The Quest For Coupons

A few weeks ago I was watching one of those shows, (ya know, Dateline, Nightline, Prime Time Live - one of those) and they were talking about women who use coupons. Now before you hit the snooze button and click on to the next blog, let me just tell you what I saw.

A woman. With coupons. Grocery Total Before Coupons - $289.93. Grocery Total After Coupons - $23.18.

WHAT?!?!?!?!?

HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE??

And that is when my Quest For Coupons began. I bought the Sunday paper and started clipping.

Weebie even helped.

cmas_0296

cmas_0295

I went to Target and bought a cute little coupon file to keep in my purse. I couldn't have been more excited. But I have admit that I think I was equally excited (if not more) about the coupon file as I was the actual coupons.

(I'm a sucker for office supplies. The post it's, the pens, the cases, the file folders, the erasers, the pencils, the notebooks, the clips, the binders - OH! It makes me squeal in delight to peruse those aisles.)

Last week was my first shopping trip since my Quest For Coupons and take a wild guess at how much I saved at the local market?

Zero Dollars. Zip-oh-lah. Zilch. Nada.

I forgot my coupons at home.

Drat.

Actually, I spent around $6 more than if my Quest for Coupons never existed. Ya know, $2 for the newspaper to clip the coupons from and $4 for my cute file.

Oops. I don't think I'm doing this right.

I am determined to become like the woman who saved $266.75. Who knows, I may even be the woman who saved $266.76.

Any Coupon Queens out there? Any tips for a measly little beginner like me? What's the most you've ever saved?

  1. I love coupons but the most i've ever saved was $19! Over $200 is amzing. I love using coupon.com, see if any of your friends or family have some they don't use. I always got leftovers from friends who weren't going to use them.

  2. haha!!!Ive always wanted to be one of those coupon saving mommas! I always forget mine too. I will try harder :)

  3. SOoo funny that you just did a post on couponing. I SOOO almost posted one on mine too. I am trying to figure out the whole process. The most Ive saved in $5. However, I think the trick is going to the stores that like double or triple your coupons. I dunno...I will let you know when I figure it out. :)

  4. I have just started coupon cutting so I will let you know if I find anything good!!

  5. I think I saved about $25 at my last big trip to Wal-Mart a few weeks ago. And I always buy my Sunday paper at Walgreens because they are only $1 instead of $2 so there is a dollar savings there. And you definitely need to go to 918couponqueen.com and follow her on FB b/c that will save you a lot of time of having to find the deals yourself. I also do a few price matches at Wal-Mart each time with sale ads from other stores that way you don't have to go all over town just to hit the sales. Just shopping the sales flyers will help a lot too.

  6. I can't even tell you how many times I've clipped the coupons, packed them in my purse and then gone through the check out and paid and forgot to hand the cashier my coupons. Then when I'm walking to my car I realize oops, I forgot to hand her my coupons, ha, ha.

  7. You have to combine the coupons with the sales. THAT is the secret.

Also, she may have saved that much, but they never tell you what they buy. They usually buy a bunch of processed junk and things they wouldn't normally buy because they have a coupon. So like, you wouldn't normally buy a bunch of Tostitos or Mac n Cheese, but you have a coupon for 25 cents off each AND they're on sale for a buck cheaper than normal AND your store does double coupons, so you "saved" $3.00 on those two items, but you SPENT $4 you wouldn't have spent otherwise. Also, now you have junk in the house that your family is going to eat instead of the healthy stuff you would have bought otherwise.

I'm a couponer, but I'm careful to not fall into the trap of buying stuff just because I have a coupon, and I combine it with meal planning and seeing what's on sale in the store circulars. I usually save between 30 to 40 percent on my grocery bill in that way.

Be sure to check out printable coupons online too - coupons.com and smartsource.com are good ones, as well as the manufacturer sites.

  10. I will coupons for the things that I will actually use. I read another blog and her and her momma tend to save tons of money. She will list the best deals with the amount of her saving. Here is a link to her blog: http://courtneyscontemplations.blogspot.com/2010/02/over-71-in-grocery-savings.html
If you did through it she also did a post awhile ago on how she shopped with her coupons.

Btw I am new to your blog and just love it! Your little guy is the cutest!

  13. So i clip coupons. I take them to the store.. and then I compare.."I can save $1 on this name brand item with my coupon, or save $4 on the already cheaper generic brand" I go with generic. Coupons are great if you get some on stuff you buy all the time, and will only buy that one brand. Last sunday I grabed a newspaper, and it had NO coupons in it at all! =(
That happens a lot. I found a coupon organizer at the dollar tree that was cute! I havent used it yet.

  14. Your blog looks fantastic! The one thing I hate about google reader is unless I leave a comment, I can't see the blogs! Your header is adorable!

Anyway, like you, I've tried the whole coupon thing and I just don't see how I'll ever get $200+ for $25! My local supermarket does not allow more than one coupon per item and that was what the woman on the show did to make her bill so low. But I still clip and I save about $10-20 on each trip. Plus I have also learned how important it to check out Target's sales & places like CVS & Walgreens. They have great perks.

Do me a favor and visit my blog www.lifeasaceo.com not sure if you follow me or not but if you do, LOTS of my readers lost my feed when I switched to WP this weekend--bummer! I need my readers to resubscribe and/or re-add themselves to GFC. THANKS!!

  16. I don't know how it will work in your area, but my friends and I use southernsavers.com. Also, I agree with one of the other girls about being careful what you buy. We don't eat a lot of food out of a box, so we don't save so much in the pantry. But it helps a TON when it comes to cleaning and household supplies, toilet paper, make-up, and toiletries. Hope that helps!

Okay, this has nothing to do with this post, but as I was reading other blogs I follow, I read a post from Restyled Home, I don't know if you already follow her (I can't remember how I found her), but her latest post was about Seinfeld. And since you've mentioned what fans you are of the show, you might get a kick out of her post. Hope you stop by and check her out!

  19. I'm a huge couponer! I've learned from a few fabulous web sites. Check out thebargainbuggy.blogspot.com and dealseekingmom.com. They post all the best deals! Good luck!

  20. Go to Money Saving Mom Dot Com. She has tons of great ideas and is one of those that can buy like $100 of stuff for $10. But, you have to buy stuff at Walgreens and other stores to get the big savings. With a kiddo, it's a little hard to make it to all of the stores. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  21. first of all, we are soul sisters. The office supply this is totally me too!!! :D Second, my friend Kristen from OBU does the Grocery Game. I guess you do it online, and pay like $20 a year, but it gives you info on local grocery store specials, matched with coupons in the mail that week. You have to change your mindset for how you shop, though. You buy what's on sale, and stock your pantry like it's the store shelf, and then you have what you need at home when you need it, instead of going to the store. I haven't tried it yet, it seems pretty hard core, but she swears by it, and has saved TONS of money!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I LOVEEEEE me some office supplies!!!!! I do clip coupons, but I tend to buy a little extra (like some pens, or a planner) when I know I'm going to save, because, you know, I'm saving. So I can splurge a little. So it never actually works for me. My aunt, however, trades coupons over the internet somehow, mails me coupons...she also has a house full of stuff to show for these savings...maybe she's a hoarder....a coupon-clipping hoarder. But anyways, it can be done! Hope you get it figured out!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Whitney---sign up for the Grocery game! You pick the stores you use, and each week it gives you a list of what's on sale and matches it with a coupon you get from your Sunday paper. They even color code the items. Green means that with the sale and coupon it's FREE, blue means it's at a rock bottom price, and black means it's pretty god--but only get it if you really need the item. I've been doing this for a year and a half and have saved a lot of money!
So go sign up for the www.grocerygame.com --you get a 12 week free trial--and say Sarah Hash (spogoh@gmail.com) sent you :) After the free trial it's $5/month.

  24. Try this site called babycheapskate.com - its got great advice! Also, there is a website that is called STLmommy.com , and that is one way I learned to use coupons!!

  25. I don't know if you have a Publix in your town, but couponers LOVE Publix because they have such a great coupon policy. They take competitor coupons (Winn-Dixie, Target, etc.), store coupons, and manufacturer coupons. The trick to couponing is to get the BOGO (Buy One Get One) items, because you can use a coupon on both items, even the one you're getting free! Check out iheartpublix.com - this woman takes the weekly ads and matches them up with coupons. I actually use printable coupons from the internet more than the ones from the Sunday paper. I think the best thing I've done so far with couponing is getting 20 boxes of Green Giant frozen vegetables for $3.15! It takes a little work but it is so worth it in my opinion!

    ReplyDelete
  26. The trick is keeping track of the coupons and stacking them with sales and other coupons. My favorite money saving blog is http://couponcravings.com She posts the weekly deals and how to combine offers, she also posts links to freebies and sales!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've done the coupon thing for about a year and a half now. Our stores don't double and triple coupons - which I'm betting was the case for the woman who only paid $23 for groceries.

But here's a few tips for your new coupon clipping adventures:

1)When you make a list for the grocery store, make a coupon list in a different column. Be specific about quantity and size so you don't have to rifle through your coupons to find out those details.

2)Plan your meals around them. Break them into categories and then put coupons together that could possibly make up a meal. I use my coupons to help me plan menus for the month.

3)And don't forget to pay attention to the expiration dates! (o:

I save about $60 a month using coupons at the store. That's $720 a year! There is definitely value in taking the time to use them.

    Happy couponing!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Whitney Dawn- One thing I've learned with coupons, is lots of times stores will take them even if it has expired! Always try!!!

Other than that I am a newbie at this. I've learned that CVS has alot of good deals. I use coupons.com which several people have mentioned. It is always best to pair your coupon with something on sale.

Thats all I got friend! Love ya!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Agh! So much information. My eyes are crossed.

Keep us updated on your progress, I don't save much using coupons, I save more on big sales and make my meal plan based on what's for sale.

Then, I get basic cheap sides - like rice and beans - they go a LONG way if you buy the kind you have to make yourself and then season, etc.

Lots of good advice out there though!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have tried the whole coupon clipping thing, but I have been an absolute failure. One problem I have found is I have no extra storage place to stockpile items. Our house and kitchen just does not lend itself to that.
But, if you find some good advice that works for you, I think you should do a post to share the tidbits you get that are really helpful.
Good luck! I hope it works out for you.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Check out http://thecouponclippers.com/

They have coupons from all over the country, so there is much more variety in what you can find coupons for. You pay a very small handling fee for them to clip the coupons and mail them to you. So, what I do is go through my local stores ads, and match up what is on sale with what I can find coupons for. Even better if your store doubles coupons! Then, just don't forget them!! I did this a few years back, pretty consistently, and I saved a ton of money. Once I had $150 worth of baby supplies (wipes, baby wash, lotion, etc) for a friend of mine, and I got it all for $2!!! Crazy right??

    ReplyDelete
  32. I have gotten some good deals. =) I think I saved around $50 on a $140 bill...
Here are a few good sites that link up sales and coupons:
    www.frugallivingandhavingfun.com
    www.fistfulofcoupons.com
    www.couponcravins.com

good luck! I hate it when I leave my coupons at home! My tip is to use the sale ads, and your coupons and make a list before you go!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love coupons. I started using them about 4 months ago and I've managed to slash my grocery bill in half every week.

Organization is the key. Know the sales and which stores in your area will double coupons. The Internet is a great tool to help. Southernsavers.com is a great savings place. She'll teach you a lot. Good luck. It's seriously one of the most addictive things I've done in a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. check out myblessedlife.net. she's a coupon user and posts frequently about it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The most I've ever saved was about $80 (getting $90 worth of kids toys and DVDs for $12 at Target).

The coupon file is a great idea. I keep envelopes with coupons divided up by theme (Restaurants, Target, Whole Foods, Grocery Store, General Coupons, Mall).

I depend on coupon blogs to tell me where to look and what's the best deals. Then I print the coupons and put them in the right envelopes. I keep them in my diaper bag all the time so that if I'm out someplace I have a coupon for, I'll have it.

I also mark on my grocery list if I have a coupon for an item so that I don't forget to use it.

Some good sites are: Deal Seeking Mom, Freebies 4 Mom, Money Saving Mom, Nicole's Nickles, & Swagrabber.

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I just did a post on my blog about couponing. I'm going to be posting some tips each Sunday. Check there if you're interested. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I've tried it a few times, but I always forget my coupons or end up overwhelmed.
The trick, besides remembering your coupons, is to use them only when the item the coupon is for is on sale. And also to know which stores double coupons.
Like if your Target has a grocery section, you can print coupons off the Target webpage, and combine the Target coupons with the coupons with the newspaper. So say there's a Target huggies coupon for $1.50 off a pack of huggies, and you get the huggies coupons in the mail for $3.00 off a pack of huggies. And a grocery store or Rite Aid or someone in the area advertises huggies at $6.99 a package. You take the ad and your two coupons to Target, get your bag of huggies and you get 34 huggies diapers for less than $3.
That was the only time I successfully couponed. I was so proud of myself.
Good luck in yoru couponing quest!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I rarely remember to use coupons (coo-pons or q-pons?, haha)
my phone has an app that scans the barcode and searches for the best price. Except I don't think I've ever used it in store, I never remember!

    ReplyDelete
  39. The most I've ever saved is around $25. It takes a TON of work. Especially trying to compare sales papers and double manufacturing coupons with store coupons. Sheesh. It just wears me out thinking about it. I've slacked off over time. But I need to get back on it!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I love office supplies too!

I cut out coupons each week and try to remember to use them-I think the most I've ever saved was around $7.

I do think the key is to only cut coupons for the things you know you would buy without the coupon or for something you really, really want to try. I used to buy things that I didn't really need-for example there are always TONS of frozen pizza coupons that are a great deal-but who needs that much frozen pizza?!?!

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Um not mentioning any names here but, I actually scoured the paper AND web for coupons and yes I too nearly spent more than usually had I not looked for coupons in the first place, nice gig if you can get it though ;)

    ReplyDelete
  42. It is a game.

    1. you must keep all your coupons till they expire, even the ones you don't use.

    2. you must match you coupons each week to the grocery sale adds.

    3. As you stock your shelves you adjust to meal planning to the sale items you have bought. ie. Pot Roast, Ground Beef Ect.

    4. Have fun. I love it. And have saved up to $80.00 on a $200.00 grocery bill.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think the main thing that helps people alot is that they buy like 10 newspapers just for the coupons. The lady that saved 200 dollars prob had a whole bunch of the same coupons and she prob stacked up on some items.

    ReplyDelete
  44. You know I love coupons, lol. The most I have saved is a little over $100. I am still pretty new to it but a couple of guidelines I follow are...

Obviously matching your coupons with a sale, don't just buy it because you have a coupon, shop the ads, see who has the better price and if you need it or use it buy it. Now if I have a coupon that is high value and going to make something a very decent price that I don't normally buy or use then yes I will spend the money on that as free and cheap things you get with coupons are so great for donating.

We always shopped at Walmart and now I almost never shop there, I find better deals with my coupons at Kroger, at kroger they double .50 coupons everyday, and plus I can load digital coupons to my plus card and those can be used on top of my paper coupons. There are still deals to be had at walmart, it's just all about matching with a sale. Also at Kroger I get coupons that print out after my receipt, they mail coupons and it usually includes coupons for free products that I buy a lot.

I get most of my shampoos, cleaning products, etc. at the drugstores like CVS, and Walgreens. Coupons matched with the ads there plus the register rewards, and extra care bucks you receive on some sale items make it so cheap or almost free usually.

I print my coupons but another way that is awesome to gain coupons is emailing companies, if you love a product of theirs tell them and they almost always send out coupons. Here is a post I wrote on different programs I use for getting coupons http://thealiceas4.blogspot.com/2010/02/awesome-programs-for-saving-money-and.html

Also the blog that started all my couponing is www.Myfrugaladventures.com, she is awesome! She posts the ad matchups every week, she posts a ton of times a day about deals, if there is a coupon available she knows and posts it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Like V said, we just had a lady come Sunday night to WF that told us how to save $ at the store. I saved my handout and will share it with you. She said that stores will let u use a manufacturer's coupon plus a store coupon on the same item. Then, if it's on sale, you save even more. Sometimes even BOGO free items cancel each other out if you have coupons and you get both free. I'll just have to show you the paperwork with the web addresses and such so it will make more sense.

    ReplyDelete
  46. My dear Husband would be the King of Coupons if such a thing existed. Every Saturday and Sunday we get the paper only for the coupons. We each clip anything we may want now or in the future. Then he puts each coupon it its proper place in the file. Dry goods, toilertries, etc. The we make a menu for the week. Normally Sunday and Wednesday are our best days for "big dinners" which include more fresh ingreditents than packaged. We also try and make at least 3 totally vegetarian meals a week. Then we write the menu and the start day of the week on the dry erase board and keep it on the fridge. The we make a list of items we need only for that week. Such as ingredients for each day of the week or staples we are out of. Then we take out the coupons we have for what items our on the menu. Then we look at any additional coupons we may want to use that are not on the menu list. It sounds confusing but that whole process take under half an hour, we have many staples but try to make at least one new thing a week.
At the grocery store we shop for all the items on the lsit first. And finally after that is complete we only use non-list coupons if that item is already on sale. For example if we have a coupon for granola bars and it is not on the list we can only purchase said granola bars if they are on sale AND we have a coupon. Easy right? We probably shop at 5 grocery stores total (going to whatever one offers the best deals for that week). Last year we saved almost $500 at ONE store. Tada! Questions? Comments?

  49. Yeah, I am HORRIBLE at coupons. I use to do it but I ended up buying stuff I wouldn't normally buy just because I had a coupon for it! :) Bad idea! The key is to only clip coupons for stuff you need and use then try to match them with store ads. Unfortunately, a lot of the products I buy on a regular basis are not usually in the coupons. So I decided for me it wasn't worth it. I do know several people that are awesome at it though! Wish I could figure it out too! :) Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I avoid coupons like the plague, they just make me want more stuff! Stuff I don't need and stuff I wouldn't get otherwise. But stuff that's really cute.. and then I go get it because, it's on sale right! And usually forget to use the coupon hen I'm at the counter. Oops!

  51. I love the challenge of saving with coupons...it is all about the coupon vs. the sales at the stores. Sometimes I feel a little overwhelemed by it, but when I save I feel like it was worth it.

I follow a blog called "Three Times the Giggles" and she is the mommmy of spontaneous identical triplet boys (can you even imagine?!). Every week she blogs about her savings at the grocery store. She is a stay at home mom and their grocery budget (for the 5 of them) is just $300 including all products. She does a great job breaking down how she saves, what she buys and the stores she shops at. I hope Helen doesn't mind me sharing her blog with you, but I think she is quite an inspiration for savings!! Here is the link to her blog: http://threetimesthegiggles.blogspot.com/

Good luck with your coupon quest! It can be fun and rewarding once you get going!!

I didn't read through all of your comments, so someone might have suggested this, but www.918couponqueen.com is a great site for local coupons and general coupons. I love the site but am too busy to use it right now. You understand. : (

You might already know about the site, but it is wonderful!

Love the blog -- it has gotten me through the toughest times over the past few years. (And, though I shouldn't admit this...the boring class times as well!)

  58. When I have a chance I will peruse the interwebs for coupons. There are several great sites that you can select coupons and then just print them off. I never seem to have much luck when I buy the paper and clip them. You will have to let us know how it goes for you.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I love to coupon but I must admit- it is very time-consuming and takes lots of practice! Slow and steady wins the race. I would start by shaving off a few bucks from your weekly food budget (or start a budget, if you don't have one!) then move on to things like a coupon stash, weekly meal planning, matching coupons to grocery deals, etc.

The ironic thing is that I only dove into this world after my second child was born. Think of all the money I could have saved before that!!

Its a fun hobby and very much worth the investment for our family. It has inspired me to save money in so many other areas of our life, and show restraint from impulse purchases. Very freeing!

    ReplyDelete
  60. i think i spend more money when i use coupons. while clipping coupons i think "hey, that looks cool" or "wow. we totallyyyy need that" (when we don't). then i end up buying things that i otherwise would not have purchased. oh well.

  61. go to The Grocery Game online. It works, if you have a store in your area that's included. there's a minimal cost, but even using it for a while will teach you the "game" of saving so much money and stockpiling when you can get things the cheapest. I did it for several months... just as a full time working single mom of two teenage girls, I did not have the time to devote to it. It is very addicting, though! :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm lovin reading all you comments! There's lots of couponer's out there.

  65. I have always thought about doing that, but it's hard, because sometimes you have to go to multiple stores, and you have to make sure to buy only things you really need, not just because they're on sale. I want to be able to do that, too, though. There is some blog called like 918 coupon queen or something like that you might want to check out. Also, there is a coupon queen (not sure if it's the same person or not) that does classes at Whole Foods. They have a schedule there, I think they fill up really quickly. Wow. that was a long comment.

  66. www.retailmenot.com is great for online codes. Recently I got 3 Bath & Body Works shower creams for $17 with shipping so I didn't even have to pay for gas to drive to the store! They are normally $12 each, and I got the deal by combining the B&BW buy two, get one free promotion along with two codes from retailmenot.

  67. I wanted to buy some Olay body lotion for my mom's stocking at Christmas, and I had a coupon for buy a body wash, get a lotion free. So I got a $3 body wash and a $7 lotion. It was like they PAID me $4 to take both things!

  68. I started couponing around october last year, and I'm slowly getting the hang of it. From what I've been told, FL has somoe different rules when it comes to using them in stores, so it's taking me a bit longer.

Yesterday we went to three stores, and total I saved $30 outof $125. I'd love for it to be better, but if I average that every payday, it's not too bad.

I use a Couponizer to orangize mine for when I go shopping, it's small enough to drop in my pruse, and it has tabs already labled for you.

We buy two papers every sunday, and sit there and cut them out - husb usually does something else, lol. Then we go through the sale papers and see what we want, and I started paper clipping my coupons to that certain sale paper, than way I know I'm going there for this, and it's already on sale.

We also use Walmart a lot, and they only take one coupon per item, but you can also price-compare and they'll honor whateer stores prices are lower.

  69. I LOVE to shop with coupons. I have never saved as much as your examples but have done pretty well. My favorite site is couponmom.com.
I'm not much of a Wal-Mart fan, but they're all about "matching prices." I asked about their coupon policy and they said they will take ANY coupon as long as it's not expired. Savings can rack up there.
    Happy Shopping!
