Focus On Your Family.

Last week, Husby, Weebie and I loaded up and headed out of town for a few days. Originally, Husby and I had an anniversary weekend planned, but at the last minute we decided to switch locations and take Weebs along for a family vacation. Call us crazy, but we just love being with our little guy and if we were going to take a trip, we wanted him to get to experience it, too!

There's nothing like getting away from the day to day routine of life with your family. It is so very important to make time for fun and carefree times where you can just relax, laugh and truly enjoy each other's presence without the weight of chores, laundry, work and other responsibilities on your shoulders. I have found that these times bring about a special sense of unity that being at home simply can't. Don't get me wrong, home is a haven - a refuge of peace and stability, but breaking away from the routine for a little bit is a breath of fresh air that sometimes, you didn't even realize you needed.

When we loaded the car and pulled out of the driveway, the three of us were officially in "vacation mode". We cranked up the tunes, told stories, reminisced and laughed....a lot. Even Levi knew that he was on vacation. When we arrived to our destination and checked into our hotel room, he started running, exploring and screaming at the top of his lungs --- totally showing off and making us fall on the bed laughing. The more we laughed, the sillier he acted. He was absolutely bursting with excitement.

Getting away forces family interaction that distractions back home often interfere with. There's no lawn to mow, dinners to cook, correspondence to follow, beds to make or toys to pick up. Those distractions/responsibilities sometimes steal important conversations away from your spouse and prohibit more story time or play time your children. On vacation, you have all the time in the world to focus on each other and reconnect....as husband and wife...as mother and son...as father and son...as a family.

Some of the sweetest, best memories of my life stem from family vacations growing up, and I truly believe they are vital in a family unit. Whether you take a few days to go to the lake or you plan a lavish trip with the works, it doesn't matter. The point is escaping life's demands, experiencing new things, seeing new sights and enjoying the adventure of not knowing what the next hour will bring or what memories you are going to create that will turn into family stories that get passed down through generations.

Every time we take a trip together, big or small, I get terribly sad when we start heading home. The time away is never long enough and the moments slip away entirely too fast. I love being with my family more than anything in the world and when we get back home, it's inevitable that life will pick back up, routine will settle in and distractions will throw themselves back at us. Regardless of knowing that, though, I always come home with a great sense of refreshment....ready to tackle what's ahead of me and do things bigger and better than I did before we left.

Family is the most precious gift of all. Try to take time to jump out of the day to day and go on a little adventure. You need it, your spouse needs it, and your children need it. You will all come back knowing each other just a little bit better and loving each other just a little bit more.

  4. You know, we haven't had a family vacation with just us since Chris and I were married FIVE YEARS AGO! Might be time to take one because you are absolutely right - they are so important!

(And we would totally have caved and brought Bean with us, too!)

  7. I just took a week vacation in June. Before that I hadn't been on a vacay in 6 years. I'm making it a priority now...it's so refreshing.

  8. I feel the same way about trips that you do. Our son, who will be 3 in October, goes everywhere with us. He's only spent one night away from us since he was born. I have friends that take big vacations and leave their kids at home for a week at a time and I always think, "they have no idea what they are missing". Family vacations are the best memory making times. I figure my husband and I had 4 and a half years before my son was born to do what we wanted, and he is growing up quickly. Before we know it he'll be off to camps, sleepovers, lock-ins, etc. I want to enjoy this family time while we can. Having said that we do go out on date nights every so often just the two of us :)

  14. Glad you guys had so much fun. Sounds and looks like a BLAST! When D was growing up we didn't have $ for such trips, or time in the summer. A youth pastor's kids only get to go see grandma/grandpa for "fun" whenever there is time. I'm so glad you all will be fortunate enough to enjoy trips like that with Levi (& those to come). :)
