The Great DVD Debate.

Baby Einstein Vs. Praise Baby

Let me just start by saying that I, personally, am not a fan of sitting the baby in front of the television and letting him watch it for an hour. I don't think it's healthy and there are plenty of other things I would rather encourage than TV. I limit Levi's "TV Time" to once or twice a week. He can watch one 30 minute DVD and then it's off with the Boob Tube and on to books or blocks or whatever else.

Levi has an array of Baby Einstein DVD's and when you pop one in, he is transfixed on it. You can walk in front of him, say his name or clang some pots together and he will NOT look away. He l-o-v-e-s these videos! It is the funniest thing. I do have to say, that these videos are life savers when I have to get something done in a certain amount of time. But I never want these things to become a "babysitter".

For Christmas, Levi's Grammy bought him a Praise Baby DVD. It is the same concept as Baby Einstein, but instead of classical tunes and weird poems, it is praise songs sang by an adult woman with a beautiful voice and children in the background.

It is the sweetest thing.

The first time that we popped this DVD in, Levi went into a Praise Baby Coma. I'm not positive, but I don't think he blinked for 30 minutes straight. I sat down and watched a few minutes of the video and I was so, so impressed!

Not only did it have nice visuals for Levi, but the music that filled our house was glorifying God!

Not only did it put Levi in a fantastic mood, but it put me in one as well!

Without really realizing it, I discovered that every time I played Praise Baby, my house had a different feel to it. The air felt lighter and the rooms seemed brighter. I'm not even kidding! I have discovered through Praise Baby how important it is to fill our home with music (not just our prayers and Bible stories) that sings the praises of our Creator.

My precious son is a little sponge at this age, and I want to help instill God's Truths in his little mind and heart so that he will never remember a time without knowing God's word.

They have Praise Baby CD's, and I plan on snagging some and playing them every morning for me and Levi to listen to as we play.

There is something just so heart warming about watching your child soak up songs of praise to Him.

  1. That is really sweet. :)

I have really great memories of listening to The Donut Man--check out that for him! I still pop in my old Donut Man Christmas cassette every December. They're tapes of kids and The Donut Man singing, and then there are memory verses and such included.

And when he gets a little bit older, I used to LOVE listening to Adventures in Odyssey--you might already know about it, but it's a Christian radio drama for kids. I absolutely loved it.

  4. Love Praise Baby, love Baby Einstein! Is it possible to love them both? We don't watch them anymore (Cub isn't interested so much anymore) but I loved having either classical music or praise music fill the house. Anything is better than what is inevitably yet to come, like cartoons and such (and Elmo, ohhhhhh Elmo).

I keep music going all day and I have to say that Cub has become quite a fan of Needtobreathe. :) It's amazing how much music (especially worship) can make the house feel more like a home. Love it!

  5. I LOVE PraiseBaby. We used to watch it every morning while I was eating breakfast and it was such a great way to start the day. My favorites are the orange and green ones, but all of them are good. Thanks for the reminder, I think I will start playing that music for the new baby to listen to while in utero. I like PraiseBaby so much that when I hear the original songs on the radio I don't think they sound as good as that beautiful voice on PB!

By the way, Mardel marks them down quite often around Christmas and their 25% off kids' sale if you don't have all of them yet!

  6. I haven't heard of Praise Baby before, but it sounds like I need to look into them!

My sister is a preschool teacher at a Christian day school and she sent me a bunch of children's praise CDs for Beanie. We listen to them when we're driving around and I love them. You are absolutely right, too. Praise really does make everything seem brighter! :)

  8. Never heard of Praise Baby, but it sounds like something I'd like to have for the house! Where did Levi's lovely Grammy find it? Mardel?

  9. I LOVE PRAISE BABY! We just discovered it about six months ago and I think it is wonderful. I too think it sets a different tone for the house. And RJ is transfixed on it too and she is almost two! YAY for Praise Baby!

  13. When I was little I listened to Psalty - do you remember him? Psalty the singing song-book?! ANd Charity Churchmouse. Oh goodness, the memories. (o:

I've heard Great things about both Praise Baby and Baby Einstein and need to get on that. And i'm with you, I don't want TOmmy watching a lot of TV either.

  14. I stopped using Baby Einstein a while back...If I have the t.v. on, it's usually fixed on food network, I'm a junkie and Alex doesn't pay attention to t.v. - even cartoons. So, I'd like to keep that up if we can, haha! I'm not really into music either, so we don't have music going except in the car. My house is pretty quiet - he's probably more used to the laundry going, the dishwasher, vacuum... This morning he helped me put the washer load into the dryer - it was the CUTEST! But his toys compensate maybe...they sing to him and are loud and so am I, haha!!!

  15. We're huge Praise Baby fans...even my almost-three-year-old loves the DVDs! But honestly, the CDs are even more wonderful. They're longer selections of music, and I love that they're mellow enough for morning and evening time. (Sometimes children's music can be a little overpowering!)

When you do have a slightly older little love, I'd also HIGHLY recommend Miss Patty Cake. She sings wonderful (original) songs chock full of gospel truth, and she's simply delightful.

  18. Whitney, I have been following your blog for a while, and I love it !! You are a wonderful mother...I just need to say something about your DVD debate because I wish I had known. I am 45 and have two children one age 12 and one age 8. When my 12 year old was a baby we didn't have the money to invest in all the DVD's. She played a lot on the floor with her toys, at the park, etc. When number 2 came along Baby Einstein had just come out. It was so cute and when I put the dvd's in for him to watch he was just captivated, it was amazing. If he was fussy and I couldn't calm him down, I could sit him in front of the DVD and he would calm down immediately. I thought I was being a good mother and building pathways in his brain by exposing him to these video. Please know that I never used it as a babysitter. But he maybe watched them a few times a week. Ok...fast forward 8 years and he is now in the 2nd grade and has a hard time staying focused in class. He is super bright, but always needs to be reminded to stay on task. I was at a Seminar on the Brain recently and their biggest emphasis was that children under the age of two should never be placed in front of a tv for any reason. It over stimulates their brains and my cause add or adhd later in life. Huh, I have often wondered if that is my sons issues. I mean, I know it could be a number of things, but you never know. Then just recently there was a recall by Disney on all the Baby Einstein videos, because they now how proof that children who watched them who are now going into the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade are struggling with ADD. I know you must get this all the time, but I just wanted to let you know in case you hadn't heard about the studies. You are an amazing Mom and Wife, I love your stories and look forward to reading more in the future. Blessings to you. Elizabeth McDonald

  20. I (Grammy) got the Praise Baby DVD at Family Christian Store. If I had known they would be such a hit with both grandsons, I would have bought TONS more!!! As you know, Whit, our house was always filled with music and Christian music at that. Psalty Sing-A-Long-A-Thon, Veggie Tales, Steve Green's Hide 'Em In Your Heart, and whatever mom and dad wanted to hear. I loved hearing my kids sing songs about Jesus, and still do to this day (hint, hint). So thankful Levi & Des are loving hearing songs about Him!!!!

  21. I LOVE the Praise Baby DVDs. Hannah's foster sister-in-law sent her home with two. She has loved music from day one, and she was, and still is, enthralled with them. As a matter of fact, all three of my kids love to listen/watch them (ages 5, 9, 10). We have a 30 minute drive to church, and most Sunday mornings, we will pop one in the dvd in the van, and it starts getting us in the proper spirit to worship once we get to church. One of Hannah's first words was "Hallelujah" from watching the "God of Wonders" dvd.

  22. I will keep this in mind for baby shower presents!
    Thanks!

  23. We loved Praise Baby and Baby Einstein too.

The next step will be the Hide 'Em In Your Heart DVD's by Steve Green. They are all scripture verses made into songs with videos to go along with them. My kids loved them and we memorized a lot of scripture through them. The only down side is that they were made in the 90s and it shows. The kids don't notice, but you will. You will get a kick out of it at times because they are dated. But really great, nonetheless.

  24. I have not heard of those. Thanks for sharing.

  25. Kelly ... I (Grammy) gave Levi Steve Green's Hide 'Em In Your Heart CDs for a shower gift, before he was born. Ahead of the game; huh?

  26. Praise music is the number one way to bring joy and peace into your home (and life!). I can't believe it took me so long to figure it out but once I did, I stopped listening to secular music completely! I really do think Satan hates praise music more than anything.
