The other day, I was at the MAC counter at the mall and asked an employee for my standard blitz and glitz gel eyeliner that I am running low on. He grabbed the product for me and then snatched a rosy colored blush off of the stand and dipped his brush in it.
"Do you mind if I try this on you?" he asked.
"Errr, sure!" I replied half timid, half intrigued.
I have to admit, I was concerned he may smear hot pink circles on my face and possibly draw some sun rays and smiley faces with glittered eye shadow while he was at it, because
1. He was a guy, and how could he possibly know anything about makeup?
and
2. He worked at MAC. They are known for outrageously bright colors (and funky designs ON their faces). And I am a fair skinned redhead. I don't do bright.
But I have always loved MAC and their shades are absolutely gorgeous. I just crossed my fingers and prayed he wouldn't break out the candy apple red tones.
He gently stroked my cheek with the brush and then proclaimed, "Giiiiirrrrrrrrrl, that looks fabulous!"
I sauntered over to a mirror, fully expecting a shade I hated and entirely too much blush, but I was pleasantly surprised. I loved it.
I should have known. His makeup was flawless!! It was very subtle and smooth. Now don't get me wrong, I am otherwise completely freaked out when I see guys in makeup, but at the MAC counter, anything goes.
We then moved on to the lipstick and he found yet another perfect shade for me. It was one that I would never have even picked up or given a second look at, but as it glided across my lips, I saw how wonderfully it meshed with my skin and hair.
I came in to pick up eye liner and walked out with blush, an eye shadow set, eye liner and two new lipsticks. Now that's a salesman. He was ten times more helpful than any girl has ever been to me at that counter. I just loved him!
He may have been a little....fancy, but boy did he have an eye for makeup! I wonder if he could come over and do my makeup every day? Hmmmm....maybe he knows a good hairstylist. ;)

Ha! That's awesome! I would love for this to happen to me. One time I had a fancy like that help me pick out sunglasses and it was the best!
ReplyDeleteOMG, the guys at the MAC counter ALWAYS do me better than the women. I've never had a bad experience there with a man.
ReplyDeleteNow those candy apple tones wouldn't have been that bad since you are a walkin' candy apple and all! Ha! Just kidding with ya. I'm glad it worked out and you got yourself new goodies. :)
ReplyDeleteI like that you used "fancy" to describe him. :) Hey...if his makeup looks that good he probably knows his makeup!
ReplyDeleteNext time when I am in MAC, I need to find a male make up artist! The females always put waayyy too much make up on me and make me look like a clown.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a good experience at the makeup counter. I usually avoid that area of a department store because of all the fragrance nazis who try to spray you as you walk by causing me to have an immediate headache.

ReplyDeleteBest hairstylist I've ever had was a girl with pink hair. She was funky and punky and everything I'm not and the first time I went to her, I was scared. How could SHE know what to do with this uber conservative, plain jane...but she did! She made me look fabulous! I just loved her!
ReplyDeleteJust goes to show you, you can' judge a book by it's, eh hem..."fancy" cover!
Isn't it funny how some men have a better eye than women on makeup? I love it!
ReplyDeleteI love when this happens!! Yay :) I think men can be better at hair too!
ReplyDeleteHaha. That is awesome. :)
ReplyDeleteCute post! :)
ReplyDeleteMakeup shopping is such a hit and miss for me--glad you came out of there with some good loot!
ReplyDeleteI actually love having a guy at the make-up counter! They don't judge, and they are always SO much more helpful than any of the women that I've worked with.
ReplyDeleteWhat a hoot...ok, what is MAC? Never heard of it before. And I never would have thought a guy would know anything about make-up either!
ReplyDeleteHugz,
Michele
I always think of you when I walk by a MAC counter!
ReplyDeletei know exactly what you mean... there are a few men that work at the MAC counters where i live and they will tell you like it is! and they always remember me! they are like "you haven't been here in a while, surely you need several things..." and they are usually right!
ReplyDeletefancy, limp wristed... whatever you call it, they are good with girly things :)

ReplyDeleteI wonder if he's paid on commission...
ReplyDeleteEither way, good for you for finding things that work! :)
I wear MAC, too. I actually had a guy from my MAC counter come do my make up on my wedding day. It was flawless! And he was fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! I have never been to MAC but that sounds like a great experience...should have taken a pic for us! LOL
ReplyDeleteI Heart MAC.
ReplyDeleteMy girlfriend is getting married New years Eve and someone from the MAC counter is doing her make-up and us bridesmaids! My friend did a run through the other day, and it came out A-MAZING! I can't wait to have my make-up done by the MAC people!
That's fun! I LOVE getting new colors at the make-up counter. I really like the free gift times with Clinique because you get all that free stuff to play with. I am always a little intimidated by MAC cause it seems like too much to decide on, but I'm also always intrigued by all the colors (love color!).
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm excited you got so many fun colors to play with and that you already know look great! Yea!
Do you have any pictures of you in this superb makeup?
ReplyDeleteI had the same experience when we were at the Sephora in Las Vegas while on vacation. The guy had on VERY tight leather pants (I was very jealous because I guarantee they were a smaller size than I wear) and a crop top but his makeup was FLAWLESS. He was so incredibly helpful! My mom still talks about the 'spectacular make-up artist at Sephora' to this day.
ReplyDeleteYou gotta let me know if that sales guy is near me ---- I need some help with colors!
ReplyDeleteI need to go visit him! I love it when make-up sales people can pick things out and they actually look good on me. That is rare. You better remember his name. In fact, pass his name onto me! :)
ReplyDeleteI am a frequent reader, but have never posted...lov eyour blog! I am a fair redhead and would love to know what colors worked for you! :)
ReplyDeleteHaha-that cracks me up! Glad you got some good loot!
