Phenomenons of the Night.

It's 12:30am, you sneak into your childrens' rooms to check on them and make sure they're still there and still breathing so you can put those morbid thoughts to rest.  When you realize they're okay, you stop to stare and whisper a prayer over them.  They look like perfect little cherubim, sleeping so beautifully and peacefully.  Someone should really capture this moment in a painting.

Fast forward three hours later, you are awoken from a deep sleep to see the SON OF CHUCKY staring deep into your soul, two inches from your face.  Why oh why must they stand there and stare?!

Your bed is your haven.  Your safe place.  Your ultimate spot to retreat, rest, recharge.

But sometimes you just can't get comfortable.

If you lay on your back, the sheets make your feet be pointed and it hurts.
If you lay on your stomach, you get a crick in your neck.
If you lay on your side, your usually chubby knees suddenly turn knobby and they knock together and hurt.

Then you wake up in the morning on your stomach, twisted at the hips with your legs turned up facing the ceiling.  With a blanket between your knees!  Why can't we find these perfect positions when we're awake?

***

Nighttime: "I should get up right now and clean out that closet, mop the floors, organize the pantry, and get all the laundry done.  I totally have the energy to do all of those things right this very second."

Morning: "Chores? What? NOOOO! I JUST WANT TO SLEEP!"

{Same story with getting up to work out.  Eh, I'd rather be "soft" and rested!}

***

Nighttime, laying in bed: "What if my kids get kidnapped, Husby has a wreck, my house catches on fire, I lose my legs, and everyone I know dies?"

Morning: None of those thoughts ever cross my mind.

***

Going to bed: "I am so cold!  I want to crank the electric blanket to 10, but I know that'll get too hot, so I'll put it on three.  That should be good.  Oh, that feels amazing.  So soothing, so comforting, so warm.... Zzzzz...."

And, at 3AM I'm waking up in a pool of sweat, heart racing, and throwing off covers like they're hot molten lava ... cursing the day I ever bought an electric blanket.

{Repeat every night of winter.}

Oh, nighttime.  You mysterious little thing, you.

  3. My daughter used to come stand next to the side of our bed. sometimes for longer than 5 minutes. When I would finally wake up (thinking there was some murderer standing over me), breathing heavy and heartbeat racing, she would say "I have to go to the bathroom." My response, "GO TO THE BATHROOM! You are killing me here!" Every single night for about 2 years. I really think she took years off my life.

  4. I think it is only women who do this. Men go to sleep quick and stay asleep while we lie awake and make up unsolvable problems!
