Slinging the Toys.

Toys.

They are everywhere. At all times.

I pick them up.

They sprawl themselves back into every nook and cranny of the house in multiples in a matter of .3 seconds.

They are the bane of my existence.

The other night I was picking them up for the umpteenth time before bed, slinging them into tubs with great fervor and huffing to Husby with great theatrics, "I'll miss these one day! I'll miss these one day!"

He didn't sympathize. He simply laughed.

The Hot Wheels. The Legos. The stuffed animals. The books. The bows & arrows. The swords. The tools. The capes. The masks. The endless variety and supply of balls. The smurfs. The blocks. The guns. The trains. The games. The TOYS!

I'll miss them one day. It doesn't seem possible in the day in and day out moment of this season of life. But I will.

Because as crazy as the toys make me, they also remind me ... of my littles, of their innocence, of the joy that a house with children brings.

Now, someone call and remind me of that tomorrow somewhere around 6pm.

  1. Haha. Derick thinks our kids have too many toys. He's probably right! Thank goodness for our toy room though!

  2. When my son was around two I made him start helping pick up. As he got older I made him take more responsibility in the cleaning up. Now he knows, if he gets it out he's going to put it up. Still get frustrated with all the toys but it helps to have him take ownership in the mess.

  3. I am SOOOO with you! We specifically bought our house with a HUGE playroom upstairs so we could have some true adult living space downstairs. My kids don't seem to think it's a real need and the toys end up everywhere. I started telling them that their playroom can be a disaster but if anything is left downstairs in the evenings it's mine for a week. Helpful...but I feel sorta cruel when I have to follow through!

  4. Levi is DEFINITELY old enough to follow a rule like "you have to put one toy away before you pull out the next one." If you don't teach him to pick up after himself now and reinforce it regularly, you are doing a great disservice to his future wife :). (I say this from experience, as I am married to a wonderful sweet man whose mother did far too much for him and now we are married and he has no clue how to clean or help around the house or take care of things. This is quite a problem now that I am pregnant and really need his help). Also, what do you think of a toy closet similar to the one on Young House Love?http://www.younghouselove.com/2013/09/who-needs-coats-when-you-can-have-toys/

  5. I recommend sorting them and storing them in bins (lego, make believe dress up clothes, cars and trucks, little people, etc). Each day bring out a different bin. They can't have another bin until the last one is cleaned up and put away. AND each time you bring down a new bin, it's fresh and "new" and FUN!!! Good luck! I have 4 kids and even with my bin system, everything is still a mess!! Like you, I'll know I'll look back and miss these days.
