Why do some people say "Snuffleuphagus" (pronounced with an F sound, not P), when it is so clearly Snuffleupagus?
Who on earth ever came up with such a silly name anyway?
And what the heck kind of animal is he?
Hmmmm....why did I not question these things as a child?

Seriously...is he a weird scary elephant gone wrong or a massive anteater with a crazy amount of hair and woman eye lashes?
I need some answers, here.
Did anyone out there ever watch Mr. Dress Up? None of my friends growing up ever knew what I was talking about because we lived far out in the boonies so we had Satellite TV. No one had ever heard of him because it was a Canadian show. I couldn't fathom the entire world not watching Mr. Dress Up. He was my the best.

Canadian channels were apparently my favorite, because they also led me to my favorite kid songs singer and other favorite show - Fred Penner!!

Oh, Fred was amazing. I still know so many of his songs and I sing them to Levi. He was the best! I wonder what ever happened to him. Is he still alive? Does anyone else out there know and love Fred Penner or am I the only one? His show, Fred Penner's Place was wonderful. I remember the intro and so many things about it. I would love to get my hands on a copy of some shows.
My third favorite show was also Canadian. Imagine that! It was called Under The Umbrella Tree.

I can sing the intro to this show word for word and tell you all of the characters names. Oh gracious, this show was so much fun! Where did these classic shows disappear to?
One of the puppets on this show, Gloria, looks exactly like a real life lady that I know. I mean it is her TWIN. I would put a comparison picture up if I could, but she might read this blog and it might really hurt her feelings. So we will keep her anonymous. When we met her, I told Husby, "Oh my goodness, she looks just like Gloria Gopher from Under the Umbrella Tree"! I was blown away. Of course, Husby had no idea what I was talking about. It's sad that we can't discuss my favorite childhood shows together. He really missed out!
Hmmm. I'm not really sure where I was going with this post, starting out with Snuffy and ending with Canadian wonders. Oh well, it was a fun stroll down memory lane!
Any "lost" favorite TV shows out there that you had as a child and haven't thought about in years? I'd love to hear about them! Maybe you will remember some that I've forgotten about! (Especially if you're Canadian.)

Eh?
I loved Snuffleupagus when I was little!! I always wanted to eat cabbage because he did lol
ReplyDeleteMy favorite show growing up was Duck Tails! I actually have a dvd set of it now! :)
http://quirkynerdyprincess.blogspot.com/
Snuffy was actually originated as an imaginary friend of Big Bird's for some reason, and I don't remember why, they decided to actually give him a body and make it so everyone else could see him.
ReplyDeleteEureka's Castle is a show that few people remember. I only saw it a handful of times as it was Grandma who had cable and it was on nickelodeon or something.
Under the Umbrella Tree!!!! I was also a fan of the puppet version of Pooh Corner and Kids Incorporated. :D
ReplyDeleteI watched Fred Penner AND Under the Umbrella Tree right here in the good ol' U.S. on cable TV.
ReplyDeleteSnuffleupagus is pretty scary if you ask me!
ReplyDeleteI grew up on English tv :) postman pat and spot the dog haha
homemakertraining.blogspot.com
Mr Dressup!!!! Oh how I love him!! Yay for the photo! I'm Canadian and we had literally 2 channels in black and white while I was growing up in the forest.. I'm not kidding actually ;) Did you ever watch Mr Rogers? I didn't like him as much as Mr Dressup, but my sisters loved him!
ReplyDeleteI used to watch Fred Penner's Place!! I vividly remember how he used to go through the woods and climb through the hollow log at the start of the show and then go back out at the end. Classic. They don't make TV shows like the used to!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I also LOVED, loved, loved Fraggle Rock and can still sing the theme song.
ReplyDeleteI vaguely remember Fred Penner, but I was totally in love with Under the Umbrella Tree! I actually completely forgot about that show until you mentioned it. God, looking at that photo I can't believe how dated the show looks. Ugh, we're getting old!
ReplyDeleteOh how I love Snuffleuphagus! I believe he's just a giant elephant with hair! :)
ReplyDeleteOh I loved Snuffy! My favorite was Mr. Rogers, especially his Make Believe Neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteUnder the Umbrella Tree was one of my favorites!! My friends think I am making this show up as they never watched it ... glad to know I'm not crazy :)
ReplyDeleteI used to love Mr Dressup! He used to live around the corner from us :O)
ReplyDeleteA number of years ago his wife died in the city when she was hit by a car - it was so sad.
Did you ever see the Uncle Bobby show? It was filmed in the same place as Mr Dressup - we used to run into Uncle Bobby drunk as a skunk at the post office and grocery store lol!
I remember Under the Umbrella Tree! I didn't get to watch it much because we didn't have cable. My favorite shows when I was little were Pinwheel and Captain Kangaroo. I started watching Pinwheel before I ever saw Sesame Street. Snuffy scared me a little but I knew he was ok because he was friends with Big Bird.
ReplyDeleteI watched all those shows as well. I live in Canada so everyone watched them, this brings back so many memories. Gosh i feel old.
ReplyDeleteNever watched Mr. Dress Up but I ADORED Snuffy. Never once questioned what he was, just loved his fuzzy ol' invented-animal self.
ReplyDeleteI'm Canadian so I know about all those shows! And I once saw Fred in real life. I was still a kid and it was at my doctor's office. I wanted to go over and say hi and sing songs with him but my mom wouldn't let me near him because he was sick. He could have been there for a normal check up!
ReplyDeleteDid you watch School House Rock in between commercials? And the Log Driver's Waltz?
Loved Sesame Street. Apparently, that was the only time my parents could get me to eat. I'd be so absorbed they'd shovel in the food as quick as they could!
ReplyDeleteI loved Maple Town...no one ever knows what I'm talking about when I mention Maple Town. We lived in Hawaii at the time and I'm pretty sure it was a Japanese show, but I loved it. I used to collect all the little play figurines.
ReplyDeleteI also really loved Today's Special with the mannequins that came alive at night! OH! And the Elephant Show! I still sing Skinnamarink a Dinky Doo to my girls!
I loved "Today's Special" with Jodi and Jeff the manniquin and Muffy the mouse. Memories....
ReplyDeleteOkay, first of all, Snuffy always TERRIFIED me. I have a creepy uncle who looks exactly like him. I can't explain it, he just does. And the fact that I never knew he was imaginary until a couple of years ago really freaks me out too!
ReplyDeleteI loved Zoobilee Zoo!! I watched it all of the time! I loved the musical kangaroo girl! I think her name was "Wazzat" or something because she was always asking, "Wazzat (what's that)?" LOL
Okay, but seriously, I LOVE LOVE LOVED David the Gnome! Most of the people I ask about this show have no idea what I'm talking about. It was on Nick Jr. and I wanted NOTHING more than to be part of that magical world!!!
ooo I loved Under the Umbrella Tree :) I had no idea it was Canadian!
ReplyDeleteAnd I must have always said Snuffy's name wrong --I said it Snuffelumpagus. Like snuffel--ump--agus. Oh well, whatever.
SMALL WONDER!!! Loved that show... with the little girl who was a robot/alien? haha
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of any of those Canadian Shows. I loved Fraggle Rock and the Muppets!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of any of those Canadian Shows. I loved Fraggle Rock and the Muppets!
ReplyDeleteI have seen every single one of those shows. I lived up in Michigan pretty close to the Detroit/Windsor border so Canadian channels were kind of a staple in my childhood.
ReplyDeleteSomehow the show "Under The Umbrella Tree" always comes back to me and I'm so glad that someone else finally knows what I'm talking about! By far, on of the best childhood shows!
ReplyDeleteWITH JACOB, IGGY, GLORIA, AND THEIR GOOD FRIEND HOLLY!!
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I LOVED Under the Umbrella Tree! The Canadian shows were the best ... all of Nickelodeon was Canadian in our era!
That brings back soooo many memories of staying at your house!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have a ton of memories of watching Eureka's castle when I was at home sick, it always made me feel better :)
ReplyDeletePlease say you watched Today's Special, with the mannequin guy! So good.
ReplyDeleteI was also a fan of Romper Room, but they never said my name at the end :(
All the shows of my childhood <3
ReplyDeleteI don't remember much about the last one you mentioned, but I know those puppet faces well, so I know I watched it. Mr. Dressup was my hero. I was sad when he died.
Well, I am a bit older than you and your friends so mine are not the same. Does anyone remember Foreman Scotty? I loved Yogi Bear and Magilla Gorilla. The Shari Lewis Show with Lambchop. Yes, I go wayyyyyyy back!
ReplyDeleteSnuffleupagus was my favorite character on Sesame Street!
ReplyDeleteI also liked Under the Umbrella Tree. I was actually a little too old for it, but I would watch it when I was home sick from school. I have to admit that I faked sick a couple of days just so I could stay home and watch that show! :-)
Fraggle Rock!!!!!! It was the best!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite was Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street. As I got older I loved Fraggle Rock and the Mickey Mouse Club!
ReplyDeleteI remember the Umbrella Tree vaguely...
I'm Canadian so I know all of those shows! But in response to the Fred Penner questions ... he truly is alive and well. In fact just last year I was on campus at UBC (University of British Columbia in Vancouver) and he was playing in the bar. It was hilarious, we were rockin' out to Fred Penner!!
ReplyDeleteI grew up not far from Canada (and actually did not even know these shows were Canadian until you mentioned it) and loved all those shows too!
ReplyDeleteAlthough with Snuffie, he actually weirded me out because only Big Bird could see him. Although I think it made me dislike big bird more than having any effect on my opinions of Snuffie.
i live in ottawa, canada. grew up with all those shows and had the pleasure of re-visiting them with my kids.
ReplyDeleteUNDER THE UMBRELLA TREE was made here in ottawa, as was FRAGGLE RCOK..another fave.
thanks for the TIP OF THE HAT to canada, whitney.
love you and your family..♥
my sons are 23 and 26 yrs old - and we use to watch Fred Penner and Under the Umbrella Tree! as you know when you have kiddos you get to BE a kiddo sometimes! NOW, at 59 yrs of age, i get to be a kiddo with my grandsons!!! GREAT music from Fred Penner!!
ReplyDeleteI really likes under the umbrella tree too. My favorite singer was always Raffi. And I watched way too much TV as a kid to pick one show. But I loved Pioi longstocking movies and Kidsong or we sing movies. We sing in Sillyville probably topped the list.
ReplyDeleteyup, Under the Umbrella Tree was the best. I miss the good stuff on Disney.
ReplyDeleteI used to watch Under The Umbrella Tree!!
ReplyDeleteI live in Canada and I used to watch Mr DressUp and Fred Penner with my kids. We used to sing along to Raffi (another Canadian singer of children's songs like Baby Beluga) Now my grandchildren listen to Fred and Raffi's music. My daughter wants to take the kids to a Fred Penner concert. When I was a kid I lived in Michigan and remember watching Mr. DressUp and The Friendly Giant, Captain Kangaroo and Bozo The Clown.
ReplyDeleteGood Memories.
ok- I am from the boston area and we had under the umbrella tree as well!
ReplyDeleteLOVED that show!
I am canadian!
ReplyDeleteI loved Mr.dressup.
i also loved Mr.rogers, polka dot door & polkaroo when I was a wee thing
I loved eureekas castle, Arthur, the smurfs, and captain planet!!
I loved ghostwriter when I was a bit older.
Don't get me wrong, I was not allowed to watch alot of tv as a kid, but I watched kids TV when I was probably too old to.
