This past weekend I was under the weather, in a pregnant kind of way, and watched countless numbers of made for TV Christmas movies.
And when I say countless, I mean countless.
The two channels I watched incessantly were ABC Family and The Hallmark Channel (which we pay for year round simply so I can watch the Christmas movies during the Holiday Season). It’s true.
The cheesier that movie, the better. The more unrealistic the story, the better.
No matter how many versions of “girl brings boyfriend home to meet the family for Christmas and predictable shenanigans ensue” or “girl falls in love with hometown boy when she reluctantly goes back for Christmas” movies they make, I continue to watch with glee as if the idea were completely original and thought provoking. It never gets old!
I’m a sucker.
I mean seriously, what says Christmas like a girl getting sucked into a snow globe? Or a Christmas card to a soldier bringing true love to the lumberjack’s daughter? Or the ghost of a mom coming back to be with her family for Christmas? Or Sabrina the Teenage Witch kidnapping A.C. Slater so that her family thinks she actually has a boyfriend?
And what is absolutely captivating is the towns these people live in. They are small villages where-everybody-knows-your-name, and the streets are glistening with Christmas lights. Everyone roams the town streets greeting one another and helping those in need. There is a blanket of snow covering every square inch and continues to fall through Christmas morning. The entire town attends the Christmas Eve service at the Church and they sing carols while holding hands and smiling. It’s perfect, really.
If you haven’t tuned in to these exceptional Christmas movies this season, well….shame on you.
What is your favorite made for TV Christmas movie? I guarantee you I have seen it! :)

girl, you make me laugh. and WHY are you posting this at 5:19 AM??? I am up feeding Carsyn, but why are yo up!?!
ReplyDeleteToo funny I don't know my favorite but I love the Hallmark channel I too am a sucker for cheesy movies.
ReplyDeleteHa! I love the A.C. Slater kidnapping movie! I thought I was the only one who'd seen that!!!
ReplyDeleteI know its old school, but I still love A Mom for Christmas. You know, with the store mannequin?
And as for you comment yesterday, hilarious! I can't believe we both thought about opening apron businesses (Annie's Aprons). It's so crazy how we haven't spoken in years, but we still share so many similar experiences! If you don't already have it, buy The Apron Book by EllynAnne Geisel--it's awesome!
Oh I love Christmas movies so much. Cheesy or not, anything that makes me cry is good imo!
ReplyDeleteI watch them all too. It drives my family of males crazy, but I cannot help myself. I have A LOT of favorites, but a newer favorite of mine is "Comfort and Joy" with Nancy McKeon. Have you seen that one? It's sort of like It's A Wonderful Life...She has a car accident and when she "comes to" she is married with children, but before the accident she was a single business woman. Anyway, I LOVE that one.
ReplyDeleteBut like you, I'm a sucker for cheesy.
Sigh...
My DVR is loaded with several I need to watch right now.;)
God Bless,
Amy:)
i forgot this time of year is about to start! too bad we don't have cable :( but my favorite christmas movies are home alone, elf, and family stone :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with The Pink Potpurri, even though it's not a made-for-tv movie, I watched The Family Stone (which was on TV, but I watched it on DVD) this past weekend and it is definitely one of my favorite Christmas-time movies! You laugh, you cry, and the dynamic between the actors in that movie makes them seem as if they are actually related. It's awesome!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness...I thought that I was the only one who loved cheesy Christmas movies! I just watched "Holiday in Handcuffs" this weekend too...too funny!
ReplyDeleteThat's funny. I love the cheesy Christmas movies, too...
ReplyDeleteI love the Christmas Shoes-sweet but sad...
My all time favorite Christma movie is White Christmas. But, one that I saw on television first and is a great family one is All I Want for Christmas. It's about two kids who want their divorced parents back together for Christmas. The little girl in it is adorable.
ReplyDeleteI love love love, LOVE ACTUALLY! Techinically it may not be a christmas movie but it takes place during xmas time and theres snow in the movie, soooo enough said :) If you haven't ever seen it, trust me its a truly lovely (hehe) movie!
ReplyDeletenot really sure about my favorite one? but I do love the cheesy tv christmas movies as well!
ReplyDeleteI love the Christmas Card! Where the guy comes home to the town he got a christmas card from while he was deployed
ReplyDeleteI love Cheesy Christmas Movies!!! I watched the snow globe one Sunday night. Lifetime will have some good ones coming on soon too. My all time favorite is "A Carol Christmas" with Tori Spelling. If that's not cheesy, I don't know what is...
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Christmas movie of all time has to be "Elf"!!! It makes me laugh till I cry everytime I see it. It is a family tradition to watch it and all laugh. We even answer the phone "Buddy the elf, whats your favorite color"? Yes we do
ReplyDeleteI love "Holiday in Handcuffs" (Sabrina and Slater). I made Hubs watch it Sunday night and even he thought it was cute. Though I'm not so sure how since his eyes were closed the entire time.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I did all weekend too!! I was home alone and switched between ABC Family & Hallmark. I am a sucker for those Christmas movies. I record them so I can watch them over and over...pathetic, I know! My all time favorite holiday movie is Home for the Holidays with Holly Hunter. It's more of a Thanksgiving movie but it is so funny, her family is so dysfunctional...it reminds me of my inlaws!!
ReplyDeleteI love White Christmas, A Bishops Wife, It's a Wonderufl Life, etc.
ReplyDeleteI made Mr. Cup watch the one about the lumberjack's daughter a few weeks ago!!!!!
Hi Whitney ~ I favorite is still White Christmas...I can watch that movie even in the summer! I love the Hallmark channel too!
ReplyDeleteHave a great Thanksgiving!
Hugz,
Michele
Christmas movies are the best! I saw on the news today that DJ Tanner (Candace Cameron) has a new Christmas movie coming out. I can't remember what channel they said it would be on.
ReplyDeleteWe would be such great face-to-face friends! I have the same obsession with ABC Family!
ReplyDeleteGirl, I am right there with ya! The chessesier the Chrstimas movie the better. Lifetime channel has some great ones!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love the Christmas Card Lumber Yard one..lol.
ReplyDeleteI also love The Christmas Shoes one.. It is a tear jerker.. but my all time favorite Christmas Movie is Miracle of 34th Street. I love the old one and the new one.. closely followed by ELF.
I gotta check out these movies I relished in them last year! I can't remember the name of my fave!
ReplyDeletewell...i heart the cheesy, totally predictable made-for-TV movies. they're the best! i love Three Days! It's got Kristin Davis in it. it's the one where her husband is a workaholic writer and takes her for granted and she's killed on Christmas Eve. but the husband gets a second chance at reliving the three days previous to her death. and he can't change the outcome, but he can make those three days incredible and like they should have been. it's so great!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen many, but one I remember watching a few years ago is The Christmas Blessing with Neil Patrick Harris. I think it is the sequel to the Christmas Shoes. Good stuff!!
ReplyDeleteOoooh... I watched these too! I saw one where Jenny McCarthy was Santa's daughter. It was wierd, but totally sucked me in!
ReplyDeleteNational Lampoons Christmas Vacation is one I have to watch every year!
ReplyDeleteYou're too funny!
ReplyDeleteI love the Christmas movies too. I watched a few this past weekend, but my butt wasn't planted on the couch like it is on so many other weekends. I have some catching up to do. ;0)
I haven't seen it for a long time, but I always loved watching The Little House on the Prairie Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker for these movies too! ONe of the many things I miss about no longer having Cable TV!!! I have two favorites: A Boyfriend for Christmas, and the other one isn't really that Christmasy, but it's called Lucky Seven I think. THe girl from Father of The Bride stars in it. Have you seen it? I LOVE that movie! And Patrick Dempsey - just can't go wrong with that!
ReplyDeleteDo you remember the Olson twin's movie "To Grandmother's House We Go"
ReplyDeleteThat is totally my favorite TV Christmas movie since I was little. My sisters and I watched it over and over again - and it didn't even have to be Christmas. We made a special point of watching it around Christmas though!

PS: I don't include the classics like Frosty and Rudolph in the made for tv movies category even though they do show on tv each season.
Hope you are feeling a lot better though!!!! That Lime Lovey better take it easy on mama :)
That's great! I didn't grow up watching the classic Christmas movies. But when I married Eric I was introduced to what he deems classic, and so we watch the following every year...
ReplyDeleteNational Lampoons Christmas, Elf, and Home Alone
I think I should add a Hallmark movie or two the the list!
I do the same thing with cheesy Lifetime movies. I watch every single totally predictable one they make no matter how many times I have already seen it!
ReplyDeleteLol. Now I don't feel so bad because Sunday afternoon when my hubby was working, I totally watched A.C. Slater get kidnapped. Cheesy but it put me in the holiday mood!
ReplyDelete:)
Oh my gosh, I totally watched some of those movies this past week. The snowglobe one...priceless. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker for all those made-for-tv Christmas movies, but my favorites are the classics...It's a Wonderful Life, Meet Me in St Louis, White Christmas, Miracle on 34th Street, etc.
ReplyDeleteMay favorite extra cheesy made for tv christmas special is.....well I don't remember the name but it was the one with Dolly Parton.
ReplyDeleteIt's really old, I used to watch it all the time when I was little, do you know which one I'm talking abouti?
I'm usually not a fan of made for tv movies....there is one however from a long time ago, probably 1990...It has Olivia Newton John and it's called A Mom for Christmas...It's about a store mannequin that becomes a mom for this family...you should check it out!
ReplyDeleteI hear ya on the cheesy Christmas movies. They may be unoriginal, but they are just so dang enchanting and fun! I think Home Alone will always top my list of favorites. It instantly takes me back to my childhood when I see it. I watched that movie over and over and over - year round. I love the soundtrack to it, too! Elf is probably my #2 favorite because I friggin' love Will Ferrel. Hope you're feelin' better.
ReplyDeleteI am RIGHT THERE with you! Oh my gosh! I could watch those cheesy movies all day and all night. I wish I could talk my husband into getting the Hallmark channel. He says I cry to much as it is!
ReplyDeleteWell I just bought two Little House on the Prairie Christmas Special movies, and loved them. They were cheesy and fun. After we watched them, the whole fam instantly was in the Christmas spirit and we are eagerly preparing by making gifts, etc. Its so wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog! I share your plight and have longed to be a domestic goddess all my life. Though still not there yet,I do work at home finally and have my own biz which leaves time for cooking, making a home for my sweet hubs and all that. So I'm half D. Goddess, half career woman I guess
ReplyDeleteOh man! I'm right there with ya! I like that movie that comes on ABC Family's 25 days of Christmas every year where the woman works in a department store and she's some kind of perfume expert and she keeps putting a list in Santa's mailbox and she gets every single thing she asks for.
ReplyDeleteOh, I love all the Christmas movies, too. Every one of them. I think one of my favorites is "A Boyfriend for Christmas." I DVR all of them so I can watch them over and over!
ReplyDeleteShannon
I have a great one for you, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear. It is seriously the king of Cheese!
ReplyDeleteI love it so, that I bought the dvd on EBay!
You may too young to remember it.
Did I stump you? It stars a young Scott Grimes and Mickey Rooney.
So my fave cheesy Christmas movies right now are Once Upon A Christmas and Twice Upon A Christmas. My 6yo dd discovered them last weekend and we've watched them several times. Sad, I know. But... IT'S CHRISTMAS!
