Pushin’ On Through.

Last night, on our way home from our Anniversary dinner at our favorite local steak house, I had an idea. I often get hair brained ideas that husby tries to talk me out of, but 9 times out of 10, he can not. When there is something that I want to do, I set out to do it.

I am an earring player-wither. I am always twirling, spinning, twisting and pulling at my earrings. I never realized how much I do this until one day I forgot to put earrings in, and I was constantly pulling at my lobe….it wasn’t near as much fun.

As I was twirling my fabulous Betsey Johnson earrings last night (see above), I started feeling for my second hole. Years ago, when I was in High School, Mom and I got second holes in both of our ears. I didn’t wear them very often and they eventually grew back together with only a remnant of a small hole left on my lobes. Last night, I was determined to re-pierce those holes. By myself.

We swung by Wal-Mart and I purchased some sterling silver cubic zirconia small studs. I prefer tiny diamonds for the second hole – so dainty and feminine. Husby tried talking me out of this the entire time in Wal-Mart and our whole way home. I asked him to hand me the sack when we were in the car, and immediately started jamming these tiny studs into my ear. The first one went half way through and stopped. I decided to wait until we got home so that he could assist me and I could have an ice cube to numb my scorching red lobes.

Husby is a perfectionist. It takes him 10 minutes to assemble a sandwich, whereas it takes me 10 seconds. I slap it on and run; he makes sure there is a perfect ratio of every item between the bread. My family tells him he has surgeon hands. Because of his care and caution, I decided it would be best for HIM to re-pierce my ears since I couldn’t see behind my lobes, and I knew he would do it right. He carefully wrapped an ice cube in a paper towel for me to numb my ears with. I held the ice on my ear and my heart was racing.

“1-2-3-GO!” I yelled. He jammed the first one through with ease and I heard a slight pop. Whew, that was easier than I expected. And I barely felt a thing.

Then came the second one. I pushed it half way through myself and he informed me that there was not a hole in the back of my lobe, so it was going to be a lot harder. Boy, was he right. I was squealing and squirming and clenching onto the couch pillows like a python squeezing his prey. Husby hated to hurt me, so he would push and stop. Push and stop. Push and stop. Finally, I screamed, “I don’t care how bad it hurts, just do it and get it over with!!” I was starting to doubt my decision to do this.

He claimed that it was almost there, and that the layer of skin between the earring post and the free air behind my lobe was as thin as saran wrap. Then that was the thickest blasted saran wrap I had ever felt. The thing was NOT going through. I took a deep breath, removed the ice and said, “GOOOOOOOO!” There was no going back.

He pushed harder than ever, I screamed and almost ripped a hole in the pillow I was squeezing, and we both heard a pop. Ah, it was like music to my ears…but it sure didn’t feel quite as soothing. I fastened the back of the earring on and ran to the mirror, prancing around flaunting my new pretty ears.

Of course when it was all over with and everyone was calm, cool, collected and there was no harm done, husby claimed, “I always loved it when you wore two earrings”. Funny how he wasn’t saying that before the whole fiasco!!

A memorable Anniversary for sure. Next year, maybe I will pierce my nose!! Ummm, nah....

If you have a second hole that you may one day want to use again, do not, and I repeat do NOT, let that bad boy grow back in. It will cause immense pain, discomfort and trauma. Thank you and goodbye.

  1. Um - ouch!! But not a bad idea I might add. I have second holes in my ears that I never wear earrings in. I should buy a pair so my ears can be pretty. Yeah - that's what I'll do. Take care of those tender ears, ok? PS. I'm a new reader and enjoy your blog. Thanks for sharing your stories!

  2. I was just flinching in my chair as I was reading that. I have a second hole in one ear that is almost closed up, and now I think I'll leave it that way.

By the way, I L.O.V.E. your Betsey Johnson earrings!

  4. Funny about surgeon hands my husband is the same way total perfectionist but a good doc must be a little OCD anyway. At least I would never want a surgeon who wasn't. Nice earring.
