Irony at its Finest.

Before husby knew me, he saw food as a source of fuel; an energy staple to keep his body functioning. He enjoyed food to a certain extent, but have taught him, through the several years we have known one another, how to love food. I have turned my husby into a self proclaimed foodie.

When I first met husby, he was a health nut. His snacks consisted of fruit, and my snacks consisted of cookies. He didn’t have much of a sweet tooth, and fried food was on the bottom of his list. He met my family and suddenly donuts, cakes, fancy breads, greasy homemade tacos, french fries and masses of Mexican food were forced down his healthy little throat. Now, husby is not near as healthy as he used to be – but boy is he fun to eat with!

My family has always loved to eat. Our family vacations growing up were filled with great new restaurants and hotel rooms full of snacks for the evenings. We love discovering new foods at new places. We have big family dinners any time we are all together that ends up lasting for hours around the table, laughing and talking and eating. It’s great. My family, though, despises any type of seafood. My motto is: if it lived under the sea, it’s not for me! We don’t even eat fish sticks.

Husby’s family loves seafood, and husby will basically try anything that is set before him. He often orders the weirdest, most obscure thing on the menu (and ends up hating it). He is proud of his ability to appreciate all types of food, and is trying (and might I emphasize TRYING), to instill the same in me.

Last night, we were lying on the couch watching “The Next Food Network Star”. There were slabs of fresh fish everywhere and they were given strange ingredients to mix with the little sea critters. I sat there gagging and screaming and blurted “I could never be the Next Food Network Star because I refuse to cook or eat fish, and I hate ‘fancy’ food”.

Husby boasted proudly, “I could. I can appreciate more food than you, Whitney, because I have a much broader palate”……

as he sat on the floor eating a 98 cent can of Van Camps Pork and Beans!!!!

I looked at him, he looked at me, and we burst into laughter.

My husby is just so classy with his “broad palate”.
I am a modern day homemaker with a passion for family, cooking, celebrating, decorating, travel, and memory making! The Lord has blessed me with the desires of my heart in my husband and our two sons. We recently built our dream home and cultivating a loving and happy haven for my family is where I find so much joy.

  1. You guys are too funny!! Was he eating just plain pork and beans?! Bran and I have come to realize that I have done nothing but introduce him to horrendously unhelathy foods - sour cream, chocolate chip cookies, cheese ball, and the list could go on and on. How about we and our men go out and enjoy some food together some time soon? Yes, that sounds like fun.

  3. You're watching The Next Food Network Star, too? That was a STRANGE food challenge with the fish (white chocolate, fruit loops, cola, coffee, and something else, can't remember). I'm enjoying your blog!

  4. Poor guy. I feel partly responsible. I remember while you were dating, he was always rummaging through the refrigerator looking for fruit, yogurt, or some other milky fermented healthy bacterium. Instead, I was thrusting Cheeze-It's, pound cake, buttery goo desserts, and brownies down his chemical additive free throat.
