Life Phenomenons.

* Isn't it funny how if you visit another state that someone you know recently moved to, and they find out you're coming, they want to get together?  It's like, when we lived in the same town we never saw each other at all, why do you want to see me in another state?

* I think the whole "how are you" question is just hilarious in the context of asking it to strangers or acquaintances in passing.  We ask it but we don't really expect any other response but, "fine, thanks".  And when we do ask and get a response longer than two words we are taken by absolute surprise!  Like, "good grief - stop talking - I gotta go", when I'm the one who ASKED!

* Why do we talk up complete strangers in public but dodge the people we actually know?  I have stood and chatted with a complete stranger for 10 minutes on the baking aisle, only to round the corner and be like "Oh my word, it's my 5th grade teacher .... RUN!"

* It's funny running into people where you're not used to seeing them.  Like they shouldn't be or have no life outside of where you know them from.  It's like you don't know what to say.

"Oh my goodness, what are YOU doing here?!"
"Uh.  Buying bread and milk."

Like we have any more authority of being there than they do.  I can be here, but you?  What are you doing here?

And then you don't know what to say to them outside of your typical conversation/whereabouts.  It's super awkward!

* Growing up in a small town, everyone wants to graduate so they can get out of that "hick hillbilly" town.  And then you grow up and are like, "I just want to raise my kids in a town like I was raised."

Grass is always greener?

* When it's late at night and there's nothing to do, you take a sudden interest in things that don't matter.

I once stayed up entirely too late researching the life and marriage of a MAGICIAN in BRANSON because I saw a billboard and his wife/assistant wasn't on it and she used to be.  Had I thought about it in the middle of the day it would have passed through my mind and been forgotten.  But when the sun goes down, my mind becomes overwhelmingly curious and takes over about things that have no meaning in my life and I become enthralled with pointless, trivial matters - researching it until I run out of material.  Who. Cares. About. A. Branson. Magician. ?

Me.  Apparently.

Okay, so maybe these phenomenons only relate to me.  Maybe I'm just THAT CRAZY.  Oh well, at least you know now that if you see me in real life, RUN! ;)

(Totally joking!  I LOVE chatting with blog readers that come up and say hi!  I've run in to SO many of you this summer in random places and I just love that you come up and talk to me and the boys - and Husby if he's there too!  So please, don't run if you see me.  Come say hi and I'll ask you how you are and you can tell me the real life version.  I promise I won't be twiddling my thumbs.  I truly love it!  And you!  I love you! Who am I kidding?  No one will ever come say hi again after this post!!)

  1. I'm lol'ing because I know the magician you are talking about. And I totally talk longer to complete strangers than I do with aquatintenances! Kindred spirits. That's what we are. ;-)

  2. Our pastor spoke about the how are you question. I had to tell my kids when I ask them don't use the word fine...just like my 8th grade teacher failed us on papers if we used it or thing! Random, huh?

I don't live close enough to run into you!

  4. I love when you do posts like this! Your honesty and humor about life is refreshing. I live in a small town too and go through the same situations. You nailed it completely. A Target store opened one town over from me and I ran into someone I knew there. She demanded to know why I was shopping at her store in her town. It's the only store in the area! Where else would I go? I also spend way too much time doing "research" on subjects/people for no reason other than it's late and I become obsessed with the need to know. Ask me anything about the Royal family in England and I could probably tell you the entire lineage since Prince George arrived! I become the Wikipedia expert on all things trivial. I do have fun in the process and that's what makes it worthwhile.

  5. Really funny!

I'm the same. I think the State thing is that when you live in the same town or a town close by you think that maybe you may see that person at any time. If you're in another State then those paths will only cross if you plan it. Weird I know.

In stores the only people I slip out on are relatives I don't care to chat with unless it's at the funeral home.
And I never talk to strangers unless they ask a question. Sad but true. But I do ask anyone that passes me on one of those little motorized carts if they need help with anything/reaching anything. At 5'1" I just hope it's not on the top.

The "How are You" question only comes out of my mouth if I really want to know. And to be truthful I usually do.
I rarely see lots of people and I ask because I really want to know how they are.

The Branson billboard thing is just like me. hahaha. I saw an interview with Brad Pitt *and btw if we ever meet i'm going to kidnap that boy and give him a bath and wash his hair* and he never mentioned Jennifer Anniston his wife and I thought YEP! problems. Googled them to death and wasn't but a few weeks until trouble in paradise became the divorce/infidelity story of the century all over the web.

I don't know why we are wired to take notice of things that don't matter or would change one thing in our lives but we are. Or we are just nosy. I go with nosy for me. :)

    I love this post. Jake's a Girl

  6. Is it weird that I now want to know what happened to the Branson magician's wife??? Did they break-up???

  7. Love this! My favorite is when I see students outside of school (I teach 5th grade). Some of them are too cool and won't talk to me, others get super excited, and then some act like I'm from another planet and shouldn't be let out of the school. But no worries, I run from them in the store hoping they don't see me :)

  8. Haha! I live in a big city so I don't know about small town living, and I rarely run into people I know (I live in TX so it most likely will not happen, but I would love to run into you somewhere! I would totally come up and say hi!)

The "how are you" question is funny...it never fails someone will ask me and I will answer, and then I will ask them and they look at me like I'm crazy! I guess they are just expecting me to say "fine" and leave it at that. I just feel like it's common courtesy to ask them if they asked me LOL.
