc = Points: 1

Sooooooo good and soooooo low in points! Good Luck!!

  5. I did Slimming World here in the UK and lost 3 stone! It's got to be worth it, hasn't it? Better eating habits have to be storing up a better future for you all. Keep us posted on progress.

  6. Hi, I just found your blog a few days ago & LOVE it! Good luck with WW!! You'll do great! I started in back in Aug & have lost almost 20 lbs....I hit a plateau around the holidays but at least no gain. :) I get a lot of my recipes from www.skinnytaste.com also. And www.cookinglight.com is a great resource as well because it includes the nutritional facts for all their recipes. Oh & I have found Zumba!! I hate to exercise but this is so much fun!! I am looking forward to reading your updates & new recipes you find. :)

  7. Well, you know my story.........joined WW and lost 70 lbs in about 6 months. Then, fell off the wagon. But, one of our goals this year is to reverse Dennis' diabetes so we are trying to climb back on that wagon. www.hungrygirl.com is one of my favorite resources. Also, I agree with the girl who suggested www.skinnytaste.com. It is a totally doable program and, like others have said, you don't feel deprived. You can work just about any treat into the plan if you just PLAN.

  8. Good luck girl, WW is great! I did it for 6 months a year or so ago and lost 25lbs-so it really does work!

  9. I also started WW on Monday! I love the new PointsPlus system...I've been a lifetime member since 2000 (on and off the program as I've had babies) so I've seen many programs come and go. My body is sreaming at me right now to get healthy and stop fooling around with all the unhealthy processed stuff!

I'm happy to join you on this journey...I look forward to some yummy point friendly recipes. If I come across any I think your family will enjoy, I will pass them along.

Good luck and happy healthy eating!

  10. Good luck! I know several people who have used WW successfully. I'm sure you will be one of them!

  11. I don't know anything about WW, but I subscribe to Cooking Light magazine and it's FABULOUS. I rarely cook recipes from anywhere else. It's a great way to go if you want to implement some new, healthy (and delicious) recipes into your family's diet. I highly recommend! Good luck Whitney! You're beautiful no matter what. :)

  12. I've done it in the past and had a fair amount of success. I'd say make sure to make a big pot of their vegetable soup (that is 0 points), and have it on hand. It's yummy and absolutely tides you over! Also, I would definitely say the WW cookbook is worthwhile. We've made so many recipes out of it, and I think there was only one we were disappointed in. (Wish I could remember which for you!)

  13. Oh my gosh, I LOVED Weight Watchers. I lost 15 pounds a few years ago with it and it was so easy. I've since put the pounds back on because I haven't been following it and that's my own fault, but, when you do follow it, the weight just falls off. Good luck!

  14. I LOVE WW!! I, too, think it is a great program. Before I had my first little one I lost about 50 lbs. As soon as my second little boy is born (March 31!) I am going to go back on the program. I bought a couple of their cookbooks, which are awesome. My favorite is their Pure Comfort cookbook that has a lighter take on comfort foods (so you don't have to give up Paula all together!). Here is a link to it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Weight-Watchers-Pure-Comfort-Favorites/dp/B000NJHKBA. Good luck with your WW journey!! :)

  15. I did WW to lose the baby weight last winter and it worked like a charm! Here is a super yummy, low points dinner recipe if you are interested:

  16. Thanks for sharing about the journey you're about to embark on! I did WW a few years ago and lost several pounds, but unfortunately didn't stick with it. I loved it though! I have always loved raw veggies, which are ZERO points, so dipping them in low-fat dressing or hummus is sure to fill you up without having to use up many points. I'm sure you've seen them, but Progresso (I think that's the one) has soup that says "WW 0 points", or something like that, right on the can. Those can be great lunch choices, especially in the winter when it's so cold outside! Keep us updated with your progress... I think you've just inspired me to get back on the WW wagon! :)

  17. My mom did WW way back when and loved it. It's definitely a lifestyle thing and less of a diet. I don't have any recipes but god luck with your quest! I can't wait to hear about your journey and see your transformation =)

  18. Weight watchers is an amazing program. My brother in law lost over 100 pounds, and he loves his food. I'm getting ready to start myself. Need to slim down some for my wedding come June. Best of luck, and I'll be sure to let you know of any amazing recipes I find

  19. Hilarious post! Your baby is adorable too.
I just stumbled across your blog for the first time. I'm 20 something, married to a med student too!

I did WW on and off since 2004. If you have to join a program it is definitely the best one out there. By far.

  20. There's a website written by a woman who lost 70 pounds on WW - www.ronisweigh.com. She has a side blog linked on the main page that has all kinds of recipes that include nutrition information and WW points values and stuff like that. I don't do WW, but I love reading her blog anyway.

  21. Good luck! I started WW on January 1st as well, can't wait for my first meeting tomorrow.

I love the WW magazine for recipe ideas, but I had the best luck with the WW cookbooks. My local library had a ton of them and I checked out everything I could find to get inspired. Then I kept notes on the ones that worked.

Also, I tried to just lighten up meals we already ate by making substitutions, adding more veggies, etc.

Can't wait to hear how it goes!

  22. I am curretnly pregnant, but am thinking about joining WW after the baby gets here in April. In the past I have used SparkPeople it is free - so I might use them again. I like knowing the calorie contents instead of how many "points", but since we will be moving because of DH starting residency it might be a good way to meet new people. I will have to think about it.....

I do like reading ronisweigh.com, I find it very inspirational yet real at the same time. She also has a cooking blog with tons of great recipies.

    Good Luck!

PS only 72 days until Match Day!!!

  24. Good for you! I did WW in college and lost my freshman fifteen. Fabulous program - It really is about an all-around healthy lifestyle. I admire you for holding yourself accountable and being brave enough to do it in a public forum like this! You inspire me to chronicle more of my quest toward being more healthy in my own little corner of the blogosphere.

Keep up the good work, girl!

  25. I did WW last year and lost 10lbs in about a month and a half, which is pretty good considering you don't want to loose weight too fast. I really want to do it again this year because I know I gained it all back. I LOVE WW online so I will definitely be doing that again. I wish I had a newer cell so I could buy the app. too.

Good luck and I'm here if you need a motivation buddy!

  27. Hi Whitney! Congrats on starting on the WW - I too started back on WW on Monday and am really loving the new Points Plus system they now have. Good luck to you - you will do GREAT! :) xoxoxo

  28. I think this is a ww recipe...my SIL told me about it.

Take one boxed cake mix and one diet soda...mix and bake.

It is a low calorie and low point treat (I am not sure of the points, but I have heard it is a 1 point snack?!?)

You can use dark colas (or any flavor) with chocolate cake and it will taste chocolatey

and if you use white or yellow, the cola flavor will carry over into the cake slightly... for example if you use a diet orange soda with a white cake it will taste a little orangey (if that's a word!)

  29. I'm sooo on the same page as you are. My baby boy is 15 months old and I'm still sporting 15 pounds of baby weight. Not acceptable. I joined WW and and working to stay on the wagon. Good luck! Post your progress!

  30. I just signed up for WW, too! I've heard such great things about the program. Good luck!!

  31. I just joined WW about 3 weeks ago. My little guy is 3 months old now and I never lost the last 10 pounds from my first pregnancy, so I decided it's time to get back to my before baby body. While it's hard to change the way I eat, I'm sticking to it because I'm already seeing results - I've lost almost 10 pounds already! Good luck!

  32. My friend and I are joining on Monday. I need to start exercising though. I think that's my main issue. Not enough movement. Good luck!

  33. WW is a great program and you will be very successful if you follow the program. I started a 28 day detox last week and will probably go back to following WW after that. I do love WW.
