Masquerade

Last year, I became a sleep mask wearer.

I kind of feel like a nocturnal superhero.

It all started in the Fall of last year, when Husby started Medical School. He stayed up all hours of the night studying and I have this weird issue with having to have him in bed with me before I fall asleep.

I wanted to go to sleep. He needed to study. He needed the lights on. I needed the lights off. I begged him to “please just lay there with me until I fall asleep and then you can leave the room”, but that never worked. He always ended up falling asleep, too.

And so, I began to wear a sleep mask and he uses a little light he clips on the bed. It is the perfect solution to all of our sleep/study problems!

I have become pretty dependent on my sleep mask, and now I use one most every night, even when Husby is not studying. The tightness around my eyes and noggin feels great. It puts me to sleep instantly, and it really feels good when I have a headache.

Mom bought me the most beautiful sleep mask before we went on vacation this year, and it is almost too pretty to wear. It is gold and pale blue and the part that goes around your head is lace. I wore it for the first time the other night, and I simply could not keep it on. It is satin and it tickles my face like you can’t imagine. I tried so hard to lay still and try to ignore it, but I couldn’t. It tickled SO much.

(Check out Chris Notti's site for some fun masks. I am just warning you now though - they tickle.)

I was laughing so hard that I started snapping pictures of myself with my phone to send to Mom so she could see the pretty sleep mask and the humor it created. Husby was in the bathroom brushing his teeth and he glanced over at me, rinsed out his mouth and stepped out of the bathroom to ask, “are you seriously taking pictures of you in your sleep mask?”, he asked.

Yes, Husby. Yes, I am.

Ignore my Elvis hair. I am not sure what's up with that.

I took off the beautifully feminine and dainty sleep mask and put on old faithful – my 3 year old sleep mask from Brookstone. Is is the softest, most plush and fantastic thing you will ever wrap around your head. It is my lifeline.

This is what it looks like except mine is green. Oh, it is heavenly.

Comfort over beauty, friends. At least - when you're sleeping, anyway. ;)

(Don't tell my high heels!)

  1. I have never worn a sleep mask because I always thought it would drive me nuts to have something around my head. And I haven't ever had the need to use one. But I have to say, that one from Brookstone looks SO soft and nice. I would defintely be using that one if I had the choice. Although the one from your mom is very nice but thats so funny that it made your face tickle!!!

  2. I love that! I am SO going to try one! Also, my daughter can't stand the smallest amount of light when she sleeps. She spends a lot of time making her room perfectly dark. I will have to get one for her, too!

  4. I've never tried a sleep mask! I can't stand light when I sleep - any light... at all. I used to hang a big comforter over my window at night, but now I have two huge windows and a set of double doors in my bedroom so it's pretty impossibly to block out all the light.

This might be something I have to investigate!

  6. I can honestly say I've never tried a sleep mask, I may have to give it a whirl one of these days.

And the thought of you taking pictures in your sleep mask is beyond funny!

  7. This is HYSTERICAL. And, I know I would do the exact same thing :)

  8. You are so funny! I am the same way when I go to sleep. Pete always likes to read, but I like him in bed with me. I've just trained myself to sleep with the light on, but I might try a sleep mask!

By the way, I made the chicken pot pie the other night. AMAZING!

  9. I don't think I would be able to sleep. I don't like anything on my face. It sure is a very pretty mask though!

  10. I agree, that one looks too pretty to wear at night. It's like a trophy sleep mask. I haven't ever used one, but after your post here, I think I want to get one. We have a lot of light that comes in our bedroom in the morning, even with curtains closed, blinds down. I think this would be the perfect solution!

  11. Great solution! Good faithful looks so comfy, I've heard of ones scented with lavendar too, you know the scent that's supposed to help you get sleepy, have you tried a scented one? Our husbands are realizing that almost anything is now bloggable, ha!

  12. I never thought of using one of those! I've had some trouble sleeping lately, maybe I should try one of those.

I like the fancy one but the other one look's real comfortable.

  13. I have only tried a sleep mask once--one of the freebies on an airplane--and I just couldn't do it! Lucky for me, I can fall asleep any time, any place, in any conditions. It's a blessing and a curse!

  14. I have never worn a sleep mask, but you look so cute! I might have to give it a try!

  15. Whitney...you crack me up! I'm gonna go out and buy one. Anything if it can help me sleep.

I literally laughed out loud at the high heels thing. (o:

  17. I have the same issue about not being able to fall asleep with my husband in bed. :) And I'm a lover of sleep masks, if I can get them to stay on.

  19. I used to wear a sleep mask in college. It really helped make life easier when you were sharing a room with someone else. I don't wear them anymore, but I always have one on standby in case it is not dark enough in my bedroom. I can't stand any light when I am sleeping. I have a cute hot pink one!

  21. Just found your blog and I think we've got a lot in common. I understand the desire to be a stay-at-home mom with no kids yet and still working. Long story short, I was going to be just that this fall, but now I'm not. Anywho, thaks for sharing your thoughts!

  22. I have always wanted to try using one these! The Brookstone one looks more comfy. I'll have to get one so I can become dependent on it too!

  24. Hmm.. maybe I'll have to try wearing mine. The tiniest bit of light wakes me up too!

  27. oh, I'm so glad someone else has sleep quirks... I'm a nurse and years ago when I worked nights I would sleep with ear plugs in to keep from hearing all the normal daytime noise.. now, I still have to sleep with them even though its very quiet!! Maybe I need a sleep mask to go with it..

  28. I've actually been thinking about investing in a little night mask. The older I get, the harder it is for me to fall asleep. I can't tell you how many times the husband has wanted to watch tv in bed and I've wanted to fall asleep, but I can't because of the sound and the light. I'm definitely going to look in to it! Yours looks so super soft!

  29. You are adorable! I surfed over from Tanya's blog (Sunday Baker) 'cause she had such nice things to say about you!

    Have a great day!!

  30. I wear a sleep mask too. I can't stand the light and the hubby likes to sleep with the windows wide open. I love my mask. The one your mom gave you is giant, but very cute.

  31. What a great idea. My husband works third shift and he has such a tough time sleeping during the day with the light. We tried getting thicker drapes but with our bedroom facing south, nothing seems to work. The mask from Brookstone seems so snugly! I am going to pick one up for him this week! Thanks for the tip, Love your Blog:)

  32. Heya, stopping by your blog. I'm new to the blogosphere. Funny, my hubby and I also have our sleeping "habits" and weird things. We now sleep in separate rooms. Maybe I should try a sleeping mask, but I also need earplugs!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yjay first one also looks hard as a rock. Perhaps it's a car shade?!?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I need one of those! Apparently I sleep with my eyes semi-open (um, creepy) and my eyes get so dry at night! Brookstone, huh? I'll be making a trip there in the near future, thanks!

  35. Isn't it funny how we all have our little quirks. I'm not a sleep mask person -- my hair falling in my face tends to drive me crazy at night, but I do have my vice. I absolutely have to have my sound machine. I sleep to a summer's night sounds. My hubby teases me that the crickets outside gather at our house every night looking for the other crickets! I'm so dependent that I never travel without it.

  36. I think you should get a kick back from Brookstone...I went there today and bought one of the sleep masks in your post in pink. It is so soft. Mine was too silky and slippery and would spin on my head at night. This one is going to be my new favorite. Thanks for the tip.

  37. I swear I have the thinnest eyelids in the world and am wide awake with even a sliver of the sun breaks through the sky. I am a terrible sleeper and have two of them (I call them my "sleep goggles"), although I am not exactly happy with either. I'll have to try this kind!
