Why A Woman's Work Is Never Done.

Sometimes I look around at the house at the end of the day and think to myself, "how did I break my back working all day long and still have SO much left undone"? Well, the other day I decided to jot down a few things that happened in my day and as I sat on the couch that evening and looked over the (THREE) pages I'd written, I came to a new understanding.

This is a "day in the life". This was my Tuesday. And this, my friends, is why a woman's work is never done.

* Wake up to a smiley baby. Change that baby. Feed that baby.

* Play time with the baby and start a load of laundry.

* Eat a bagel.

* Clean out baby's closet. Stop growing so fast, Levi! I can't keep your clothes organized!

* Baby starts to whine and is ready for a nap. I get his formula fixed and change out the laundry - washer to the dryer and new load in washer.

* Give baby his bottle and rock.

* Lay baby down and sneak out of the room.

* Make bed.

* Unload dishwasher.

* An antique bowl that my grandmother gave me slips from my fingers and shatters into a trillion tiny pieces.

* I stand there in shock and contemplate tears. No time for tears. Tears are for pansies.

* Spend 20 minutes sweeping the kitchen floor and vacuuming every last piece.

* While vacuum is out, I go ahead and vacuum the Living Room and Hall.

* Finish vacuuming and stand there thinking, "what was I doing? ... Oh yeah! Unloading the dishwasher!"

* Put away all the clean dishes and place a (seemingly) empty pitcher in the dishwasher. The pitcher unknowingly has about a 1/3 cup of red Crystal Lite still lingering which splashes out all onto the kitchen floor.

* Pull out my Shark steam mop and get after it.

* Floor is sparkling and I get distracted by my Topsy Turvy. I spend 5 minutes looking at/reading the box.

* Wait, what was I doing? Oh yeah ... dishwasher!!

* BZZZZZ!!! Change laundry loads. Washer to dryer and new load in washer.

* Finish emptying dishwasher and make kitchen smell like lemons.

* Pick up toys!

* Find some items for a yard sale in the hall closet while putting up the vacuum and mop and quietly sneak out to put it away in the garage.

* The alarm chirps a tiny "beep beep".

* Baby wakes up screaming. The ear piercing glass shattering and roaring vacuum weren't enough to wake him but the tiny chirps from the alarm? Ahhhh....! Of course.

* Feed baby lunch. Baby eats well and proceeds to throw the leftovers on the floor.

* Sweep the kitchen floor. (Gosh, by now this floor ought to be clean enough to eat off of!)

* BZZZZZ!!! Laundry. You know the drill.

* Riiiing!! Phone call. The laundry switch out will wait.

* Hang up and play with baby. (He pointed to my eye when I asked where my eyes were!!)

* BZZZZZ!!!! Oh yeah, I forgot.

* Barricade the hall to fold clothes.

* Baby gets around the barricade and dives into a pile of neatly folded towels. Awesome.

* Divert baby from the laundry by taking him for a walk (holding my hand) around the house and pop in Baby Einstein.

* Pick up toys!

* Back to laundry.

* Husby comes home early (Dear Husby, can you get off at 1pm every day for the rest of life? Please and Thank you.) and throws all of his stuff on the floor and countertops.

* I sigh.

* Hug hug kiss kiss and continue folding clothes.

* 2 PM. Oops, I haven't eaten lunch and my tummy is growling. Grab a Clif bar and iced tea and sit down for a minute to visit with Husby.

* BZZZZZ!!! Another load???

* Ignore laundry and try to put baby's new bookshelf together. Who am I kidding? I can't put a bookshelf together. I'm only doing it so that Husby will see, feel sorry for me and do it himself (ladies, this is a MUCH better tactic than nagging)!

* Husby takes over and I clean up his previous messes.

* Baby keeps trying to eat the tiny screws so I take him outside to play.

* Come inside and guess what? More laundry! Woo-hoo!

* Final load. Didn't think it'd ever come.

* Start thinking about supper.

* Remember the surprise dessert I was going to make for Husby.

* Forget the dessert because I should have made it hours ago.

* Put the bookshelf in proper place and organize his books!

* Read the baby 3 of those books.

* 4 PM and baby still hasn't had his second nap. His first nap was a joke because of the alarm incident. Mayday! Mayday!

* Put baby down for a nap.

* Fold the last batch of clothes.

* Pick up toys!

* Cook supper (with Husby's awesome help).

* Baby wakes.

* Kiss kiss kiss num num num.

* Eat supper and feed baby.

* Clean the kitchen. The lemony smell now smells like tacos. Make it smell like lemons again.

* Give the baby a bath. He has sweet potatoes smeared on the side of his face.

* Put away a thousand (give or take) piles of clothes.

* Crash on couch. A couch surrounded by toys.

* Mountains....and mountains of toys.

And ..... THAT is why a woman's work is never done. Just when you get going on one thing, something else happens that takes you away from the first thing and before you know it, you've done 18 other things that weren't even intended before you even remember the original task at hand! Phew! I don't know about you, but my heads a spinnin'!

So. All of you Stay At Home Mom's out there. If you have anyone ever ask you "what do you DO all day to occupy your time - sit around eating bon bons and watching soaps?", please direct them to this post.

Happy Mommying!!
I am a modern day homemaker with a passion for family, cooking, celebrating, decorating, travel, and memory making! The Lord has blessed me with the desires of my heart in my husband and our two sons. We recently built our dream home and cultivating a loving and happy haven for my family is where I find so much joy.

  4. I would go insane if I tried to do that many loads of laundry in one day! Holy moly woman! I do a load every day, first thing in the morning and that is IT.

    I'm sorry about your grandmother's bowl. I would have cried.

    This post makes me thankful that my boy is a year and a half now and doesn't need quite that much supervision and as many naps anymore. Makes housework a lot easier. :)

  5. lol!! I especially am all for making hubby put together furniture (etc) by looking hopelessly at it and attempting to make it. Busy busy days!

  7. YEP! That sounds about right. My coffee has been ready for an hour and I keep forgetting to go get a cup because of all the "fires" that have needed putting out already this morning.

  8. So totally on the money! Whew, wore me out and reminded me to go switch my laundry!
    I remember the days when I had 3 under 4 and trying to do all that AND go to school! It was insane!
    Hang in there, it gets easier once they start school, that is, if you think that adding: do homework to your list is EASIER by any means!

  9. I feel ya! It is so funny how much of your day I can relate to. Especially the parts about getting side tracked and forgetting what task I was tackeling originally! AND the part about the hubs coming home and throwing his stuff on the floor/table and the big "sigh" that follows :)

  10. I was a housewife for the first 3 months of my marriage...no kids...and STILL my work was never done. I can only imagine what it's like to add a baby to the mix. I imagine it's all worth it and I can't wait until I'm a stay at home mommy. :)

  11. funny! i currently have about 10 loads of laundry sitting in my office waiting to be folded. i am doing my best to ignore said clothes.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yes! I am the same (except through in a full time job plus being a full time mom and wife)...makes my husband understand why I crash at 9p every day! :)

  13. I am not a stay at home mom but that is my Saturday & Sunday to a "T".........I have to admit though while at work I make lists of what has to be done & can never finish one list before I start another one the next day!

  14. I'm not a stay at home mom but have to do all that stuff before/after I work - because I work from 6:30am - 6:30pm it does not leave me much time. It's amazing how much more efficient I am in the early morning/late night than I am on Saturdays when I have all day! I also don't have any children, so those chores aren't on my list yet.

    I cannot believe how many loads of laundry you do. I do two loads on Saturday and it includes my clothes, my hubby's clothes, my sister's clothes, and her baby's clothes. You must own a TON of clothing!!

  15. You missed a few things I think! =)

  16. I absolutely LOVE this post.. so very true!

  17. My baby isn't due until July, and I feel like I already do all that! What am I gonna do in July?? Better yet, what am I gonna do when I have to go back to work (full-time!) in September???

    Nice non-nagging advice. I should try it.

    Love your blog!

  18. "Tears are for pansies" made me laugh out loud! Hilarious.

    I'm a work-at-home wife and I can't believe how quickly the apartment gets dirty (even without a baby!). The dishes pile up as if by magic... The laundry seems to multiply while I sleep... And my sweet husband also has the tendency to drop his things all over our clean living room when he comes home.

  19. Oh my gosh, you just described my life. Change a few of the details, but it's the same schedule! I love how you write!

  20. I'm glad I could inspire you!! Good post. :)

  21. AMEN!!!
    I have two kids to distract me from all of my work, but it sounds a lot like my day at home.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Amen! Just wait til you have two kids...one that requires taking to and picking up from preschool. The laundry is almost an afterthought at that point...until hubby says "Um Sweetie, could you help me with laundry? I have no clean boxers." Oops!

  23. I have a "work journal" - Because I'm crazy organized. It has my "to-do" for the day/week, misc. projects and I put everything I want to accomplish at the top for the day and then fill in as needed...I should post one day out of it sometime, I bet it would be similar to yours with all the different upkeep thrown in there. There's nothing like having a little baby in the mix and I'm FREAKING out just a smidge knowing I'm going to have TWO little ones SOON. :-) It'll work itself out though, Hehe!!

  24. So true! That's pretty much my day. I did have a mom ask me that question once and I totally didn't even know how to answer. Next time I'll write it all down. I know I was exhausted just reading your post.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Now try doing all of that after you get home from a day of teaching school. Talk about crazy.

  26. I have a planner that I bought at the beginning of the year,I plan my weeks, I have a checklist of chores that I designate for each day. (Monday=vacuum,mop,trash out, etc. Tuesday, Friday=laundry, Wednesday=bathrooms, etc. (About ten things per day) Than I add stuff I do and check them off so I know what extra stuff I did, so at the end of the day, I know I have been productive. :)

  27. I wrote a poem about this not too long ago and cried the whole time I wrote it! If I can get over my inhibitions, I'll post it and let all you other SAHM read it! AMEN Glam Wifey you are wonderful!
