Heart Attack

So. I almost had a heart attack this week. I was eating a kid’s meal at a local fast food joint and was curious about how many calories I was consuming.

I went back to my office and googled it.

And then I fell over and had a heart attack right then and there. It was a KIDS meal for crying out loud! I thought I was doing GOOD by eating it. Little did I know, I was clogging arteries with each swallow!

After that little tid bit of horrid information that I stumbled upon, it became a game to me. I googled each fast food place that Husby and I eat at on a somewhat frequent basis, and I totaled my calories and fat grams from each meal that I usually get at that particular place.

Made. Me. Want. To. Throw. Up.

Arby’s
Regular Roast Beef – 320 cal 14 fat grams
Medium Curly Fries – 496 cal 29 fat grams
TOTAL – 816 calories 43 fat grams

Taco Bueno
Mexi Dips & Chips – 972 cal 62 fat grams

(WHAT!?! IT’S CHIPS AND DIPS!!! THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS! I do not eat the bean dip portion of this meal (yuck), so hopefully that cuts out on some calories. But still, that is unreal. I am surprised I am still alive.)

(And I don't even have a muchaco with it!)

MCDonalds
Premium Grilled Chicken Sandwich – 420 cals 10 fat grams
Medium Fries – 380 cal 18 fat grams
TOTAL – 800 calories 28 fat grams

(And that’s a grilled sandwich! Isn’t that supposed to be healthy? Oh gosh.)

Chic Fil A
Classic Sandwich – 430 cal 17 fat grams
Coleslaw – 600 cal 51 fat grams
TOTAL – 1030 cal 68 fat grams

(Okay…so I thought I was doing good by getting coleslaw instead of fries! The fries have 430 calories and the teeny tiny container of coleslaw – 600! Incredible.)

I’ve never been SO HAPPY in all my life that I only drink Diet Coke or Unsweet Tea! Just think of all the extra calories I’d be consuming with real Coke or a sweet tea! Yucka!

I have recently discovered the wonderment of the fresco menu at Taco Bell. It has fresh pico all over the items instead of cheese and sauces. It is really good and the calorie content is considerably lower.

But, I think I’ll stick with my 6” turkey breast filled with veggies at Subway. You can’t beat 280 calories and 4 grams of fat! YUMMY!

Delicious and Nutritious! :)

Dare to look up your favorite fast food items? Or is ignorance bliss?

  1. oh no! I LOVE Taco Bueno. Mmm mmm. Now I too will feel guilty every time I eat there... Way to go Subway though, for offering healthy, low-fat alternatives.

  2. I know. It's shocking, isn't it? For quite a while now, when I sign out of my email I get a screen with advertising links to this website - http://www.menshealth.com/eatthis/the-worst/

I LOVE looking up the crazy amounts of calories in foods and how things that are the same food can be so different depending on where you buy them from.

Luckily, most of the 'worst' things I'd never dream of eating, but sometimes I've thought "Oh wow. I've actually eaten that". Scary!!

  3. I'm thinking ignorance is bliss.
We don't eat out that often so I'm hoping that justifies all those calories.
Sad that Taco Bueno is so bad I to love there Mexi chips and dip and I drink DP with it.
sad sad I want one now!

  4. Oh my - that is crazy! Luckily I don't eat fast food very often.

Funny you should post about this because the other day at work there was something on a local website about how many calories really are in the foods we eat. It listed a salad, yes a salad, from I think Ruby Tuesday, that had over 2000 calories - now that is just wrong!

  5. Yuck is right! Ew. But now I'm hungry. And craving Mexi dips. At 6am. Oh why can't there be Taco Bueno in Alabama??

  6. My partner and I have just recently started paying attention to what we've been eating and trying to watch our diet. Let me tell you, it has SIGNIFICANTLY changed since reading nutrition labels and looking it up for fast food places online. The best solution? NO FAST FOOD. Literally. It sucks! But you feel a million times better, at least I've noticed a difference in my energy levels and such. But alternatively, moderation is key if you still need it from time to time. We've obviously been eating it often for so long, so we know a time or two won't hurt. Right? Hm, I hope so!

  7. Some of those are unbelievable. A grilled chicken sandwhich has a lot more calories than I would have thought. I love Subway's turkey subs. They have been one of my best friends since joining WW.

  8. It's sick when you really start to think about it....ugh!

    ReplyDelete
  9. yeah those numbers are scary and exactly why I hardly ever eat at those places. it's bad! :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. ohhhh i know all about this. when i got my iPhone i downloaded the free "restaurants" feature and it lists a bunch of popular restaurants. that way, when we choose to go eat out, i can pull it up and know ahead of time how many calories i am about to consume...or what NOT to get!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I love Chick-fil-a, but we live in the North, and only eat it when we are far from home. Now I am glad! Holy cow!
    I will stick with Subway!

    ReplyDelete
  12. That makes me want to vomit, too! I used to know exactly how many calories I consumed every single day. For some reason, I've fallen off the calorie counting wagon. I think it's time to step right back on, though. Thanks for the reminder of my nasty ways!

  13. Wow!! The cole slaw from Chik Fil A was a shock to me, not that I ever get it. That really makes me think twice about eating out! The only places we really go are Chik Fil A, Jason's Deli (yummy!), and Subway. I guess the media is right on this one!

  14. OH god....I think I'm going to have a heart attack...

    ReplyDelete
  15. WOW!!! I feel the same about my diet coke now too...it is the saving grace in my fast food venture. Oh wait, sometimes I'm behind the person ordering what appears to be enough to feed a small army, but you know it's all for that one person, and then of course they always top it off with a diet coke! Is that what I look like now...lol:)

  16. I've been doing WW, so I definitely spent a few days looking up nutritional stuff and calculating points for my favorite foods. How freaking sad was I when I found out that the Starbucks salted caramel hot chocolate (my new FAVE) was almost HALF of my daily points???? Yeah. Ew.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, fast food facts are scary. That's why it's best just to not eat it at all. Though that usually doesn't stop me. Arby's is one of my favorites too! )o:

    ReplyDelete
  18. uhm, yeah, i did this too. and that's why i have avoided fast food recently!!!! mcdonalds scared the pants off me! yikes! i eat subway all. the. time. i love it. and even if i DO get a spicy italian or something, the calorie/fat content is still way lower than other places. do you like panera bread? do they have that by you? also whole foods and trader joe's are AWE to the SOME. love me some trader joe's.

yay that you 'woke up' to the facts of fast food! eat some veggies. :) they're good with ranch! o wait. ranch is bad too, isn't it? darn it.

  19. Oh my goodness. I knew most of those stats but not the mexi dip and chips... wowowozer... I usually get the roast beef sandy and baked layes... makes it a bit healthier!!I might do a belly pic for you today:)

  20. That's crazy! I've always thought that a kids meal would be a better option too, guess not.

  21. There is a great book called, "Eat This, Not That". They give great substitutions whether it be brands or menu items. It also makes you realize that there are a lot of things that you think are good for you aren't as good as you think. There are three different editions- Supermarket Survival Guide, The Original, and The Kids version. The kids version is great for checking out what type juice boxes are best, what snacks are better, etc. Highly recommend it!

  22. Wow.. My 10 piece nugget combo from wendy's is 890 calories!! Whew. Luckily I do not eat there all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sister, I can't believe you put the calorie/fat facts on Chick Fila. You know that is my favorite fast food joint!! I chose to just look past them and not read the facts. I choose blifful ignorance! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ignorance is bliss I think. :) But you're right, fast food is horrible, that's why the United States is so fat. My favorite thing in the world is Chipolte burritos, which has... gasp... 1200 calories.

    Oh well...

I should tell you though you should look up the articles about Diet Coke and aspartame, and you'll drop that diet soda like it was a hot potato. :) sorry, but its bad stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Now you're just teasing me.

We don't have Taco Bueno or Chick-Fil-A here but I used to eat there all the time when I lived in the south. Sad...I miss them. I'd gladly consume that many calories if I could have just one meal from each place!

    ReplyDelete
  26. OH MY!!! I love the fresca menu at Taco Bell, which is kinda weird for me because it has onions in it.
But it has a good flavor. Coleslaw?? Ew, gross!
It definitely makes you think about what you will be feeding your kiddos, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ignorance is BLISS! That's why when I make a dessert I don't like to eat it, because I know how many sticks of butter and how many cups of sugar went into it. But if someone else makes it, that's a different story ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. It'a unreal how many calories are in foods we eat. I try to eat everything in moderation so it balances out.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ignorance can be bliss...as long as you're not ingnorant too often!

    ReplyDelete
  30. The chicken sandwich at McDonalds is fine - check your numbers again. It's the FRIES that are the problem.

If you get the sandwich with no mayo, and swap Apple Dippers for the fries, this is actually a respectable meal.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I do this all the time if I am unsure; most fast food and restaurants have the nutrional information on their website...shocking isn't it!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yikes! Subway is definitely the way to go.

Thanks for stopping by my blog too! I am 25 weeks pregnant, and due June 7th. We are having a boy too! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. UMMM!! I just ate that at Arby's yesterday. My bad!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. When my Mom was pregnant with me she craved those Arbys Sandwiches like no other -- no wonder she gained so much!

  35. girl, I am in your boat! It stinks so many places are so BAD! I drive around all day so I have lots of temptation. Thank goodness places are giving more healthy options!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. We try to always eat at Subway now after I discovered the same as you...unreal numbers of calories, even in the kids' food! I think the Subway roast beef sub has even fewer calories than the turkey, if you're interested.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow. This made me not hungry at all! And, it's almost lunch time!

  39. What a terrible thing for you to post for pregnant women to see!!! My diet consists of most of that stuff right now! My poor baby! He's going to be born with heart disease!

    Gotta go find some carrots...

  40. Ignorance is bliss! I was eating a salad at Red Robbin thinking I was all healthy and googled the calories and was stunned that it had 1000 cals and 87 grams of fat!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wow, some of those totals are surprising! Yeesh!

  42. Who wouls have thought . I wonder ???????? don't they even care . My DH love's all that stuff and I love Subway , I even make my own , Lots of vegetables on it YUM .

  43. Yeah, I RARELY get chicken or fish from fast food places - & the more 'healthy' something looks, I'm less likely to order it. I have one of those calorie fast food booklets - Don't EVER get the market fresh sandwich from Arby's - You might die on the spot from calorie intake. I usually get the main normal - #1...But now, we don't eat out as much. It'll probably slow down once you have the baby. Unless you don't have time or energy to cook. I have a neighbor (our age) that didn't cook much after she had her baby. Ate out almost every meal. Just the opposite for us :-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. My coworkers and I were just talking about this. Isn't it crazy how many calories fast food has in it-even the kids' meals.

    ReplyDelete
  45. ok, you just grossed me out! I'd rather not know those details!

    ReplyDelete
  46. No bueno, Taco Bueno, no bueno. That being said, you have a huge fan in me! ...unless you keep posting all of this nutritional info. Then we're going to have to end this one-sided cyber crush :)

  47. When I was pregnant for my first son I was gaining weight very quickly. I ate fast food everyday for lunch because I worked then and I had to eat something quick. My doctor recommended that I try eating Subway instead. I started eating Subway almost everyday for lunch and now almost 5 years later I won't eat there. I ended up gaining 35 lbs which is alot on a body when you started at 105 lbs before pregnancy. I can't imagine how much I would have gained had I not cut back on all the high calorie fast food.

    ReplyDelete
  48. now, i'm officially hungry...thanks

    ReplyDelete
  49. It is so sad how many calories are in things. The even sader thing is that all meals are made to feed two so you get a lot for your money. The sad thing is that what was meant for two we eat for one :(

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ruby Tuesday and Panera shock me the most. The salads at Ruby's are ridiculous. But Panera really hides the fat and calories.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh dear Lord. The Arby's one hit close to home... I get that every time I go there! AHHHH, my arteries!

    ReplyDelete
  52. When I started counting my daily calorie intake I had to look up alot of the food I ate....and like you I was shocked at what I was consuming.

Even salads can get up to 700 or 800 calories depending on the toppings and dressing!!!!

  53. From the perspective of this great vitamin supplement control it would be a smart thought to devour more foods grown from the ground and in especially oranges. Niacin rich foods

  54. Why ask how to cure a heart attack? It will end with the death of a part of the heart muscle - or it will end with the death of the entire muscle. Every heart attack ends one way or the other, doesn't it?How to see Aura?
