Pillow Talk.

I am Mrs. Finicky when it comes to my pillows. Much like Goldilocks, I search and search until I find one that is just right. My pillow preference is down feather, but wouldn't you know, Husby is allergic. When we married, I switched to faux down. It works and I can hardly tell a difference. Husby's pillow philosophy is much like that of a flapjack: "the flatter the better". I can not sleep on a flat pillow to save my life. I toss and turn all night and end up folding it in half to give it some fluff.

Sadly enough, my pillow perfection doesn't last long. I can not go more than a year and a half or so with the same pillow. When it loses it's fluff - I toss it and buy a new one. Husby and I have been married for 5.5 years and I am currently on my fourth pillow.

Husby is still using the one we came home to after our honeymoon.

Yipe.

I polled my Facebook friends the other day and asked how often they change pillows. Someone then enlightened me of the nastiness that is DUST MITES, and she told me about a horrific episode of Oprah that said after about 6 months, your pillow is 90% dust mites.

Gag. Hurl. Sick Sick Sick!

Needless to say, I tossed Husby's beloved pillow and demanded we go shopping the very next day. We got a little pillow possessed and bought four. Hey, they were having an amazing sale and backups never hurt anyone. Right? I wonder if they get dust mites in the closet? If so, I'm outta luck.

Why don't I think of these things in the store? Oy.

Levi recently started using a pillow and he looks like such a big boy when he is asleep! We plan on moving him to a big boy bed in the next few months (after we finalize where we'll be for residency) and when we get going on his new room! That will probably be sometime around his 2nd birthday, if we are still here. I'm so excited!

There has been a lot of pillow action around our house lately, so let's talk pillows. How often do you change yours? Are you a flat or fluffy?
I am a modern day homemaker with a passion for family, cooking, celebrating, decorating, travel, and memory making! The Lord has blessed me with the desires of my heart in my husband and our two sons. We recently built our dream home and cultivating a loving and happy haven for my family is where I find so much joy.

  1. Well that makes me wonder if they would collect dust mites in your closet.. wouldn't they also do the same just sitting in the aisles of the store?

I'm the same way about my pillows, I love them and its kind of a "til death do us part" relationship... but now I'm thinking I need new ones!

  2. We have great contoured latex pillows. We've had them for a while but I'm told dust mites can't live in them!

  3. I love down pillows. And when I sleep I have to have two. Its weird, but just one pillow is too flat by the end of the night. We change them out probably every year or so, but after reading about the dust mites I might so that a little more frequently! Ick....

  4. I use a contoured pillow that we've had for a couple years now. Never looked into the dust mite issue. Down pillows get too uncomfortable for me when I stay at hotels.

  5. Forget pillow talk. I got very sad thinking about Levi being almost 2 years old and all of you maybe moving away. Stop.

  6. My husband sleeps on the flat pillow I slept on in college. Yes, it is most likely full of dust mites, but so is your mattress if it is more than a few years old. My husband will not get a new pillow, and I figure that's up to him (although it is gross). We did buy some memory foam pillows and took them back because they were awful. :(

  7. My husband LOVES flat pillows -- I have to have a fluffy pillow too. I think I have had my current one for the past 2 years..it's still pretty fluffy thankfully =)

  8. Our pillows are the tempurpedic symphony pillows and our mattress is a latex core mattress ... both of which are advertised as "dust-mite resistant". I have no idea if that's true, but I will happily and ignorantly buy into the false advertisement for peace of mind!! ;)

  9. This is funny--my husband is so particular about his pillow but thinks nothing of using a gross, yellowed-pillow that is ages past its prime!!

  10. I'm a firm fluffy, and I take my pillow everywhere. I don't like any one else's pillows, although it is probably time for a new one. You don't want to know how old mine is...

  11. Have you heard of sleep number beds? We don't have one, but I went to the store once to see what the fuss was all about and they have all of these awesome pillows that you can customize. They're not cheap, but they are worth the money to be sure. I've had mine for about a year and it's time to get a new one. I say one a year? Don't know if that's too often or too long. I think I sleep hard on my pillows and wear them out! Happy pillow hunting!

  12. My husby Jeff is VERY allergic to dust mites (or more specifically their poo)

Dust mites feed off of dead skin cells (like the ones you leave on your pillow) and then their poo is what people are mostly allergic to in "dust"

There are dust mites everywhere, even in your closet, but they will probably not eat/breed on your pillow until you start to use it. In the meantime though, if it were jeff, I would keep the extras in a plastic bag.

You can also buy dust mite covers for your pillows, they are a super fine thread count, and you put them on under your normal pillowcases.

    Best of luck!

  13. Ewwwww I'm so guilty of having a 90% dustmite pillow. Vomit.

I'm in the "the flatter the better" pillow camp, which means that an old, ratty, dustmite infested pillow probably feels best to me. Maybe I can find a good, new flat pillow this weekend.

And wait- how is it possible that Levi is almost 2? How is time going by so fast? I started reading your blog when you were pregnant with Levi and I was pregnant with Dylan. Make the time stop!

  14. Oh Whitney!

I am with you on this one, for sure!

Fluffy pillows, and toss them when they get old and lose their poof! Otherwise it makes my neck ache!

  15. i like a very flat pillow too! my husband has a tempurpedic pillow and his gives me a headache to sleep on it.

btw - i LOVE your blog!

  16. Loved this post. Defiantly made me laugh. I must say, that I have to have lots of pillows, and the fluffier the better. I am constantly changing pillows and getting new ones. On the other hand my husband has the same pillow from before we were married. Well lets just be real, before we started dating a decade ago. It's even nick-named "chunky". Can you guess why? Yep it's old and chunky inside. And he knows it's time for a new one, he just loves his old one. Ew! lol

  17. We are super crazy about our pillows and actually I have to sneak some because I like them better (: I know about the dust mites and I need to get new pillows because I have had some for years! GROSS!

  18. Fluffy pillows are the way to go!! And we will spend $$cha-ching$$ on a good pillow...and mattress for that matter. We're serious about our sleep, haha!!!

  19. I use a memory foam contour pillow. It's great. And now I think I need to go buy a new one...hee hee!

  20. Right with you on this...fluffy pillows and then they get tossed when they started getting flat or a bit older.

  21. I am officially a follower now instead of just stalking it :) I love it!

  22. I'm fluffy, all the way. My husband could care less about his pillow. There is usually a fight nightly about whose pillow is whose, mainly because he takes mine without caring that I actually care about my pillow! It's a big deal in this house.

I think I get a new one every year or so because the fluff factor disappears. I'm with you.

  23. I like flat pillows. My boyfriend sleeps with three HUGE pillows and even one of his pillows is too much for me. I hate the pillows at the hotels because they are giant, and now that I think about it they have so many dust mites from different people's dead skin!! Gross! I think I need to go buy a new "flat"pillow now!! :)

  24. I'm definitely a fluffy bunny when it comes to my pillows! I use the dust protectors for mine, though, because I'm allergic to dust. All you have to do it zip your pillow inside, and put a pillow cover over the whole thing. It's just like an extra pillow cover and it takes care of the whole problem! :)

  25. I have horrible allergies, and im a germa-phobe so I change mine every 4 months....

But im the same way takes me forever to find a good one

  26. i like my pillows on the fluffier side - so it's like sleeping on a cloud...
