Soothing Sounds.

photo

I saw this picture last week and loved it because I agree with all of them.  Well, maybe not the blades on ice because I get chills just thinking about things scraping on ice.  It probably goes back to when we were little and my brother would go into great detail about two front teeth and a giant ice cube - just trying to give me the willies.  It worked.  And I can not forget that horribly vivid image he painted into my brain.

Thanks, Luke.

Anyway, it got me to thinking about other nice sounds.

I've always loved the "sounds of the home".

Dishwasher running.

Dryer spinning.

Coffee (tea for me!) dripping.

Fans spinning.

Heaters kicking on.

I love all those sounds.  They are soothing and soft and just give me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside!

Well, until the dryer buzzes and my heart leaps out of my chest and I break out into a cold sweat.  Then my warm fuzzies turn into cold dryer lint.  Speaking of dryer lint, do you clean out your lint trap after every load?  I do it after every 2 or 3.  Husby tells me I don't do it enough.  It seems like EVERY SINGLE TIME he goes to empty the dryer (which is probably once every few weeks), I have just washed a load of something furry and the lint trap is puffed out to capacity.  Then he lectures me and I tell him it's never like that.  Only when he checks.

Chasing rabbits.

Just call me Elmer.  Elmer Fudd.

And I know what you're all thinking.  "What kind of furry things is this lady drying?!"

Well, I can assure you that it is not rabbits.  We have furry towels.  You'd think from the amount of lint they produce they would be as thin as paper by now, but somehow, they are not.  The produce even more furr each time I wash them.  It's a sheer and utter mystery of my life.

So! Sounds that I love.  Here are some more of my favorites.

Fire crackling.

Baby coos.

Unison "amen"s.

When you turn funny and your hip does that little "spring" sound.  Anyone know what I'm talking about?  Maybe I have a special hip.

Boy choirs.

Pitter patter of tiny feet.

Pop fizz.

Pen on paper.

Fingernails on a cash register.

Laughter.  Especially from my children.

The turn of the keys in the door when Husby comes home and his soft, handsome voice that soothes my soul saying, "Hi Family! I'm home!"

These are a few of my very favorite sounds in all of the land.  What are some of your favorites?

  1. Please clean your dryer lint EVERYTIME! Dryer fires are a scary thing!

Also cleaning your lint trap everytime will help dry clothes faster, cut down on enegry usage.

  2. I agree with J.....my grandmother taught me a long time ago to ALWAYS clean the lint trap every time you put another load in the dryer. Safety first!

  3. You HAVE to clean out the lint filter!!!! I had a house fire my senior year of college (not because of a dryer...someone left an iron on) and it's made me obsessed with fire safety. Seriously--that one will bite you someday if you don't stay on top of it; not to mention that your dryer isn't going to run as efficiently. I do hate how the lint goes *everywhere*...I keep an empty baby wipes or kleenex container on top of the dryer to make it convenient and keep it all contained.

  4. I agree w/ your Husby, it is important to clean out the lint trap w/ EVERY SINGLE LOAD. If you don't, you run the risk of starting a fire in your home. Did you ever use dryer lint to make fire starters in Girl Scouts? Dryer lint accelerates flames. Just think how quickly a fire could spread if it started from or was exposed to dryer lint. I have known families who have had house fires because they didn't change the lint trap w/ every load. If I run a load of fluffy towels or a blanket that sheds a lot I will even clean out the lint trap half way through the cycle to be safe and to make the dryer more efficient.

  5. I do clean my lint trap after every load too. And I love the sound of long finger nails clicking away on a keyboard or tapping away on the tabletop. I also love the sound of wind, at the beach or in the mountains, very peaceful.

  6. Whitney, don't feel bad about the dryer lint trap. I'm right there with you...every 2 or 3 times. But after reading these comments AND my friend's neighbor's house burning down last month I am now going to clean it every time! I will also never leave the house anymore with the dryer on. Scary! Anyhow, back to your question...I love the sound of rain, my boys splashing in the pool, the garage door going up when my hubby gets home, and the pop-fizz right when you open a soda can.

  7. I agree with everyone else about cleaning the dryer lint trap. It's extremely important to do so after EVERY load. A family in our Missouri church had a fire in their home and it nearly burned to the ground, all because they hadn't cleaned the lint out of their dryer. Yikes!

On to favorite sounds in random order … Jim Brickman and/or Marian playing the piano, the wind chimes on my back porch, the garage door opening (I know Curt is home safe), my grandkids saying my name, birds chirping, a kitten's purr, the tick of a clock, ocean waves lapping on the shore, and my daddy singing.

  8. Funny how everyone's commented so angry about cleaning the lint trap although you talked and asked about soothing sounds :D We don't have a dryer but I'll definitely know I have to clean it now when I get one :D

I loved what you said about husband coming home in the evening. I realised that that's my favourite sound in the whole world: when I hear his footsteps at the front door and key in the lock at 5.30. It's our dog's favourite sound too :)
I also love the sound of our chihuahua snoring.
And hearing my husband's voice on the phone if he's gone for several nights.
And raindrops on the roof at night.
    And fire crackling.
And how, in the spring, you start to hear birds singing again.

Ah, I feel so poetic right now :)

  10. My husband snoring
Birds singing at the start of Spring.
    My fan going
    Furnace kicking on
Time clock on a Friday at 5:00
The silence that comes when snow falls
    Ocean waves
A baby's first cry, is one I hope to experience once in my life:)
