It's Just a Little Crush

There's something about your first crush that you just never can forget. When I see photos of mine, I always laugh thinking back of the days that I gushed about him to my best friends and bought every magazine that had his face plastered on the front. I dreamed about what it would be like to ever meet him. Never in my life had I seen the perfection on any face that I saw in Jonathan Taylor Thomas.

He was the "be all end all" in my little world. I lived for Tuesday nights so that I could watch him on Home Improvement. He was the mouthy smart alec son who always had something witty to say. I took it a little overboard in laughing at him and his antics; I'm sure my family thought I was losing it.

I vividly remember him being the first boy I ever thought was "cute". My best friend loved him as well, so when we got together, it was "all JTT all the time". He was pretty hot stuff in teeny bopper land and though billions of other little girls loved him as well, I was pretty determined that I loved him most. He was just so ca-yute!

I saw him recently on something and although he is still very cute, he just doesn't have the same effect that he once did. He's short, he has a high voice and his accent that I once adored is now somewhat irritating. Apparently he is brilliant and graduated from an Ivy League school so I am happy to see that he hasn't followed suit with so many other child actors and is killing himself with drugs and alcohol. Way to go, me, for choosing a good first crush!

But anyway, when I saw him the other day I saw an crazy resemblance to Husby! I gasped, "Husby! You kind of look like Jonathan Taylor Thomas!!" He was on the other couch working on a presentation and mumbled "no, I don't......WOAH! I kinda do!" after I flashed a picture his way.

It was crazy. I don't know if you'll be able to tell from these pictures, but something about him really reminds me of him and I never noticed it until now.

I told Husby, "he was my first crush, ya know."

And he responded with, "Yup....and I'm your last."

I guess I knew what I wanted even as a little girl, huh? Dark skin, blue eyes, super smart and h-a-n-d-s-o-m-e! (Sorry, JTT. Husby's got you on the height.)

So, who was it for you? JTT, Tom Cruise, Butch Cassidy, Greg Brady.....who was your first crush?

  3. I'm more than a decade older than you (37) so you may have no idea who I'm talking about, but I was a smitten kitten over Ricky Schroeder on "Silver Spoons." And the train that wound through the house on that show was pretty darn cool, too!

    Love your blog, Whitney!

  8. I have to agree with another one of your readers: Lee Majors from Big Valley. Others may know him better as The Bionic Man. Oh, what a dreamy guy he was when he was playing Heath. I watched that show religiously just to watch him. I would watch it today. He was my first crush. But, my everlasting crush was Paul Newman, hands down the most handsome man God ever created. Wow.

  22. Oh my. Jordan Knight from New Kids on the Block.

And...JTT was from my home town, so we always felt a special affinity. Not that I ever even saw him, and he'd moved before Home Improvement came on.

  23. Totally JTT as well..... Sigh... My sis and I saw him on some Lifetime channel Christmas movie over the holidays. It brought back all the teenage memories!

  25. I. LOVED. Jonathan Brandis. Loved him. He was my first crush. I was sad to hear that he died years ago.

BUT, I also really loved the guy who played young "Benny Rodriquez" in The Sandlot. I grew up and married a latino who loves baseball ;)

  26. Oh my! I CAN really REALLY see a resemblance!! How funny! I liked Greg Brady when I was little, but he was never an OFFICIAL first crush!! hehe he

    ReplyDelete
  27. Robert Wagner was my first celeb crush...he was 50, I was 10...it would have never worked out...but I had special permission to stay up late on Tuesdays to watch Hart to Hart :). Now I'm 40 and I watch it on dvd--and I still crush, just a little.

  30. He does look like JTT!! And, I totally had a crush on him, too. Even had a picture of him in my middle school locker... (sigh)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wow, that is crazy, I definitely see the resemblence. Mine was definitely Prince Eric from "The Little Mermaid"... Hahahah, not even a real person!! Awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh my! He really does look like him! My first crush was Leonardo Dicaprio in Romeo and Juliet. Oh and then when Titanic came out I was even crazier about him. I even made my mom buy me one of those fake "heart of the ocean necklace" from an infomertial! I still have it. hahaha.

  33. D totally looks like JTT! JTT was definitely one of my faves, along with Matt Lawrence and Devon Sawa (from Now and Then) oh and Rocky off that ninja movie. I can't believe I can't think of the name. You know the one with the three brothers and their g-pa trains them to be ninjas. Perhaps, the name is Three Little Ninjas. Ah, to be in middle school again.

  34. Well, Whit...I'm glad you found Darin because it never would have worked with JTT...pretty sure he came out of the closet a few years ago! Right there with Doogie Howser. Sad day...

    ReplyDelete
  35. ahhh, I too had a thing for JTT. I'm pretty sure most of my friends did too. And I totally see a bit of resemblance between JTT and your husband :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Fred Savage from the Wonder Years :) I really miss that show.

    ReplyDelete
  37. From the time I met D in college I ALWAYS thought he looked like JTT, so when I saw this post I totally cracked up!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Kirk Cameron!

I took one look at that recent JTT picture - before even reading that you saw a similarity and said to myself, JTT looks like her husband! So funny!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Mine was Patrick Swayze. Don't ask me why I was watching Dirty Dancing at my young age (well, I did have 3 older sibs, so maybe they were watching it and let me?), but anyhow, yep, I was about 6 and telling anyone who would listen that I was going to marry him.
I think your hubs resembles JTT in the smile. The eyes are obvious as well, but the second pic of JTT really looks like him in the lower half of his face.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Zac Morris (Mark-Paul Gossalar) from Saved by the Bell... tall and blonde..

and my fiance is short and brunnette... but I love it :)

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  43. Whoa! That is funny cause I didn't know where you were going with this post and on the second picture I was thinking how he kind of looked like your husband!

I didn't have too many celebrity crushes, but I had a thing for a little bit on Tobymac from the Free At Last days. I used to look at the cd booklet that my sister had while I was listening---ahhh!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I really see the resemblance between the two. I still remember when everyone loved JTT. I was not one of them. There was only enough room on my walls for one man at the time... Nick Carter.

    ReplyDelete
  45. ahaha your post made me smile. I remember my pen pal and I making fun of JTT because so many girls liked him. I think we secretly had a crush on him but were to embarrassed to admit it so we tried to make fun of him. Every letter for months always ended with what other words his initials could stand for. Things like "Just Toilet Trained" or "Juicy Tender Tidbit". As you can see we got a little desperate coming up with ideas...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Haha, yeah, Jonathan Taylor Thomas was definitely a cutie. :D

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hmm... my first celebrity crush (i had several!) was probably Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) .. he has a good 25 years or so on me, but I still think he is beautiful! I like my men a little tougher and more rugged though. I also had a super crush on Zac Hanson and Aaron Carter.. both a little bit closer to my age! Home Improvement wise - i was a Zachary Ty Bryan girl!

    ReplyDelete
  48. OK...so I am way, way older than you...my first crush was Sean Cassidy!! You probably don't know who he is. I had a door sized poster hanging on the back of my bedroom door that I looked at everyday! Too funny!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. OMG I LOVED JTT too! I couldn't get enough of him! I liked Zac Hanson too but shh don't tell anyone! lol.

    ReplyDelete
  50. OMG.. what girl DIDN't have a crush on JTT?? I used to collect his pictures from those Teen Beat magazines and put them on my bedroom wall.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I had two: Jonathan Brandis and Kirk Cameron. Two very different ends of the spectrum! Kirk Cameron is a devout Christian, husband, and father and has made a great life for himself. Unfortunately Jonathan Brandis got caught up in the whole "actors on drugs and alcohol" thing and committed suicide. So sad... :(

    ReplyDelete
  52. I was in love with JTT too! I even bought some of the magazines he was on--like Boop (or was it Bopp?)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I had a crush on him, too!! I think i had almost every Tiger Beat and 17 poster plastered up on my walls when I was 13!!! The resemblance to your husband is crazy!

    ReplyDelete
