State Fair

Last weekend, husby and I ventured out to the State Fair. It is tradition for us, every end of September, to grab hands and head out to the fair.

Not for the rides.

Not for the gimmick items (though I love them).

Not for the animals and shows.

But for....THE FOOD.

Husby and I are Fair-Food-Freaks. We strategically plan out what we will eat before going and scour the newspaper for the "new novelty food". This year, it was "salad-on-a-stick", but we could not find it. Sad, because I really wanted a picture of it.

I am here to journal our fair experience and all of the thousands of calories we consumed. But don't worry - we shared each thing we ate. :)

We started the night off with an extra long corn dog. Nothing says Fair Food like an enormous corn dog. He likes ketchup on his, and I like mustard, so we had to alternate bites to satisfy each of our palates.

It's amazing to me all of the "food-on-a-stick" is represented at the fair. Cheese-on-a-stick is my FAVORITE, so that was our next stop.

Keeping with our long, cylinder theme, we got a piping hot, fresh, corn on the cob....dipped in a vat of butter and sprinkled with salt and pepper. Oh man, oh man....

After a few minutes of relaxing and people watching, we headed to the Polish Sausage stand. It was covered in peppers and onions and made our taste buds dance with glee!!

After this, we were tired of savory foods, so we walked around the buildings to check out what kind of gimmicks they were selling this year. It was fantastic.

We stumbled upon an Apple Fritter booth, and stopped dead in our tracks and wiped the drool from our mouths. Guess what our next purchase was?

Ay-yai-yaiiii!

It was ridiculously good. Ridiculous.

A few hours had passed since we arrived, and things were winding down. We were miserably full, but we had to persevere.

It was tradition, after all. ;)

Our last stop (or so we thought) was a cool and refreshing pineapple whip. YUM!

It is a pretty, light pink color with a mild pineapple taste. It will blow your mind.

As we headed out of the fair, already reminiscing of the fabulous evening we had, I had a sudden impulse. I smelled the jalepenos and simply HAD to have some nachos.

I thought, "Hey, why not? What's a few more calories at this point?"

They were delicious.

Husby rolled me to the car, and we ended the evening watching TV and falling asleep on the couch. It was yet another, fantastic night at the fair with the husby.

Can't wait 'til next year!

What's your favorite fair food?

  4. I LIVE for food. I love sitting down to a Fabulous 2 hour dinner with good wine & good company. I do have a very diverse palate. Sometimes I crave gas station pizza. But, if you are going to eat junk food, FAIR FOOD is the BEST!! (maybe because it is not readily available...) SO, my favorite Fair food is: any type of sausage smothered in onions & peppers. Oh! and carmel apples. And lemon shake ups. and elephant ears. and corn on the cob.

Note to self: Don't read Whitney's post before I have eaten breakfast.;)

If I had to pick just one fair favorite, I would have to go with the Blooming Onion. sigh.

I love the smell of all of the friend things in the air.

    God Bless,
    Amy:)

  17. HAHAHA! I was hungry at about cheese on a stick... then I started getting a belly ache! I've never been to a fair. YOU ARE SO TINY! I would have totally binged too. Your husby is a good sport - mine would have been like - "NO WE AREN'T SPENDING MONEY ON THAT!" I would have been like oh yes we are! Then he would have spent the same amount in beer, I bet! May I go to the fair with you two next year? I really really wanna!

  18. what fun! But ouch! My stomach hurts just reading this. :)

Nachos and funnel cakes here! But hubby won't let us eat such things. I think this year I'm taking the kids to the fair behind his back!

  19. I am a sucker for the fried candy bars.

Nearly four years ago, some friends invited us to a "fair food party." It was November, so two months had passed since we had had real fair food - we couldn't pass it up! We MADE all our own fair food - fried ravioli, fried corn dogs, fried cheese, fried twinkies, fried candy bars, funnel cakes - everything we ate that night was fried. It was a hoot. I was two weeks out from my due date with Hannah at the time, but the next day Hannah just "slid" right out! (That sounds gross when I word it like that - but I do think the "fair party" helped encourage a quick delivery.)

  20. Oh my gosh...you guys ate SO MUCH FOOD. haha.. I love the candy apples & cotton candy!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Without kids the hubby and I do the same thing at the fair...its all about food!!!! So..my first stop is always the funnel cake stand, dessert first?

    ReplyDelete
  22. mmmmmm definitely funnel cake w/ice cream... and corn on the cob. but only if it's dripping- and i mean, your face gets this shiny butter sheen to it dripping- bc that's the only way to eat corn. with lots of salt, too, of course. and then you go home and try to keep your blood pressure from exploding ;)

  23. PEPPER-BELLIES! What are those? A delicious Californian taste treat sold at the Manhattan Beach Old Towne Faire that consists of a ladle full of chili dumped into a bag of Fritos and covered with shredded cheese that you carry around and eat with a plastic spoon. Yummmm.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love when days or events are food focused!! That looked like so much fun! That apple fritter looked amazing!

  25. Saw your link on PW's website.
I'm always too cheap to buy stuff at the fair. I end up competing and then just eating the food I entered. On a side note, my hubby won't come with me to the fair. He said he once took a girl to the fair in high school and once you've seen one fair, you've seen them all. Awesome, maybe I'll just find myself a "once a year fair date"...

  26. You two must have stomachs of steel. Just looking at those pictures made my IBS flare up. :) Everything looks really good though. Even though my stomach couldn't handle it, I wish that it could! That corn looks especially yummy. Where was the chocolate?

  31. Oh my...you're too funny! I did hear at the Wisconsin State Fair that so many things were "on a stick". I absolutely love funnel cakes and that's the one thing I have to get at the fair!

    Hugz,
    Michele

    P.S. Any news on Lindsey?

  32. Looks like you had a great time:) We missed the fair this year. Wish ours was the end of September then it wouldn't be sooo hot! My favorites have changed over the years but I almost always get a corndog-mustard only. Used to find french fries with vinegar-yum, elephant ears:), and one year we had fried green tomatoes! Oh, and cookie dough ice cream in the dairy building:) Makes me hungry!!!

  37. It's hard to pick just one!!! I like cotton candy, funnel cakes, corn dogs and those small doughnut holes I think they sometimes call Tom Thumb doughnuts!!! Yeah, I don't think I could pick just one!

    ReplyDelete
  38. That is too funny! We love going to the fair and tasting all the fair food each year too. Last year I was surprised to see fried Pepsi. My favorite is def the funnel cake. Our fair is coming to town next week and I cannot wait.

  39. Ah! I love fair food! I always like to sing the song about the "fair being a veritable smorgasboard" from the orginal Charlotte's Web.

I love the corndogs, sauteed mushrooms, funnel cakes and a few years ago I tried Cheescake on a Stick. It was so rich, but so good!

I did try fried oreos and fried Twinkies and was less than impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm the same way - I looooove fair food! We share everything too so I can eat more of a variety of junk too. My must haves are roasted corn, Indian fry bread, and Polish sausage.

We have a tradition - every year, since the year we were married, we take our photos in the black and white photo booths. I have them all up on a bulletin board in my scraproom.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hilarious! Sounds like you had great fun!

My favorite fair food is definitely the corn dog. Yum. Then for dessert - funnel cake! MMMmmmm...

    ReplyDelete
  42. I freaking LOVE fairs! I really only go for the food also. I didn't see a funnel cake on your list, that is a must for me!
btw, tell your husby that I love his hat! we're major cards fans!

  45. Wanted to add that I am so glad for your friend Lindsay and the great news. Prayer is amazing and so is God.

    ReplyDelete
  46. ooh my favorite fair food is the chocolate milk shakes from the dairy building. They are heaven. Ohh and figuring out what the newest food on a stick is. In MN we have a think of food on a stick I guess. I think their are at least 50 different food on stick things we serve at the fair.

mmhmm my mouth is watering for some of that ice cream and pineapple.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Salad on a stick??? I'm still trying to picture the idea.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I am simply jealous. I am too cheap to buy all that food. And everything you ate, would have called my name. Yummmm

    ReplyDelete
  49. We don't go to the fair. It is a good thing becuase we would be tempted by all that food. So glad that Lindsey got a good report.

    ReplyDelete
  50. How come no one has mentioned the giant turkey leg as their favorite fair food? Nothing says Henry the Eighth more than chomping down on a big 'ol greasy, half-cooked, totally disgusting turkey leg while you are walking around enjoying the fair.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Love it! State Fair by Food Map--awesome!

    Blessings!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Holy food batman! I am a total foodie but I got a stomach ache just READING that! LOL - And how would one accomplish salad on a stick if you don't mind me asking?? I just picture hanging lettuce, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  53. how are you not in the hospital having your stomach pumped? haha -

but I have to admit that my favorite fair food has to be (in no order)

    1. corn dogs
    2. fried oreos
    3. cotton candy
    4. caramel apples

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ok, the salad on a stick was nothing more than veggies on a skewer w/ ranch dressing....it is upstairs of the QT building. Did you try the manacoti on a stick? It was SUPER....just didn't really need the stick since it was more a little bamboo toothpick that didn't even hold the manacoti. Have you tried the cheesecake on a stick....NOW THAT IS HEAVEN!!! Your blog is so cute and I've stumbled upon it several times...now, I'm going to link to you if you don't mind.

    ReplyDelete
  55. That pineapple whip looks amazing! My favorite fair food?....hmmm...that's a toughie. I would have to say french fries with vinegar. It's kind of a thing we always did growing up. My hubby hates vinegar on his fries but, I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yummm! We go to our fair for the food too :) My favorite is the german french fries, tempura veggies, fried dough, and that rainbow sugary popcorn! :)
