To Wear or Not To Wear.

Clothes are a constant battle to all women. I find myself fighting my clothes all the time. They are a thing which I love; they are thing which I hate. Why are clothes on the rack in the store so much more appealing than the clothes at home in the laundry room waiting to be washed and folded? I often scream, “I have too many clothes!” as I am cramming them in my closet praying that all the hangers will move to the left just one more centimeter so my last shirt can fit. But then, you get me inside a store with mounds of clothes everywhere, and I suddenly forget my prior angst and rage, and I come home with two more bags full of “must haves”. This is a vicious cycle in my life.

Last week, I went on a rampage – slinging old clothes out of my closet every which way, as fast as flabby little arms would move. It was so freeing! I got rid of several trash bags full of clothes and shoes that I plan on taking to a consignment shop in the next few weeks.

I was left with a still jammed-full closet of blouses, shirts, skirts, pants, jeans, dresses, sweaters, shoes, etc., and yet every morning when I open the doors to find what I am going to wear, I stand there, in the same spot, for minutes on end with my jaw hanging open and drool falling off my lip. I have a blank look on my face and ultimately yell – “I have nothing to wear!”

I think this is a problem for all working ladies. When you have to get up at the break of dawn and dress nice and professionally every single morning, you quickly run out of things to wear. You don’t want to repeat something for at least a few weeks, so you are constantly looking for new items to add to your collection. It is tiring and frustrating and annoying and difficult. A constant battle, might I add.

And might I also add that yesterday marks my one year anniversary at my new job! Suddenly, it doesn’t feel so new anymore.

I learned a trick to de-cluttering your closet one time, but I’m sad to say I have never put it to practice. Maybe you will. Here it is!

Each time you wear something, when you go to hang it back up, put the hanger on the pole backwards. At the end of the year, get rid of all the clothes hanging the normal way because if you haven’t worn it in a year – you will never wear it. Good idea, huh? I am the worlds worst at saving stuff “to wear later”. I never do because when the time comes that would be a prime opportunity to wear it, I think “eh, that’s old – I need something new!”

Clothes. Can’t live with ‘em – can’t live without ‘em.

  1. I am not a big clothes person, so my problem is I look in my closet and really don't have anything to wear.

When I need new clothes, I'll procrastinate to the point when I finally do go shopping I need everything.

That tip about turning the hanger the other way really is a good idea. I have a tendancy to not get rid of clothing because then I'll really see how empty my closet is.

    Have a wonderful weekend.

    Toodles~

  4. Umm...what sizes are all these (I'm sure) fabulous clothes you just pitched? Because maybe, just maybe, I might actually be able fit into a few (few, because you're tiny, and I'm pretty sure I'm still not that tiny) of them, and you could consign them to Connie's store instead. Just a thought!

  5. Now you've made me want to go shopping. I've heard of the hanger trick and agree that it really works. I read somewhere that we only wear about 10 - 15% of our wardrobe.

  6. I have always wondered that myself. Why do clothes look so fun in the store. I will buy things come home and say I don't even like that color what was I thinking. Isn't that funny!? Lovely blog. I found you through warm pie happy home. I am a stay at home mommy and that was always my dream. You will love it. It is worth every bit of the wait! Blessings on you!

  7. Sweet idea about the clothes, even for doods.

I found your blog whilst reading the random memorandum and it made me snicker. I'm adding you to my daily reading list, but don't let that make you nervous.
