The 3 O'Clock Hour.

Levi wakes up between 3 or 4 am every morning for his first "middle of the night" feeding. It is during this very early morning time period that I find myself sitting up in bed, rubbing my eyes and trying not to fall asleep while I feed little Weebie. It is also during this very early morning time period that I find myself thinking of and dreaming up the strangest things.

I don't know what it is about this feeding, but I always freak myself out. The other night, as I gazed at my little boys face and admired him as he cooed, I looked over at the door to our bedroom and out into the hall. The only light on in the entire house was the nightlight next to my bed so I could see to feed Levi, and I started to get creeped out.

"What if I keep looking out into the dark hall and see a silhouette walk by? Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, what would I DO?!"

I sat there grasping Levi tighter and continued to keep my eye on the scary hall.

"What if I look over there and I see MYSELF walk by - like some kind of weird paranormal time traveling Whitney... oh my goodness, that is TERRIFYING."

I started to sweat and get reallllly freaked out when I dreamed up that little scenario. I looked over at Husby, sound asleep with not a care in the world, and there I sat with a death grip on Levi and my body trembling.

I couldn't look away from the door.

"What if I see a little boy walk into the room and say, "Hi Mommy", and it's Levi as a little boy? AAAAAHHHHHH! And then what if I see myself run in and pick him up?? And then, and then..... AHHHHHH!!!!"

At this point, I was telling Levi to hurry and finish his bottle so that I could bury my head in my pillow and pull the covers up over my head.

Then I made the mistake of looking over to my right and seeing my reflection in the dresser mirror. There is NOTHING scarier than a 3am tired Mommy holding her infant by the glow of a nightlight in the mirror. No siree. It looked like the cover of a horror movie (one that I would NEVER see, because scary movies with scary kids in them are by far the most horrifying). I knew it was me and even that scared me. It. Was. Creepy!

Next, I did the worst thing I could have ever done. I looked into the hallway from the reflection of the mirror. TRIPLE SCARY.

"What if I see me and Levi dancing in the hallway in the reflection of the mirror and then I look over there and no one is there? Oh my gosh, HUSBY WAKE UP AND SAVE ME!!!!!!"

I was so freaked out that I burped Levi as fast as humanly possible, shut my eyes and prayed for morning to come....fast.

I don't know what it is about the 3 O'Clock Hour, but it really creeps me out. Please, Levi. Let's start sleeping through the night.

"I'll protect you Mommy. I'm Safari Levi. If I can slay the tigers in the jungle, I can protect you from the 3AM monsters."

  1. LOL I've had the same thoughts when I wake up at 4am to get ready for work. The house is super creepy at that hour!

  6. OMG...I did the same thing for a long time when my daughter was that little! I would get so freaked out. I eventually figured out that if I just prayed during that time it would make all the creepy thoughts go away.

  7. i do the exact. same. thing. i have to close the door to the nursery when i go in to feed him because i will sit there in that chair and stare into the hallway and get freaked out. last night, i swear i saw a flashlight blinking in the hallway. we have two dogs so i know that they'll let us know if someone's in the house, but i can't help it. i just stare and stand guard! gripping hudson as tight as i can.

  8. I completely understand because I freak myself out when I get up during the middle of the night to use the bathroom. The whole way in there I'm thinking "what if I turn the corner into the bathroom and someone is standing there?" It really freaks me out. Then the whole time I'm in there I'm thinking "what if someone walks in here and it's not Hubster?" Scary!

Levi is adorable. I love his little outfit.

  11. This is totally something that I would do if I was awake at this hour!

  12. I believe that the 3-4 hour is generally referred to as "dead hour". I think this is probably why.

  13. ohmygoodness. i always fall asleep around 3am (i have insomnia) and i watch television... but then i ALWAYS have to use the restroom around 2am and my husband is sound asleep, not a care in the world, while i'm turning on every.single.light. in the house bc i'm too freaked out to look in the bathroom mirror with only a nightlight. i SO get what you're saying!!!

  16. OMG. I know exactly how you feel. Except I can even get creeped out in the day! Mark bought us "unsolved Mysteries: ghosts" and I was home alone during broad daylight the other day and put that in and got scared before it even came on and had to turn it off. I get creeped out way too easily!!!!! God has not given us a spirit of fear....

  17. There is something about being awake at odd, dark hours that makes the mind go crazy places! Glad you didn't see you in the hallway....! ;)

  18. Oh my gosh, that is HILARIOUS!! I do that to myself too. It sounds like we both let our imaginations get the better of us!

  19. Man, I got kind of scared just reading your post. I hate waking up in the middle of the night. I get very scared sometimes.

  20. I'm that way with storms now. I used to like them at night, but now I imagine a massive tornado hitting only the side of the house where Caleb is sleeping soundly. I HATE IT! It really makes me scared! So weird.

  21. haha! I freak out about stuff like that now without a baby. I'm going to be terrible when baby comes one day! Love the pic!!

  22. HA! and I thought my daughters were the only ones with such vivid imaginations. Guess I was wrong.

  23. haha, so true!! It's amazing how we can psych ourselves out in the middle of the night. And that picture of your little boy is too cute! :)

  24. Ooooh I HATE being creeped out by my own reflection! The worst.

    Cutest outfit ever BTW!!!

  25. That is just too funny. Yep, that hour is scary in the house when you can hear every little creak and squeak of the house! :)

  26. I totally get this. I always think I'm going to see someone else in the doorway. Of course, then I'll freak myself out and make me think I had seen someone.

  27. I find this post to be quite sane. Of course, I am the person who has scared herself in the middle of the night in the bathroom because I see someone else there! Never mind it is ME in the mirror. I have screamed when someone sneezes, my phone vibrated, or any other little normal noise. I. Am. Jumpy. And, that's okay. Levi is bee-you-tea-full!

  28. Levi is just adorable, I'm so thrilled to read about how you and your new family are doing!
When I had my first child 20 years ago, I had the same fears, usually in the middle of the night, like you. You sound like you're doing just fine, but I suffered from postpartum depression and consulted a psychiatrist. The doctor helped me a lot and I was fine after a few months and didn't have the problem with my second baby. The thoughts you describe are called "intrusive thoughts" in the mental health field, and in new mothers are often the result of stress and sleep deprivation. If these thoughts persist and continue to bother you a lot, please mention them to you doctor. Depression doesn't mean feeling "sad", it often appears in odd ways during stressful times and can be dangerous if ignored. So do talk to your doctor. Please take care, and all the best to you and yours.

  30. haha this is funny! Do NOT worry...you are NOT the only one! You know what freaks me out..when I get up to potty and I have a maxi dress hanging on the bathroom or closet door to dry and I think it is a floating ghost..FREAKY, yes!

  31. Oh my gosh, okay I know I'm a little late on reading this post, but I just have to tell you I am so glad I'm not the only one! Haha, I always imagine scenarios of people breaking in and I try to plan my escape strategy. It usually involves some gang that busts in my bedroom and I do a ninja flip off the bed and basically jump out the window. Then I run around to where my baby's window is and bust her window out, grab her and run for my life! Poor husband, I never think what to do with him!
