The Bigger, The Better.

When my parents transitioned me from a baby crib to a big girl bed, they didn't mess around with any type of "transitional" bed, like a toddler or a trundle .... I went to a full out Queen size.

This tiny little toddler slept like royalty in a bed fit for a Princess. Or a Queen, rather.

There are dozens of pictures of me asleep in my big girl bed - sprawled out in the middle using every inch my little body possibly could, curled up in a tiny ball near the top, upside down with my head at the foot of the bed, sideways and still having a good few feet on either side of me. My big girl bed was exactly that - big.

I slept in a Queen sized bed from there on out and when I went to college I was thrown into a tailspin when I was forced to sleep on a Twin. I felt so confined. I felt like a prisoner in my own bed. I felt like a piggy in a blanket.

When we got married, my parents blessed us with a beautiful bedroom suit. With a King sized bed. Now we're talkin'.

Husby and I take up EVERY INCH of our bed. Well, I guess it's kind of me who takes up all the room. We start out huddled together in the middle and then by morning, I'm laid out with my arms and legs jutting out every which way, and Husby is clinging for dear life trying not to fall off.

I have the strength of Samson when I'm in a comatose state. I cannot be moved and covers cannot be ripped from my death grip. I credit my hair.

When Husby and I are away from our beloved King and are sleeping in anything smaller, I swear we both triple in size and the mattress we share shrinks ten fold. We're floppin' and flailin' - trying with all our might to find a "sweet spot" to doze off in without jabbing each other with knees. It's near impossible, I tell ya.

I have been ruined by ample sleeping space.

I blame it on my parents and my bountiful big girl bed.

I have so many married friends who sleep on Full size - and that absolutely BLOWS MY MIND. I do not know how two people, together, at the same time, can sleep in anything smaller than a King every night and live to tell it.

What about you - what do you sleep on?

  1. A Queen is the perfect size for us! I feel so lonely in a King--haha! :)

  2. We have a queen now but we used to have to share a full size. At the time it didn't seem like a problem, looking back now i'm like how'd we do it! ha I could easily go for a king though :)

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hilarious! Queen size is perfect I hate to say!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I know EXACTLY what you mean! Every time I hear of a couple sleeping in a full I shudder! We have a full for our guest bed and people that sleep over always rave about it while I feel sorry for them. If my husband and I have to sleep in anything smaller then our king I go crazy. In fact I want a bigger then king, do they make that???

    ReplyDelete
  5. My husband and I are weirdos; we sleep in separate queen-sized beds in separate rooms! It's always been that way for us, because I'm a very light sleeper and he is a thrasher/snorer and we have vastly different work schedules. I really love our nightly routine of cuddling and kissing good night then going our separate ways. It's unorthodox, but it works for us.

  6. We have slept comfortably on a twin together, we do the full thing comfortably while sleeping at his parent's house, we did the queen thing early in marriage but we've done the king thing for a long time.
It's a big bed...but some nights it's just not big enough when little ones come in.

    ReplyDelete
  7. We sleep in a full bed - it's ok - we are thinking of upgrading though!

  8. ha, this is a great post. I always had big beds growing up as well. then i got married and moved to Europe where everything is so tiny. my husband and i share a british double. which is just barely bigger than a TWIN!!! it is crazy small and it took about a year to get used to it. now nearly 4 years into our marriage, i couldnt imagine anything else!

    ReplyDelete
  9. King! I love my king. I like to cuddle, until it's time to go to sleep, and then I need my space.

    ReplyDelete
  10. King! We're both very tall and very skinny (aka we don't take up much room as far as beds go) but we absolutely LOVE our king bed. Some nights, I can be on "my side" and reach my arm out as far as it will go, and I still don't touch my husband - HAHA!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I love my king sized!!! Oh, and then there's the....wait for it...Californian King!!!!ahhh!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. We started out with a Queen, but have since moved on to the bigger and better king!

    ReplyDelete
  13. My husband and I thought Queen would be perfect for us...me being 5'3 and him 5'5. However we slept in a king on our honeymoon and knew we couldn't go back to a Queen. We compromised and said that we'll get a King when I"m preggers!

    ReplyDelete
  14. We sleep on a queen. Which was fine... Until our son was born and spent the first six months in bed with us. I got tons o'sleep because night nursing is a breeze. BUT a queen is not meant for three. And that baby took up some SPACE. Come to think of it, he did when I was preggo, too. I'm lobbying for a king in our new house, but my husband thinks a queen is more romantic. So I said we can keep our bed and move it back in when the kids are grown.

    ReplyDelete
  15. We sleep on a Queen, but I'd love to have a King! We don't have any problems on a Queen, and we have plenty of space, but I just love King sized beds and all the room!

    ReplyDelete
  16. we totally sleep on a full and are just fine. what can i say, we're snugglers =)

    ReplyDelete
  17. King all the way. We didn't have a king until about 8 or 9 years ago but now I couldn't imagine sleeping in anything smaller.

    ReplyDelete
  18. When my husband and I first met I was a Peace Corps volunteer and all I had was a twin futon. We slept on that together for 7 months and didn't really mind, even though it was over 100 degrees with no air conditioner and there was no way to NOT be touching. Now we have a queen bed and it works just fine - we are comfy. We actually sleep cuddled up next to each other all night long in the middle of the bed so we don't take up too much space. I grew up in a twin bed and this is my first time with anything bigger so I guess I'm used to close spaces.

  19. In the UK we have king and super king, but our king size is actually 2 inches smaller on the top and side than a US Queen sized mattress.

My Husby and I will cuddle up right in the center and stay that way all night, often turning over simultaneously, so if we are ever at a place with a smaller mattress its not a big deal.

I have a hard time sleeping without him right up next to me.

    ReplyDelete
  20. J and I have a King size bed but we use the space of a full haha. It's nice because when we would visit family, they didn't always have a queen size bed to accommodate us lol. We are cuddlers and cuddle all night long -- it keeps me warm and makes me feel all snuggly =)
When I was little I had a queen bed too =)

    ReplyDelete
  21. We used to have a full...we've upgraded to a queen. There's no way a King would fit in our bedroom!

    ReplyDelete
  22. We have a Queen size. It's been perfect for us most of the time. Every once in awhile, I wish we had a King, but most of the time I'm cold and glad my hubby is close. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. We have a california king bed, and love it, but I am afraid my husband sleeps like you, I find myself fighting to not fall off in the night because he is a bed and cover hog, but I wouldn't trade him nor my bed for nothing

    ReplyDelete
  24. We sleep on a queen sized bed and I like that we can be close and cuddle, though sometimes more room would be nice. Mostly cause I hog the bed and leave Todd to sleep on a couple inches by himself!

Are you going to put Levi in a toddler bed or put him in a big bed too?

    ReplyDelete
  25. We have a queen that we share with our two 70 pound labs. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  26. We have a queen, but, that is because we couldn't afford a king/kind bed set when we were first married--we like out bedroom set so much and it's no longer made that we don't really want to trade "up" until we find something we really, really like. At our old house, our queen barely fit in the bedroom, so, I'm grateful we didn't have a king then--we might have had to sleep in the living room! Ha. But, I agree, a king is the way to go! That's like my favorite part of vacation and fancy hotel rooms--big beds!

    ReplyDelete
  27. We started out with an old, 3-times-hand-me-down full-size bed. When we moved last year, we bought a queen. My husband finds that King size is too big (but he still complains that I monopolize space and "encroach" on his side of the bed... explain that one!)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh my goodness I hear you! We sleep in a king size bed and love it, we call it our "cloud." Recently we went to visit friends and they had us in a .... i can barely say it... a FULL SIZE. Now, my husband is not a small man and I am pregnant (and on fire most days) so this sleeping situation was not a good one!

    ReplyDelete
  29. We sleep on a queen, however I'm not ashamed to admit that in times past, we've slept on a twin together :) ha!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Queen size for us and many times our little one is snuggled in the middle too, oh and the cat is at the foot of the bed in the winter, he gets cold. My brother and his wife have a full size bed.

    ReplyDelete
  31. KING! Unless someone wants to die :-)

    ReplyDelete
  32. We've slept in the same full-sized bed I got for MY big-girl bed at age 4 (not the same mattress, of course-LOL) for 25 years. I'd kill for a Queen! The kings we sleep in in hotels are a bit too big though!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Every time I sleep in a king bed with my husband, I feel like he's miles away and it makes me sad! I love our queen. It's a perfect size for cuddling or for having your own space.

  35. We have a Queen which is perfect for now, but I would love to upgrade to a king in a few years!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love how you are acting like this is a choice - like cup or cone, paper or plastic. Kings are much more expensive. I happen to live in a large city where 400 square feet costs me $2,200 a month. My bedroom is the size of a King Bed. So I have a full. But if my parents decide to buy me a house and fill it full of furniture, I'll make sure to upgrade

    ReplyDelete
  37. King. We feel crunched together in anything smaller. It's always a long night when we sleep in a queen in the parents; guest rooms.

    ReplyDelete
  38. California King... We have a queen in our quest room which we have slept on in the peak of summer because it is colder downstairs but it is just too small for us.

    ReplyDelete
  39. In college we shared a twin, which thinking back now amazes me that we slept comfortably! In our first two apartments we upgraded to a full which DH had been sleeping in for several years at that point since it came from his parent's house. When we bought our house we bought our first new mattress together and now comfortably share a queen. The full is in the guest bedroom but it looks so tiny now.

    ReplyDelete
  40. King size all the way! We had a Queen during my first pregnancy and it was ROUGH! We love our King so much!

    ReplyDelete
  41. We share a queen... I used to share a queen with my 85lb dog so it wasn't a terrible transition for me... but I wouldn't mind a king that way we can let the dogs hop up there too!

    ReplyDelete
  42. We share a Queen size bed. On Saturday and Sunday mornings our pups climb into bed with us to semi-snooze the mornings away. We're having a baby this January. I'm starting to think a King size bed would be awesome to fit everyone in on those lazy Sunday mornings but unfortunately there is no way that it will fit in our tiny bedroom :(

    ReplyDelete
  43. I grew up sleeping on a twin, then in high school I graduated to a full. It was awesome. Then I got married and suddenly the full seemed tiny. We finally got a queen and it's perfect. Although, I wouldn't complain if we got a king. My in-laws sleep on a double--ya know, the size between twin and full. They have a double in their guest room, too, and I always have to move to the couch before the night is over, just so we don't hurt each other in that tiny space. I don't see how my in-laws do it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh how I love our California King. I am a cover thief as well. He normally ends up in the corner fighting for a tiny piece of sheet that he holds to for dear life as well as his space on the bed.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm soooooo with you. KING all the way. When we visit my parents and sleep on a queen, it's horrible Neither hubs nor I sleep well. I don't know what we'd do if our toddler ever got in bed with us — no room!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. We sleep in a queen. My husband would love a bigger bed, but I like being cozy!

    ReplyDelete
  47. We have a queen and it's perfect for us! We always get stuck sleeping in a full sized bed at my parents' house and it's a pretty tight squeeze...

    ReplyDelete
  48. We have a California King- biggest bad boy out there! And we love it! Now whenever we travel or what not, and we a queen or a full, it is a disaster!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Haha! That is funny! I slept on twin most of my life, ocasionally sharing it with one of my sisters! When I got married we were blessed with a hand-me down full matress, but no bed to go with it. Recently we were blessed with a real bed! It is a full, but a wonderful fit for us! We love it!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I slept on a twin growing up, started out the first two years of my marriage in a full size and then we when we moved into our new house and bought our bedroom set we went straight for the king and we loved every little bit of space it provides. We hate downsizing to a queen on vacation now! Seems so tiny!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I do King, but a full would do us just fine, we like to cuddle.

    ReplyDelete
  52. We have a queen, but we need a king. I tend to sleep sideways because I also had a big (full) bed growing up! Three years later and I'm still not used to it yet...haha!

    ReplyDelete
  53. We have a king that fits perfectly in our bedroom. But we also live in the country and have a large house.

Why all the hatred Patrick?! Is someone making you live in a big city where cost of living is expensive?

  54. When my husby and I first got married my parents blessed us with a bed and we loved it. My husband's feet touched the end, so maybe when we got the Queen 2 years back he was thrilled. I don't know 20 years in a full, brought us closer together...Can't be mad that close!

    ReplyDelete
  55. KING! We love the space! I was cracking up at your description of sleeping on a queen (or yikes, smaller!)because it so SO true if you are accustomed to sleeping in a king bed!

    ReplyDelete
  56. My husband and I sleep in a queen size, but wish we had gone ahead and bought the king when we were shopping for beds. We were in a full bed to start with, so when we got the queen, we thought it was so roomy. Now we hate it and can't wait for a bigger bed!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I've slept on a double for as long as I can remember, then all of a sudden I'm in a small room with a single bed. I sleep with a body pillow on the outside every night because one of the first few nights there I almost fell off. 2 months late I'm still not used to it. Best part? I am jealous of your king.

    ReplyDelete
  58. LOL!! This made me laugh. My husband and I have a queen, which I suppose is big enough for just us, but NOT for our two large (doggie) children as well!! Which will just not do!!! :) Getting a king bed SOON! :)

I sure love your blog, Whitney. Most other blogs I tend to skim, by I read every word you post. :)

  59. We share a queen, with a baby in the middle now because we co-sleep. After a weekend trip where the best part was the awesome king size bed at the hotel, we've decided to upgrade to a California King once the baby is in his own room and we're ready to buy a new mattress.

We started out in a twin bed, which is almost comical, because I'm 5'11", he's 6'2", and we weighed about 230 & 16o lbs respectively back then. I used to wake up in the crack between the mattress and the wall where I'd gotten knocked out of bed.

  60. King. WIth my menopausal night sweats, I can't imagine not having some space of my own when a hot flash comes on!

    ReplyDelete
  61. When my hubby and I were first married, we slept in a twin bed for a short period of time.... yes, I said a TWIN. We moved up to a full, and then a queen, and just recently made the leap to a California King. It is SOOOOO big, and yet we still manage to take up the whole thing!

    ReplyDelete
  62. How about you try thinking about all the people that dont have beds?

    ReplyDelete
  63. How about you think about all the people that dont have beds, that sleep on the floor, bus benches, grass, etc. for being a godly woman you sure are materialistic.

    ReplyDelete
  64. we have a queen, but I would LOVE a king.... my hubby is a bed hog, and a queen is just too small! =)

    ReplyDelete
  65. We sleep in a queen. We're cuddlers. I can't imagine having all that space between us.

    ReplyDelete
  66. We started out in a full and I swear I almost fell out of that bed every night. But I grew up sleeping in a twin. But with two people it's so hard to sleep in something that small.

Thank goodness for a big ole Queen bed. Can't wait to upgrade to a king. :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Oh how I wish we were 2 in a King size! We've been in the same full-sized mattress since Ryan moved into my NYC apartment right after we got engaged. But get this- we were 2 adults in a full-sized BUNK BED! Well, it was a 'loft bed' per Manhattan jargon, but that really means bunk bed, you know. So even a full-sized bed could be worse- you could have to navigate getting up there wit ha ladder! ;)

  68. We had a king the first year we were married, but we've downsized to a queen. I felt like we were on opposite sides of the room in a king!! :) We are cuddlers though, so the queen works well!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Oh man! We had a full when we first got married, and with this recent move- we upgraded to a queen and it feels perfect! Enough space, but close enough. I felt lost when we stayed at my grandparents in their guest king bed! :) Glad you enjoy it though! haha

    ReplyDelete
  70. I was the same as you - I grew up in a queen bed and I took up every inch possible. Then I went to college and sleeping on a twin bed seemed impossible. And (sorry mom) we often SHARED a twin bed, and got so used to it that we became cuddlers all night long. Today we share a queen and probably will never get anything bigger because we barely use half the space anyway! What a difference from my childhood - guess I just needed him to tame me during the night :)

  71. I waited a week to comment on this because it really got under my skin! The topic of the post just seems SO spoiled and blind.I am becoming so aware of orphans and adoption and poverty... and perhaps this is why posts like this on your blog drive me nuts. My priorities now are living more simply so we can one day adopt and share our fortunate life with others... which means my son will sleep in the toddler bed his crib converts into AND share his room with a new baby. And wear garage sale clothes, not boutique. And I won't buy the $20 deoderant or let others go nuts buying for Christmas.

Sorry to be such a bummer-o girl... I usually identify with your peppy and family focused blog, but not lately!

BTW... My parents also blessed us with a bedroom set, otherwise we would have been on a twin from college or on an air mattress. And it would have been okay.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I have a full size and it's perfect for me and the dogs, but I cannot fathom having to share it with another person every night. I would definitely have to up-grade.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Cal King. Never anything smaller. My husband is a giant.

    ReplyDelete
  74. King all the way! Before we got married, my mom's biggest piece of advice was to get a king-size bed. I have trouble sleeping on anything smaller. I am the type that while I am sleeping I really must have my own space. lol
