A Painted Room is a Happy Room!

Husby and I built a house a year ago and as we moved out of our apartment we danced and sang and high-fived each other the whole way out. You have never seen two happier people. You see, we were stuck in our miniscule apartment for two very long years. There were often times I would go to put something away and burst in to tears because there was simply no where to put it. It was impossible to keep clean because the place always looked cluttered due to NO storage space. It was horrible. Husby was ready to get me out of there to get some closet space and a smile on my face.

We moved in a year ago July, and the day we walked through our big, beautiful wooden door with the keys in our sweaty little hands, I commenced to decorating. Ah, I was in my element. I had a blank, empty house, waiting to be filled and painted and organized and home-afied.

I inherited a love for decorating from my Mom. She has the classiest, prettiest home my eyes have ever seen and when you go there, you never want to leave. We both love European décor, and our houses both emulate a very French vibe. I love when Mom redecorates a room because I take all of her old stuff that she wants to replace! It really came in handy that she is redoing almost her entire house this year – I have scored so many fabulous things! Of course, things that I could never afford because we are poor couple going through Medical School.

Ready for a Whitney’s Decorating Tip? I’ll sneak one in here for you today!

I recently painted our bedroom a dark chocolate brown. When painting walls dark, you always want to accent with light colors in your decor to balance the feel of the room. If you have dark walls, dark bedspread, dark pictures – then well, your room will feel like a dungeon, and we don’t want that now do we? No, we don’t, because dungeons are scary. Also, if you have light walls, I like to offset the room with dark accents – large pictures with rich, bold frames, furniture with deep colors, a large area rug with color and pattern, etc.

We used the Ralph Lauren Regent Metallics paint and were SO pleased with the outcome. The metallic paint adds a hint of a shimmer, and really sets off the mood that I was going for in our bedroom. Our walls are a dark chocolate brown and when we open the windows or turn on the lamps, you can really see the little flecks of gold throughout the paint. It’s just gorgeous, and I really recommend using it.

Here is my example of a dark room with light accents. Welcome to our bedroom!

I love the curtains and how they just fall and gather on the floor! It is exactly what I was hoping for.

I couldn't get the entire room in the shot (the other two walls and the pictures on them), but I think you catch my drift. Also, now (after the picture was taken), I have two large pictures hanging on either side of our bed. Let's pretend they are in this picture and you can get an even better idea of what it's like. :)

So, if you are thinking of painting a room any time soon, and you want a glowing shimmer to set it off and make it pop - I really do recommend the Ralph Lauren Regent Metallics. We purchased ours at The Home Depot and there are hundreds of colors to choose from.

Happy decorating!!!
