Berry Fun!

This weekend was just fabulous. Husby and I have had a crazy busy summer, and this was one of the few free weekends we have had. We just did crazy spur-of-the-moment things together and it was just so much fun.

Friday night was beautiful over our neck of the woods. We ate at our favorite local Chinese hole-in-the-wall restaurant and rented movies to watch at home. Check out the beautiful sky!

Saturday morning, I had a hankerin' for some country living. It is summer, so I am constantly in the mood to do "summery" things. One "summery" thing that I have always wanted to do but never have is berry picking! I searched out the best local berry farm on the World Wide Web, and we woke up bright and early Saturday morning on a quest for berries. We just threw on some clothes and some sunglasses and headed out to the farm. It was so much fun!

We pulled in to the farm and were greeted by such sweet country folk with stacks of buckets ready to be filled with berries. They told us blueberries were already picked for the season but there were blackberries-o-plenty. Boy were they right!

There was row after row of berry bushes. I felt like a child on an Easter egg hunt! I grabbed my bucket and started flying up and down the aisles searching for the best berries I could find. Then I stopped and realized it wasn't a race. So, I slowed down, strolled along and enjoyed the beautfiul morning.

Um...so....at first, I thought these red berries were raspberries and I started picking them. Then I realized that raspberries don't grow on the same bush as blackberries and that they were probably just blackberries that weren't yet ready to be picked. I was right. I was pretty embarassed, but hey - I was new to this!

Husby!! He's a cutie.

It was so peaceful and serene out there. I decided I want to be a berry farmer. Will you please come to my berry farm? I promise you will have a FABULOUS time. I will give you hot pink buckets with gold plated handles to pick your berries in. And I will let you keep it....for a souvenir of your great day at the farm. And I will give you iced tea and fresh scones to eat when you are finished. It will be so much fun. I promise.

There were also ducks! Oh, how I love country living. Maybe one day I will live somewhere with ducks and a pond...

And cows. Ummm, nah, I don't really love cows. They scare me. One chased me one time and I panicked. It was bad.

Beautiful berry bushel.

Hi! My name is Whitney and I have never been to a berry farm before. Don't these berries look delicious? They are. I know because right after this picture was taken, I popped them in my mouth! Don't worry, the farmer told me to eat as many as I want along the way, so I wasn't breaking any rules. And please ignore my hair. It had yet to be washed. And no makeup was on...hence the sunglasses. A redhead without mascara = terrifying.

See the size of these berries? What I DIDN'T know about berry pickin', is how black and blue your hands become. See my dirty hands? It was driving me ca-razy! I thought they were stained forever. They weren't. I tend to overreact a lot.

I was so proud of all the berries I found! It was a fantastic Saturday morning spent with the husby. And check out the pockets of my work out pants - they were stuffed full with a camera and cell phone. Funnnnny.

We capped off the morning by a visit to The Waffle House. It was perfect.

If you are a working girl like me and live for Saturdays so that you can catch up on sleep, don't waste those beautiful mornings sleeping in 'til eleven! Wake up at a reasonable hour and go do something fun with your husby and/or kiddos! Make fun memories! This is the only day of the week we can fully enjoy our mornings, doing fun, spontaneous and relaxing things, so take full advantage and live it up! :)

  4. Looks like you had a really fun time. I haven't been berry picking in about 27 years. I'll have to look into if there are any berry picking farms near me.

How many did you pick and what are you planning on doing with them?

  7. I LOVE blackberries, they are delicious. I used to pick them out at my great-grandmother's house in Harrah as a young one. But she just had a couple bushes, nothing too extravagant. I bet your cobbler turned out delicious!
