When I was in Middle School, a teacher once told me that every time you run out of deodorant to switch brands when buying a new one. Apparently your body becomes used to the formula over time and stops fighting against it, resulting in sweaty pits. Yikes!
I have never found any scientific evidence to prove this little myth, but it scared me into buying a new brand every time. I tend to believe everything people tell me. Gullible? You could say that. But I don't know why anyone would lie about hygiene, so I abide by this little rule.
Well, I take that back. I used to abide by the little rule - until about 3 months ago. As you know, my Mom is always searching for fun new toiletry products for us when we come visit. She unknowingly ran into a little gem of a find that has forever changed the life of my armpits.
I hate the word armpits.
Introducing, Donna Karan Cashmere Mist.

This deodorant is hands down the best I have ever used. It keeps you unbelievably dry. So dry, in fact, it's hard to get my armpits wet in the shower! Not only does it keep you pit-stain free (yet another word I hate), it smells amazing. I have worn it without wearing perfume and Husby has commented on how good I smell.
Don't worry, I didn't tell him it was my ARMPITS. I thought that might kill the moment.
Now, let me warn you that for deodorant it is a bit pricey at $17. But it's worth every cent. It's so smooth and soft. It's a powdery roll on texture that goes on clear. Oh, it's amazing. You'll go around raising your arms and sniffing just for fun!
I'm pretty sure Levi loves it, too. He disappeared for a bit last night and then walked back into the Living Room toddling around with my deodorant in his hand. He had somehow lifted the lid off and he had the lid in one hand and the product in the other. He was millimeters away from sticking it in his mouth and when we grabbed it away from him, he died a thousand deaths and bursted into tears. He's serious about his Mommy's deodorant.
And so am I. I recently ran out of it and went against my old teachers advice and bought it again. I just couldn't bring myself to wear anything else after my pits had been spoiled by such luxury!
I am so happy to have found this deodorant.
Now, I have a couple questions for you concerning your deodorizing habits.
1.) Do you use spray? Roll on? Gell? Powder?
2.) When applying, do you switch hands or put it on with one hand?
I like a roll on powdery texture...but not the kind that leaves white clumps. Nasty.
I apply with one hand and it makes Husby laugh so much. When we first got married and he witnessed me doing it for the first time, he was in complete awe. He had never seen anyone contort their arm in a manner as I did, applying it on the same arm as I was holding it with. I have never even contemplated switching hands. I'm a one hander - and I wonder if anyone else out there does the same?!
I can even one hand it with spray. If you look up "talented" in the dictionary, my name pops up. Along with a picture of me deodorizing my armpits.

I am going to have to try using one hand tomorrow to put on my deodorant. I just don't see how it's possible ha
ReplyDeleteHahaha, I'm with Emily... totally trying that tomorrow just to see if it is possible! :-)
ReplyDeleteI only use one hand! I didn't realise I was special until I read this post. Thanks Whitney!
ReplyDeleteOne handed for sure! Who has time to switch hands?!?
ReplyDeleteThat one-handed thing IS impressive.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm pretty sure your teacher lied. The same active ingredient is used in all anti-perspirants - Aluminum. It can come in different forms (cholorohydrate, zirconium tetrachlorohydrate - basically depending on what type of deodorant you're using.)
So, my point is this: they all have aluminum in them, so your body isn't getting "used" to the ingredients in one, and then switching "reawakens" the mechanism of action ... it's all the same stuff. So, you can use your Dona Karen deo to your heart's content with no worries :)
I use this, too...AND b/c my mother bought it for me! I agree totally with your endorsement (in fact, when I saw your title I said to myself, This is going to be about Cashmere Mist!) and add that it lasts FOREVER! Totally worth the money!
ReplyDeleteI have to use roll-on. I get the most awful rash if I use any kind of spray on.
ReplyDeleteI love my Dove brand roll-ons. Creamy :) Even if they do take a bit of time to dry!
17 bucks?!?! Ah! That is probably as much as I spend in a year to deodorize and antiperspire myself! But I do appreciate a nice scent. I usually smell all of them in the aisle at Walgreens. I really like Dove's Pure Cashmere.
ReplyDeleteMaybe your teacher meant that you get used to the smell after awhile and don't notice your freshness??
I switch hands and I use solids (sometimes dove, sometimes degree). I had the same advice given to me about shampoo and conditioner, that you should switch brands because your hair gets used to it, that always stuck with me too, lol.
ReplyDeleteYou are hilarious. My dad uses different deodorant for every day of the week because he says he stinks if he doesn't. Um...I may or may not do that same =)
ReplyDeleteI have the same one! My mom is obsessed and gave it to me as a gift one year. It's pretty amazing.
ReplyDeleteSo when I get out of the shower this morning I am trying the one hand application! I can't imagine being accuate...I'll let you know how it goes!
ReplyDeleteI switched to the over the counter clinical brands about 1 year ago. Last summer I found that I was...let's say...not so pretty smelling. Yikes...must be some sort of change in my system. It was the first time I ever had a problem and I was so upset! I have used the clinical brands (different ones depending on what's on sale) and my problem is solved. They work wonderful and smell great even through a really long workout! =]

This post made me laugh out loud! I'm glad to hear that someone else (your teacher) has found that they need to switch brands! Maybe not every time you buy it but I have definitely noticed that one won't work as well after a while...if you know what I'm saying.
ReplyDeleteI might have to suck it up and try the $17 dollar stuff if it is as great as you say! Thanks for the tip and funny post. :)
It seems so unlike you, Whitney, to say the word "armpit." Icky. I don't like that word either. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI can do the one handed or two handed application, depending on my mood I guess.
BTW - You remembered to post another chapter of your story! Way to go. I love it!
I use roll-on deodorant, but I hate the gels. It can get all goopy and make your shirt stick to your underarms. yuck.
ReplyDeleteThat deodorant sounds amazing. I would LOVE something that I don't have to reapply two or three times in a 24 hour shift on the ambulance (and I don't even sweat that bad!). Hopefully my grocery store carries it so I can try it :)
Cabin Fever in Vermont
I use the Secret Clinical Strength Waterproof gel... it works fabulously, even after a year of using the same brand! And I'm a one hander! :)
ReplyDeleteVery very impressed at your one-handed talent! Worst deodorant story ever - when I was in middle school, my mom got onto this healthy, no chemical kick and ordered deodorant rocks for us to use. Yep - it's exactly like it sounds - a rock that you have to get wet and rub under your arms. I was extremely happy to go back to the chemical-laden, effective stuff after that! :)
ReplyDeleteI am not talented enough to do the one handed application!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I am weird and have to put on the same number of strokes under each arm - and it has to be even!
I'm off to buy some of this deodorant and to see how awesome it is!
Oh man. I was so content in life. And now. Now I want that deoderant so bad. Maybe if I just stop wearing mine until my husband caves and lets me buy the donna karen.
ReplyDeleteOne handed? Wow - I didn't realize people could do that. I guess your hand does reach, it would just be uncomfortable. Ha. I use both hands!
ReplyDeleteI have two different deodorants that I use. I use the crystal every morning, and then I keep a regular one in my purse for reapplication on really hot days. Neither of them are anti-persperent. But you know me, I'm leery of the aluminum and parabens that have been found in breast cancer tissue. With lymph nodes being right where I apply that stuff, I use only natural deodorants. It's been a little bit of an adjustment, but I like it. (-:

I really want to try that kind! Where can you get it (CVS, Walgreens)? I usually buy Dove Clinical because I think it works great and I never have to worry about any issues that may arise, but I'm always up for new brands! $17 doesn't seem too bad when I pay $12 for the other kind.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Secret Clinical strength is also great! And it does the same thing you mentioned, it's actually hard to get pits wet in the shower (though soap fixes that).
ReplyDeletebahaha i use one hand too! I use Secret Ooh La La Lavender the Clear Gel one. It smells amazing.. I've used it since it came out :)
ReplyDelete"He died a thousand deaths." I love that and I know exactly the cry you are talking about! Take anything away from Bean and it's like the greatest tragedy in his life! Cracks me up!
ReplyDeleteWow, $17 seems pretty pricey but your practically have me sold. Maybe Ms. Karen herself should hire you to solely sell her deodorant. You've really got me wanting to try it out! Especially if it smells so good!
ReplyDeleteha!! this post is hilarious. i dare anyone to say they can't blog because they have nothing to talk about!
ReplyDeletei use secret..boring i know. i am really wanting to try this kind now though! hmm..wonder if they sell it on ebay!
i am ambidexterous. :)
This strikes me as funny because I bought into this theory too. Although I thought it was Coach C's Chemistry class that I heard from. I switch it up on my deodrants and shampoos because of these words of wisdom. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI use Dove and I have applied my deodorant with one hand before when I'm in a hurry but I usually switch hands.
ReplyDeleteLoved this post
I guess I've never done the one-handed app...I use both hands! Does anyone know where you can buy the DK brand Whitney is talking about? $17 is a lot of money for deodorant, but I would try it!
ReplyDeletehaha you are funny. i have never heard of anyone applying deodorant with only one hand!
ReplyDeleteI figure since its the bacteria that cause the smell ... the reason why deodorant stops working is because it gets covered in stinky bacteria that you then reput back under your arms over and over again. I came up with the theory in college ... but once I started only using deodorant when I had clean underarms ... I stopped sweating. If I ever reapply, I always wash first. I have no idea if it is true or not ... but it makes sense and it works!
ReplyDeleteThis is hilarious because my fiance' and I are currently in the midst of a minor deodorant problem ourselves. We live in the Middle East and sometimes certian products are hard to find; for him its deodorant. All they have here for men is spray or the ball roll kind. He hates both! He ran out of his Old Spice High Endurance last month and has resorted to some spray stuff that reeks like a skeezy used car salesman! Anyway, I am going to visit my family in the US tomorrow for a week and he requested that I pick up 6 sticks of the Old Spice! I think I might just have to sneak 1 stick of the Dona Karen in there now too. The people in customs are going to have an interesting time going through my suitcase!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Jane, I never put deodorant on unless I'm straight out of the shower! Don't want the sweaties going back on to my deodorant roller ball, ick! I switch hands by the way..;) and use Mum, a British brand. So effective and cheap, less than $2. I get the unscented so it doesn't clash with perfume. BUT NOW... I want the DK!!! :))
ReplyDeleteI don't change hands either!!!!! and I'd never thought about it before you mentioned it....
ReplyDeleteI've heard of switching up your shampoo and conditioner each time you run out, but not deoderant. I'm gonna have to try this stuff next time just to switch it up and because it sounds AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this review, I bought some of this at Sephora. So far, it's great! :) Also, the girl kept reminding me they will take it back if you're not happy...so give it a try!
ReplyDeleteI read this post a few days ago, but I had a dream last night that I went to buy this deodorant and it was $700! And I still bought it! Ha!
