Husby Love: Day 1

In honor of my second favorite holiday, (you know the one that is just around the corner!) I am going to spend the rest of the week devoting my posts to none other than the love of my life.

Husby.

Today I am going to tell you a fun little story about The Perfect Boyfriend.

Husby was the best boyfriend in the world. He was the perfect mixture of romantic and fun. I am a sucker for romance, but I equally love spending the evening clutching my side from laughter, so this 50/50 mix that he had going on was exactly what I was looking for.

When planning a date, Husby didn't just pick a restaurant and browse the movie listings online. He planned. He was very into surprising me and giving me specific instructions on how to dress/what type shoes to wear/etc. so that I would be prepared for whatever he had up his sleeve.

He once took me on a hike up a mountain to have a picture perfect sunset picnic.
Another time he took me the ballet.
He took me 4 hours away to an all day multi-band outdoor concert.
He sought out the most unique restaurants that neither of us had experienced.
He took me on scavenger hunt dates.

And these are to name a few.

Needless to say, Husby was always the most creative date planner, and I never knew what he would come up with next. One particular date sticks out in my mind as one I will never forget.

Husby called and told me to wear jeans and a t-shirt, that he would take care of the rest. I didn't really understand what this meant, but I went with it. I threw on the cutest pair of jeans I had, a cute little tank top (it was the dead of summer) and some sparkly flip flops. When he came to pick me up, I opened the door and gasped.

There stood my 6'4" basketball player boyfriend in a western shirt and cowboy hat.

I burst into laughter and screamed, "what are you DOING?!"

He then pulled his hands from behind his back and handed ME a western pearl snap shirt, a cowboy hat and a plastic gun and holster.

"Put this on and let's go!" he said.

I was flabbergasted. I didn't know what on earth was going on. I threw on the cowboy gear and off we went. I pleaded and begged for him to tell me what was going on, but he wouldn't budge. I teased him by asking where my boots were. That was one thing he couldn't quite scrounge up for me.

Before I knew it, we were at a park.

"Get out!" he ordered.

I hopped out and turned in a circle - what on earth were we doing at a park?

I caught Husby out of the corner of my eye getting something out of the backseat. I walked over to a swing and he came up behind me and said, "Come over here, babe, we're playing horse shoes."

I (again) burst into laughter. I'd never played horse shoes a day in my life!

We played a few rounds and I lost. I laughed, and laughed and laughed. What on earth were we doing in cowboy garb in a park playing horse shoes? As soon as I caught my breath, he ushered me back to the car and on to our next stop.

We headed to the big City and Husby drove straight to a little BBQ joint.

"Come on, babe, let's eat!" he said.

"Waaaaait a minute. Hold up," I said. "I'm not going in there dressed like this!" (Remember we had plastic guns and holsters on our hip.)

"Well, that's too bad! You're going!" he replied.

He basically dragged me into the place and I was laughing so hard I was nearly crying. The waitresses looked at us like we had just been released from the loony bin, but we tried our best to ignore their stares and eat our food.

After a hearty chopped beef sandwich and some potato salad, it was on to our final destination. I tried sneaking off my gun and holster, but Husby caught me and ordered it back on. He was a stickler when it came to that gun on my hip.

He drove down the back roads on the outskirts of town and I had absolutely no idea where we were headed. Husby just steered and smiled, not saying a word.

A half hour later we arrived to an outdoor theatre that was performing none other than the play "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers". I was SO excited!! I love things like this. I hurriedly ran to the entrance gate, not even remembering my pearl snaps and my hat. I was just thilled to be there! When we took our seats, I realized that we were getting a few stares.

Wait. Not a few stares.

A TON of stares.

I buried my face in Husby's shoulder and gushed of my humiliation. It was then and there that I shed my cowboy hat and gun and reapplied some lipstick as I pulled my hair in a pony tail. I was done BEING a cowboy, I was there to watch some!

We had the best time watching the play and laughing at the previous events of the day. We drove home in the late hours of the night, hand in hand. He looked over at me and stared for a few seconds and he looked like he wanted to say something, but didn't. He just smiled. I smiled back and squeezed his hand. It was the best date I'd ever been on up to that point and there was no one else on earth I would have done that with.

A few years later Husby and I were discussing different things over the course of our relationship and I asked him "when did you fall in love with me? Was there a specific time that you just knew?"

He replied "you remember our cowboy date? Well that night, on our way home, I remember looking over at you and at that instant, KNOWING that I had fallen in love with you. It was the craziest thing - it just kind of HIT me. I wanted so bad to tell you, but I knew it was too early. I knew that day that there was no one out there like you, and when I looked over at you, I knew that you were the one."

As great as that cowboy date was because of the funny memories, it holds even more special meaning to me now. It represents our relationship in the best way. We've always been the best of friends. We have such FUN together and the friendship that we established first led to a beautiful love. One that overwhelms me every time I look in his eyes.

Thank you, Husby. You were (and still are) The Perfect Boyfriend. I love you.
