Not So Typical Lunch Break.

Yesterday afternoon I wandered over to Mickey D’s for some chicken strips on my lunch break. As I pulled into the lot, I noticed a big booth set up next to the street with Ronald McDonald and several helpers out holding up signs.

“Hmmm, must be promoting a new sandwich or something,” I thought to myself.

I whipped into the drive through, ordered my chicken selects and went on my merry way. I parked in the nearest spot in the shade, which happened to be directly behind the life size Ronald and happy helpers.

My chicken selects smelled wonderful. The thought of dipping one into honey mustard had my mouth watering.

Until I saw it.

The happy helper wasn’t so happy. She turned around and held up the sign in front of my face. It read: “McDonalds cuts live animals throats!” and had a picture of a skinned dead chicken lying on concrete.

I dropped my chicken finger and covered my mouth with a napkin. Um, thank you, kind lady, for completely RUINING my lunch. Thank goodness I ordered fries, too.

I sat and watched as every car zooming by gawked, honked and yelled out their windows. Ronald made his way out from behind the little booth and was holding two bloody knives. Gag. Not the image young Mc Donald’s fans were hoping to see, I am sure.

They continued to parade around – bloody knives and dead chickens flailing. Disgusting. I wanted to hold up my sign in their face as I ate the delightful chicken strips. PETA – People Eating Tasty Animals.

If only I had the guts. Or the appetite.

Thank you PETA, for ruining a good pregnancy craving. Shame on you.

  1. Oh my. I understand their point, but.... it tastes so good!

  2. Uh, chickens are to eat. I don't know the most humane way to kill a chicken so it can be consumed, but good grief. Kind of a weak argument if you ask me. Cutting their throats seems like a very quick and painless way to go. And besides that, aren't chickens the ones that drown if it rains because they look to the sky with their mouths open? Um.

  3. chickens are defintely meant for food! I'm sorry they ruined ur lunch break...:(

  4. Now, that's just ridiculous! At least you ordered fries!

  5. I always think it's so amazing how people go up in arms over a dead chicken, and then those same people have no problems with abortion...priorities people, priorities!

I agree...I practically lived on McDonald's when I was preggers. Dumb PETA!

  6. I hate it when people try to force their beliefs upon you! That is ridiculous that they went as far as patronizing the customer! I love your new definition of PETA! I will definitely have to tell my future hubby that one....he will love it. One of the news sources released information a while ago showing that PETA killed 95% of the adoptable animals in their care.....now that is hypocritical!

Glad you were able to still somewhat enjoy your lunch!

  7. I am cracking up at your new description of PETA.

  8. i did a huge study on how chickens are treated in college and it is awfully sad. however, i would never go stand in front of a restaurant and rant and rave about it!

  9. The worst part is, those people probably only do such protests for their own image and don't REALLY care about the chickens. It's likely more a fight against big companies than for the safety of animals. Ugh, I'm sorry your lunch got ruined, that so obnoxious!

  10. Oh my gosh. How gruesome. I can't believe that an authority wasn't called on that. I would've been mortified if my kids would have seen that. I appreciate that PETA is concerned for the welfare of animals but, they definitely go WAY TOO FAR at times. Sorry about your lunch. BTW, I agree with Anne, too! :)

  11. grrrr...i would be so mad. i would make them reimburse me for ruining my lunch!!! what would we do with a world full of chickens running around that we didn't eat?!? :)

  12. Um, apparently those PETA people have never been to a working farm. When I was 6 I had great fun watching my uncle butcher chickens. Sorry to hear your lunch was ruined.

  13. sometimes people are so inappropriate!

  14. lol...love the Peta comment :)

  15. Talk about ruining your lunch!!! That is just sick! Hey when you get a chance will you email me? I don't have your email address and I wanted to email everybody that is getting together next week! megantree84atgmaildotcom. Thanks!

  16. Yuck..what a vulgar way to make a point! I personally think it tastes too good to boycott...Chicken Selects are my favorite :-)

  17. I've heard all the bad stuff anout Mcdonalds, but why is it that it still tastes good. But if I would have been in your shoes I would have most definetly lost my appetite!!

  18. Maybe it's the southern girl in me..but I LOVE meat!

  19. i respect anyone's beliefs.... as long as they do not harm anyone else. and obviously, this harmed you. so to me, this is a no-no. if you want to promote animal life, veganism, etc, why not have a fundraiser for a no-kill animal shelter, combined with members of whole foods or something promoting the benefits of living a life without animal products???? why does everything need to be so negative and mean? i just don't get it. i don't see what hurting someone else will do to further a cause.

  20. You know, I'm all for ethical treatment of animals, but I question their ethics toward PEOPLE. I can see making folks uncomfortable in a seminar setting, on television, or in a newspaper article, but IMO they took things a bit far. As a pregnant woman, I probably would've puked on their shoes.

  21. Being a farm wife myself, These people annoy me. My husband and I have lots of farm families as friends, and NONE of them treat their animals in-humane. And when it is time to slaughter (gross, sorry) It is done quick and painless.

I love Mickey D's myself, so sorry they ruined your lunch ~ I would have puked on their shoes too!

  22. I'm ALL FOR animal rights, but you catch more flies with honey--what you witnessed was inappropriate and I'm sure not very effective.

  23. I understand their point, but that was a little overboard. They don't have to be THAT obessed about it.

You're right little kids wouldn't want to see a bloody knife either.

Your acronym for PETA was funny!

  24. OH MY GOODNESS!! HOW TERRIBLE!!!!!! Sorry lady..I hope you got something else to fill your tum!

  25. I like comment #2. I'm sorry, but God created animals to feed humans. You don't have to eat them if you don't want to, but seriously, that's a little over the top.

    ReplyDelete
  26. All I have to say is WOW. ((With my mouth hung open)).

    ReplyDelete
  27. That's awful!! How disgusting!! At least they didn't have any posters about the mistreatment of potatoes ... with skinned potatoes lying on the ground. Then the fries wouldn't have made it, either. ;)

  30. gracious alive. that's ridiculous. yay for free speech, but mcdonald's shouldn't have allowed them to be there. especially with the chance that young kids could see that. that's horrific. "peaceful protesting," my meat-loving fanny. well, girl, you go out and enjoy your chicken next time. we'll see what tune they're singing when chickens take over the world and eat THEM.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You really wouldn't want to eat an already dead chicken. . . .

    ReplyDelete
  32. You have GOT to be kidding me. That is disgusting.
Sorry it completley ruined your lunch.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So sorry that lunch was ruined. I guess they don't realize that some people happen to like meat. We have to survive somehow.

  34. You crack me up! And bravo to you for being able to forge on with your chicken strips!! :)

  35. UGh Peta. I really dislike those ppl. Some animals are raised for that purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ohhhh my....people like these drive me nuts really!

    ReplyDelete
  37. ha! Hubby and I were just having a similar conversation about PETA a couple of days ago. Oh- and your "about me" fits me almost perfectly- except the part about being married to a med student. And the part about being pregnant. Okay, so maybe I just want to be a housewife and mom (eventually). Wow, this was way longer than I thought it would be. Anyway- you've got a new reader!
