Security in Love.

You should see the look on Levi's face when his Daddy comes over to give me a kiss. He lowers his little head, raises his eyebrows and peeks up shyly with his sparkling blue eyes and the biggest smile plastered to his face. He often starts giggling and he looks at me, then his Daddy, and back at me again - smiling and beaming. Like he's proud.

When we're resting on the couches in the evenings, Husby often gets up and comes over to give me a hug. We always look over at Levi and he has stopped what he's doing to watch ... smiling, eyes sparkling, giggling, and then without fail, every time, he runs over to us, climbs on the couch and starts hugging and kissing us both.

He gives a smile unlike the others that he gives throughout the day. This smile is different. It's a smile of security.

I came from a family of love. My Dad loved my Mom. Mom loved my Dad. They displayed their love to each other each and every day. They made a special point to never argue in front of us. In fact, I can only remember one argument between the two of them in my entire life. I believed in my little mind, that they never disagreed. I'm sure they did, but they never discussed it in front of us kids. And I had such a sense of security in that. A security that I never even knew I had until I became an adult and was able to look back on my childhood and reflect.

I never wondered if they were going to divorce. I never doubted their sincerity. I knew my parents loved each other, because they showed us. They hugged and kissed each other every day and never hid that affection. They spoke to one another with love and enthusiasm. There is something so reassuring to a child to see their parents laugh together, hold hands and carry meaningful conversation. The world could have crumbled around me when I was a child, but as long as my family was together and safe - that's all that mattered.

Levi teaches me new things every day, but recently, every time he gives us that smile when his Daddy and I hug or kiss, I am blown away that at this young age, he recognizes that love and he so obviously delights in it! It absolutely proves the fact that children want to KNOW and SEE their parents love each other. Now, I know there will be a day when he's 15 and won't be so blatantly endeared by our affection, and that's totally normal. But I know that he'll still delight in it. And know that he's safe.

Last week, we sat next to an elderly couple in Church. The woman is suffering from Alzheimer's and the man so lovingly cares for her day in and day out. I observed as they sat down and she grabbed my Bible, thinking it was hers. He gently took the Bible from her and handed it back to me, whispering, "that's not your's, Honey." As the service went on and it was time to open our Bibles, she placed hers on her lap - open and upside down. The husband never said a word, just quietly turned it right side up for her and patted her knee. A little while later, out of the blue in the midst of the sermon, she turned to her husband and said, "I love Jesus." He whispered back, "yes, you do."

My eyes welled with tears as I witnessed this sincerest display of true love. I couldn't help but instantly be transported to our kitchen, Husby hugging and giving me a kiss as he gets home from work, and little Levi looking up and giggling. I'm sure she has memories exactly like these, but tragically, she can't access them. Though this woman is struggling every single day, her husband stays beside her guarding her, reminding her, protecting her .... loving her. I can only imagine their children, looking up at them through this difficult stage of life - smiling...beaming....and thankful for the security their love still brings.

Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. 1 John 3:18

  3. This was the very topic of our bible study last night, and oh how I love to be reminded and reassured! It's so wonderful Levi gets to see his parents in such a loving relationship. And the story about the woman in church brought tears to my eyes. Her husband has a sincere and genuine love for her. How wonderful!

  5. What an uplifting post, Whitney, thank you. In my home growing up, my parents showed little affection for one another, and always fought at night after they thought my sister and I had gone to sleep. What they didn't know was that we really DID hear; in fact, I would lay on the ground by my closed door with my ear pressed against crack at the bottom - and listen, and worry. I was so afraid they would get a divorce, and eventually they did (though thankfully it was when I was a little older so it wasn't terribly damaging). But my point is, I completely agree with you and VOW that my children will never have to fear the same way I did. You have such a beautiful little family and I hope that you and your husband will always cherish it - and each other - exactly the way you do now. Levi WILL notice!

  6. It sounds like your childhood household and current are very similar to the way mine was and is becoming (though we don't have a little one). This post moved me to tears -- thank you for sharing a little piece of you and the story of the church couple.

  10. *Wiping tears from eyes* That was a beautiful story of the older couple. And good for the two of you, being able to display your love in front of Levi. Kids really do need to see that their parents love each other.

  11. I just had to wipe a tear from my eye ... in the middle of class ... not that I am reading blogs in class as opposed to paying attention ... :)

Genuine, trusting love is the best thing ever!

  15. How beautiful!! My husband and I are the same way and because of it my sons are the same way with their girlfriends. In fact one day my husband said that the golf coach had mentioned my son didn't have a windbreaker on at golf practice. Turns out he had given his coat to his girlfriend to wear home, always the gentleman. I wouldn't have it any other way!!

love your blog!! Your little guy is adorable, enjoy everyday with him the years go by so quickly!!

  16. Just stumbled on your blog - cute! I love the story about the elderly couple in church. My gma passed of Alzheimer's, it's truly the most tragic thing, and it brings new meaning to being pro-life. When we have Christ living in us, scripture teaches that the Holy Spirit is always with us, imagine being completely lost and scared not knowing anyone or anything around you, but having the great comforter still there! :) Thanks for sharing!
