The Glamorous Life of a New Mommy

Saturday afternoon I got caught up on all of my glamlifehousewife@gmail.com e-mails. I had actually forgotten that I hadn't checked it since a few days before I had Levi, so I had a lot of correspondence to get caught up on. It was so much fun - I just love getting e-mails full of questions, encouragement and advice from my sweet bloggy friends!

Anyway, one particular person requested that I write about how I am doing as a Mommy. Am I still cooking dinner every night? Do I still wear make up every day? Basically, is life at home so glamorous now that I have a new baby to take care of?

So, I thought I would elaborate.

Do I still wear make up every day?

I have had a lot of people tell me "don't worry if you stay in your sweat pants all day or don't shower for days," so when I came home from the hospital, I was pretty much expecting the worst - no sleep, no time for anything other than tending to Levi, etc. Well, so far it has been a lot easier than I imagined. It has helped tremendously that I have had Husby here for the entire month (oh how I dread rotations starting on Wednesday), so I have definitely not gone a day without a shower and make up! I am the type of person who is totally unproductive if I don't get up and get ready, so a shower and make up is necessary for a successful Whitney. The day we after we got home from the hospital, Levi had a check up appointment, so we had to get up and around early in the morning. Turns out, we had to go back to the Doctor every morning for the next 3 days, so sweat pants and no make up were not an option anyway. I think it was good that we had to do that because it got me in the habit of getting up and getting ready, even with a newborn.

There was one day a few weeks ago, that I got up, put my sweat pants on and sat there. I thought, "I think this is what I'm supposed to do." After about an hour I thought, "I'm hot and I'm dirty and I've had it with these sweat pants!" So I jumped in the shower and got ready. HA!

It is so much easier to shower, do make up and put "real" clothes on when Husby is here, but there have been several days this month when he has not been here. The first day alone with Levi, it literally took me 2 hours start to finish, to get ready. I kind of freaked out and thought - "how am I going to do this if I have to be somewhere at a certain time and we're alone?!" I have since discovered that if I do it immediately following Levi's 9am-ish feeding, burping, changing, then I have plenty of time to get it done (and if we have to be somewhere early, I get up and start after his 6am-ish feeding - just to be safe). If I sit around and wait until 3pm to do it, then my house is usually a disaster area and I have wasted my day away being unproductive. Is anyone else like this? It's like I just can't function correctly if I'm not clean and presentable!

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't do full make up and put on a dress and pearls every day. If I know we are not heading out of the house, I wear jeans and a t-shirt or work out attire and wear light make up. Oh, and perfume. It's what works for me and it gives me the boost I need. Might sound crazy, but I just FEEL better all around if I've showered and dressed.

Is your house always kept up and clean?

I have found that it takes me forever to get things done around the house now. What usually took me 3 hours to do, now takes me all day long! Of course, I take many breaks to cuddle with my baby boy because sometimes he just stares at me from his swing and I know he's thinking, "come play with me, Mommy!" So, I do.

I love doing Levi's laundry. It's all so little that I can throw everything in one load and viola - it's done and it smells delicious. Husby and my laundry piles up a lot faster and is not near as much fun to keep up with.

I make sure that our living room and kitchen are clean every day. This is where we are the majority of the time that we are home, so I can not stand for it to be messy. It is also the area that people see, so if we have drop-in's, I am usually always prepared. Now. Our bedroom? Right now it is 100% unpresentable. There are bottles, diapers, wipes, clothes and whatever else we managed to throw in there EVERYWHERE. My plan was to get in there and make it sparkle this afternoon, but instead, I am on here telling you about it.

And if you happen to be one of the "drop-in's", expect to step around a Boppy Swing and a Baby Einstein Floor Gym. These are bound to be in sight at any given time. :)

Are you still cooking dinner every night?

Ha.

Haha.

Hahahahahahahahahaha.

I'm sure that would be Husby's response if he heard this question. No. I have not "cooked" a supper yet since having Levi. Sure, I have thrown a pizza in the oven or made easy sandwiches, but I have not cooked a full blown meal in a very long time. Oops. After Husby starts rotations and we in more of a schedule than we are now, I have high hopes of creating a grocery list, a budget, and going once a week so that I can cook regularly again. I'm so out of habit now, I'm not sure I remember what to do! ;)

Have you been out of the house often since having the baby?

This is another funny question. Little Levi had his first restaurant experience when he was 4 days old! Since then, we have been all sorts of places - lots of restaurants, lots of stores, several different towns, Church, trips to people's houses...even to two different malls!

I can't imagine staying here being a hermit all day. I need sun! I need action! I need people! I am not allowed to drive until my 6 week appointment, so I have people pick us up (or Husby drive us if he's here) and we go and do and play. Just because Levi is little doesn't mean I have to hide at home. Doctors say as long as they are healthy and happy, then you can go anywhere! I have to be careful with the awful heat here, though. Poor little guy just gets so hot in his little car seat.

But yes, some weeks we are gone throughout the day more than we are home.

So. There ya have it. A glimpse into the World of Whitney With a Newborn. Any other questions, just let me know and I'll give you my perspective. I love how we are all different as Mommy's and parents, and I find it interesting to hear other people's experiences. Such a fun new chapter of my life!

  1. I'm the same way with cleaning--as long as the living room and kitchen are clean, I'm good to go! :) Ha! At first I put a lot of pressure on myself to keep everything spotless, but I've learned more and more (especially with a crawler) that the house is SUPPOSED to be lived in. And will therefore look like it!!

Getting out is good, too. We took Caleb to my favorite Mexican restaurant when he was four days old. They're so portable at that age, you gotta do it while you can!

And oh my goodness, a little make-up goes a long way. I shower every other day, but make-up must be on every day. I don't feel ready for my day without it!

  3. Good for you girl, it's nice to be clean and fresh...Levi doesn't want to snuggle with a stinky Mommy.

  4. I don't have a baby, but I totally understand why you have to shower and get dressed in the morning. I sometimes lay around all day without doing that and I feel like I haven't done anything all day long.

    Great insight into your life.

  5. I think that the first few months with our babies is a real "grace period" they usually sleep a ton so, we are able to chill out a little before they start staying awake more and moving around. Sounds like you are doing great. I agree with the clean kitchen thing. I MUST have my kitchen clean at all times. Continued blessings with new mommyhood!

  6. Did you know that you can go into your glamlifehw gmail account and have it forwarded to your regular gmail account? I just figured it out the other day. It is so much easier. I always forget to check my blog e-mail account. Now it goes straight into my regular one. easy peasey!

  10. It's so great to hear how life is for you now that you're a mom. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I can hardly wait!!

  11. I felt the same as you when it came to showering and getting dressed every day. It just seemed to set the stage for a more productive day...and a mommy in a better mood. I used to sit my tiny newborn in his bouncy seat in the middle of our bed while I dried my hair and it got to the point that the hairdryer would soothe him and lull him to sleep. You sound like you're doing so great!

  12. Sounds like you are just a pro already! :) I'm like you...getting up and dressed just helps the whole day go better. And a little perfume doesn't hurt either!

  13. Thank you for all of the updates! Since I am somewhat new to your blog, I decided to start from the beginning and have read almost all of your posts (I try to read about 4 a day). My favorite so far was the one when you first found out you were having Levi and you were worried he would disappear in your tummy or come out with a mouth full of teeth! I could not stop laughing for a good 20 minutes. Thanks for sharing!! I can't wait to read more!

  14. Hey Whitney,
I have a random question for you. My younger brother is graduating from OBU next year and is a BioChem major applying to M.D. and D.O. programs. He has been researching OSU and I thought of you guys. (That's where Darin is going right?) Is he doing M.D. or D.O.? I just wanted to get some insight for him from someone who is actually going through it. My email is stephanij@gmail.com if you don't want to answer on here :) Thanks so much!

And by the way, your little Levi is just too adorable! Those cheeks are unreal :)

  16. I remember those post-baby days. It was hard to find time to feed myself and it took all day to get one little thing done!

It took me a long time to get into the rhythm of cooking.

Glad your husband is there for this month. He can be an involved parent from the beginning. That's so important for all of you.

If I am home with my kids, we are out and about!

    Stay glamorous!

  17. I think some people will take any excuse to be lazy and that's where the sweatpants thing comes from. It's just as easy to throw on jeans or khakis and a tee shirt as it is to put on sweats. Before the baby was born, I saw one of "those" moms at the store and I promised myself I wouldn't allow myself to become a "dumpy" mom, if not for myself, then for Bubba. Isn't part of being a little kid getting to think that your mom is the most beautiful person in the whole world?

I'm glad everything seems to be going okay with Levi so far. You're so lucky to get to have your dh home for a whole month!

  18. Oh baby laundry is the best. My girls are now 3 and 1 and I STILL love doing their laundry. It's all so cute and precious.

That's awesome that husby is so hands-on. My husband is military and had to be back at work only 3 days after both of mine were born. It was a bit overwhelming to say the least. Especially when the second one came and I had a 2 year old and a newborn by myself. Ugh.

Thanks for sharing! Can't wait for more pics of your little baby boy!

  19. I miss the days of the cute baby boy laundry. Enjoy before you know it you will be scrubbing dirt out of everything. ;) (I have three boys ages 10, 7, and 3). Why can't you drive for 6 weeks? That seems ridiculous. I could drive after 2 with both my c-sections. (Although enjoy the chaffeur driving, it is fun). Levi is adorable. Kudos to you on getting ready every morning. I am much more productive if I am showered and dressed with my hair and make up done.

  21. I definetly agree with you on getting dressed and wearing make-up. I also accomplish so much more when I am ready for the day. I feel like I am ready for anything, just throw it on me I can handle it because I am clean, smell good and have my face on!! HA

  22. I had my baby on April 30th, and your life sounds pretty similar to mine :-) I am surprised you aren't allowed to drive for 6 weeks! I had a c-section and was fine to drive after 2.
