I have a morning ritual.
I sit on the couch as I put on my makeup and watch Good Morning America. Yesterday morning, I was startled when I learned of the pirate attack on the cruise ship. How terrifying! I didn’t even know there were pirates anymore!
I guess I don’t know what I thought – they were fictional…they were “back in the day”….they were only in movies….they were extinct? I’m not sure, but I sure didn’t know that there were still pirates invading the seas. Yikes. Sure makes me think twice about my voyage around the world in a yacht when I hit 50. ;)
Can you imagine me fighting off a pirate? I would probably growl and swing my purse at him.
They showed clips of modern day pirates, and I have to say, I was a bit disappointed by their appearance. I wanted to see long scraggly bears, eye liner on one eye and a patch on the other, big hats with a scull and bones and of course, peg legs.
But that is not what the pirates look like anymore. They have shaved heads and they are very, very tan. Some of them were even wearing masks. They looked more like ninjas than pirates to me. What a let down!
Our mascot in High School was the Pirates. I was a cheerleader for 7 years. Before the games, all the football players would huddle in a circle and chant “One, Two, Three, Pirate Pride – ARRGGGHH”. Yes. They “arghed” like Pirates. How do you spell argh? My best friend and I would stand on the sidelines and do it with them. Our favorite part was the ARRGGHH.
We always made a fist and squinted our eyes. Come to think of it, we looked more like Popeye than a pirate.
Anyway, is it strange that we were the Pirates? We were essentially telling the surrounding communities that we were the “bad guys”. I mean, pirates are mean. And ugly. And scary. And stinky, I bet. And they hijack poor innocent boats. How on earth did my sweet small town inherit “pirates” as our mascot of choice? Hmmm... we were the reprobate town, I tell ya.
This whole post was pointless. But I just wanted the world to know that pirates are real, not fictional, and they’re dangerous and still reeking havoc on the seas. And they don’t look like they’re supposed to.
So...be careful out there.
And for your entertainment and amusement: Me, back in my pirate days.
Check out the bottom of my dirty shoes. Doesn't this scream "classic cheer pic"? What would REALLY have set it off is if I would have put my hand on my chin and tilted my head. HA! ;)

Pirates? I had no idea either!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute cheerleader you made. I was one also...and now I can't stand to listen to them at the games! Seriously, those little girls screaming and jumping kind of drive me batty, lol!!
I know! Pirates! They are back in full force I think.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I remember you and your pirate days--too cute! ;)
Oh, Whitney, what a funny post! I remember you in all your pirate-cuteness! I think you should have challenged all the former cheerleaders to post a picture of themselves in cheerleader glory on their blogs. That would be fun to see.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha LOVE the picture!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought the same thing about pirates...how dissapointing!
Still, there are worse mascots. There's a small town near here whose HS mascot is "The Swede". What the heck is that? Some big blond guy walking around eating fish?
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of bad mascots, a high school a few towns away from ours used to be the Redskins. Then, someone decided that was offensive, so now they are the Silkworms. VERY intimidating. lol
ReplyDeleteWhitney, you gave me a good belly laugh first thing this morning! You are such a humorous writer, and you're quickly becoming one of my favorite comedians! I didn't know pirates still existed either.
ReplyDeleteGreat cheerleading picture :) I will have to pull my old ones out for laughs :) ha!
ReplyDeleteYeah when I heard that story I told Hubs, no cruise for us :) And I am with you, I had no idea they still existed!
i've heard about those pirates a lot lately. weird. great pic from HS!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you I had no idea pirates were real!!
ReplyDeleteYou look sooo cute in that picture girl!
I had no idea there were still pirates either! crazy...this makes me think of a post
ReplyDeleteToo cute! You haven't changed a bit:) We were the Redskins. Talk about controversy! That mascot had to go;) Oh, and I hadn't even heard about the pirates!
ReplyDeleteI've seen this pirate thing splashed across the news lately - what cowards...Anyway, you look cute in your uniform! I was always playing sports, so no time for cheerleading except my senior year, almost tried out...
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that there were modern-day pirates! Thanks for the enlightenment. :) My high school mascot was The "Rebel" which to this day, I really have no idea what it represented. It was a picture of a cartoonish cowboy...go figure. :)
ReplyDeleteWhatever, super cute cheer pic!! I'll have to see if I can find mine--we were the Eagles. I think my parents still have it up in their house--it's one of the few high school era pictures that's decent! Ha.
ReplyDeleteYou look so young! And your hair was so long and gorgeous. See, you need to grow it back out. Then I will be jealous of your long, red locks!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea pirates were still around. That is scary!! Love the pic so cute!
ReplyDeleteI saw that news story and I was astounded! It is disappointing that they don't look like "real" pirates, though. And you looked like a very sweet pirate!
ReplyDeleteyou know there's a new pirate movie coming out soon...it's rated ARRRGGGGGGGGH!
ReplyDeletesorry sorry. oldest joke ever, but i had to do it. love the cheer pic! too cute!
At least pirates are suppose to be scary. Our high school mascot was a rabbit. That will put fear in ya, wont it!
ReplyDeleteOld World ornaments are made of glass, right? Most of mine are, too, and I'm wondering how that will work with little toddler hands in the next few years ... hmmm!! Is it okay to have a "don't touch the tree" rule? That kind of defeats the purpose though!! Maybe we could hang all of the glass ornaments reaaaaaaally high on the tree, out of the reach of little fingers?? :)
ReplyDeleteYou are too funny. I heard about that Pirate story on the Today Show (my ritual). Scary!
ReplyDeleteI cheered too in high school. We were the Cougars, which suited us because the ran rampant through out the country area. We had a real live stuffed one that was incased in the main lobby - kinda scary!!!!
I didn't know that there were still pirates around till I saw that news story, too! Crazy!
ReplyDeleteYou were a cuter-than-a-button pirate. ;0P
Hurray, I am going on my first cruise this Christmas. Hopefully I can bring my cutlass just in case.
ReplyDeletePirates! High School! What a blast. Our biggest rival in hs were the Pirates. We were the Patriots. I think the Pirates had much cuter costumes though and were probably way cooler. Maybe you've got a little cheerleader in the making!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea there were still pirates out there!
ReplyDeleteI have the same picture of Cassie when she was a cheerleader and her shoes were dirty too!!
Hugz,
Michele
We HAVE to be twins.
ReplyDeleteThat is MY morning ritual too... to the T.
I do my makeup while watching Good Morning America... why? Because I LOVE Robin Roberts.
Is it bad that if I have to get to an early morning meeting or am not able to watch GMA.. i DVR it???
lol!
:) you're adorable!
wow...scary! I had heard some stories about them being real.. but I cant believe they attacked a cruise ship! scary!
ReplyDeleteMy husband was a poutea pirate.. in oklahoma... they arrrrr too:) ha
I have been seeing stories about pirates too! I think it's crazy and a little disappointing. I mean, if you're going to be a pirate, at least look the part and maybe even "swashbuckle" a little bit!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know they still existed either until Garth informed me that pirates had stolen a ton of money from a ship last month, yikes! And now cruise ships? Out. of. control.
ReplyDeleteOur mascot was the beaver. There is nothing intimidating or scary about a beaver. I so would have much rather been a pirate. :o)
ReplyDeleteYikes! I thought there were only those Pirate wannabes. You know, those teenage girls with skull notebooks, skull earings, skull hats, skull shirts, skull everything?
ReplyDeleteI better not go out boating on the lake next summer, you never know where the real pirates will show up!
Ok, you are funny! Really funny!
ReplyDelete=0D
I'll definitely be coming back for more reads!
Awww! You were the pirates – and you squinted and held up 1 fist. So cute! We were the foxes so I guess we trotted. Kidding
ReplyDeleteReal pirates are so scary – and evil!
Whitney, can you send me your email address? I have a question to ask you about your Google AdSense. :)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, my high school mascot was a dolphin. I think a pirate would have been much cooler!
Very random post, but, like you said, I had no idea pirates were real anymore! I have a very strange student who will be happy to hear that the pirate culture still exists...like I said, he's weird.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Russell and I just KNEW we were meant to be since my HS mascot was also the pirates...ARRRGH! ;)
Seven years??? Not all of which were in highschool, were they?!?
ReplyDeleteDid they make a come back with Pirates of the Caribbean?
ReplyDeleteI had no idea they were still around!! I love your photo..dirty shoes and all! I am sure that if I looked through my old cheerleading photos i'd find pics like that too. :0)
ReplyDeleteARRGGHH!
ReplyDeleteI was a "pirate" cheerleader too! Our mascot was the pirate and our school name started with a P so we had lots of cheers like, "Pirates are best...the super-est...we've got the strength, we're top - in rank!..." Those were the days:)
ReplyDeleteAye, Matey!
I love checking in on your blog. I don't always comment but I am reading :-) I had no clue pirates still existed either until recently and honestly I was expecting pirates to look more like the pirates on Pirates of the Caribean. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI totally said the SAME thing to my hubby! Who knew there were real life pirates!
