Concerned

The other day, I voiced a very legitimate concern to some people in my office and I was stunned by the response I received.

I told them that I hoped I didn’t go into labor in the middle of the night, because I won’t have time to do my hair and put on my makeup.

Immediately, a burst of laughter came from them and they said in unison, “WHITNEY! That is the last thing that you’ll be thinking of!”

Um. No, it isn’t.

Doesn’t everyone think of these things??

This is the day that people come, pictures are taken and most importantly - the first time Levi will see his Mommy’s face! I want to look pretty!

Plus, it's basically the biggest day of my life! It's kind of like not wearing makeup to your wedding. Just unthinkable! Right? Right??? (Or am I out of my mind?)

One girl in my whole office agreed with me and looked at everyone else as if they had 8 heads. I think she was as shocked as I was with their response. I literally had no idea that not everyone worried about this.

She assured me that she too, will be putting on makeup and fixing her hair when her time comes. And she reminded me to bring the makeup with me because I will more than likely be sitting in my hospital bed for a long time. It is so nice to work with someone who understands me. I don’t know what I would do without her! Thank you LINDSEY. (Her name is a link to her blog, but I can't figure out how to make it a different color.)

I'm the type of person who feels undone if I go anywhere without a shower, hair presentable and at LEAST mascara and lipstick on. So I think about these things. And I'd rather not feel undone as I am bringing a little life into the world. I'd like to feel as confident as I possibly can at that very terrifying and vulnerable time. 'Cause I think I'm gonna need a big ole boost of confidence before I go in to do my "thang". Yikearama.

Is/Was this a concern for you?

  1. I know that someday I will have the same concern. It's been instilled in me not to leave the house without make up...

it's just the way life is... right?

:) regardless it will be your day to meet your new little one! You'll have the most beautiful glow!

    :)

  2. I think it might be a little nutty but you don't know that yet - you'll only know that once you go in to labor. And, quite honestly, depending on the length of your labor you might just sweat all that pretty makeup right off your face and be left with a streaky mess :)

The only thing I'll care about is if I can put my hair up for pictures afterward. But, I don't think I'll care if I have makeup on in the hospital or not. I love the pictures of new moms holding their babies right after birth and they are glowing naturally - they don't need makeup.

Whatever happens I'm sure you'll be okay with at the end! :) And I"m sure you look beautiful without your makeup!

  3. I put SO much eyeliner on that day (I had a scheduled c-section though, so I could prepare better) - & everyone told me I wouldn't care what I wore & not to bring make-up and such - They were SO wrong - I wanted to feel pretty too and I'm pretty much a tom boy, so YOU need to DEFINITELY have things ready that are cute comfy - I'll admit though that now- sleep is more important, but that'll soon change once his sleeping patterns are better established.
And one more thing - I was one of those people that would have thought "Oh Whitney!" until I had to spend a few days in the hospital looking like a mac truck ran me down :-)

  4. Hi there, long time reader, first time commenter.

Yep, lot's of us think about it! But I was a lucky duck. We found out (11 days after my daughter's due date) that I would have to have a C-Section (she was breach). So, I got up early, partly because I couldn't sleep, and straightened my frizzy hair, put makeup on and felt great! I was sure swollen, but at least I was presentable. ;-)

Though, I don't really think it matters. If you go into labor unprepared, just bring the stuff with you....or not.....you'll feel like a million buck no matter what!

  5. I didn't do my hair or put on make up with the delivery of my first. . . and I regret it. I'd been awake and in major pain since 4am, so I didn't have my contacts in either. I can't stand to see those pictures now!! I don't care how much pain I'm in or what hour this second baby comes, I'm doing my hair, putting in my contacts and dabbing on some makeup!!

So I think you're totally right! I'll probably make me a cute hospital gown too instead of having to wear a drab uncomfortable one!

  6. LOL This is hysterical and yes I WAS worried and then I had my first child, complicated birth and realized it was more like a triathalon than a wedding day. Hugs and good luck!!! You can photoshop some make up ;) No worries :)

  7. oh my goodness, i just found your blog through saskia and love it already. i sometimes see pictures of people with their newborns and think a) you should have applied makeup and used a few bobby pins for those loose hairs or b) you should have waited on the photo until you accomplished part a. glad to see that mentality doesn't change when you get pregnant!

  8. I don't know how I stumbled upon your blog, but it's so cute and reminds me of my newlywed days...good luck to you as you welcome your lovie...and while you're worrying about your hair and makeup, don't forget to book a pedicure so your toes will be pretty in the stirrups.
    Good luck!

  9. You won't need your make-up! You'll have that natural glow of mother-hood! You'll be beautiful without your make-up!
I too, used to never leave my house without make-up. My cousin once said to me, "What do you do, sleep in the stuff?" Because he had never seen me without my make-up.
Now I rarely wear it, my husband actually prefers it that way.
This is my first visit to your blog, I can't wait to see your next post.

  10. Ummmm... I can see why people think your crazy.
BUT my water broke at 5 in the AM and I took a shower, I attempted to fix my hair and did throw on some mascara but the pain got too bad before I could finish and we were on our way.
Your friend is right, bring it with you if it is very important to you.
But maybe you should scroll through my delivery pictures. I was looking all kinds of nasty, but it didn't matter. Drew had to put my hair up and pen it back during the delivery (and he did a great job ;) )

  11. Whitney I was taking a bath and shaving my legs while I was in labor with my son. And yes my hair was fixed and my make-up was on. You'll have time.

  12. First births are typically longer than subsequent ones, so you will most likely have time. But yes bring makeup to the hospital as youll be in for a while probably.
Also I hate to break it to you, but I will as no one really ever does to first time mums.
You will find that Black and White pics are your best friend.
After all that sweating, shouting and pushing, you will be sweaty, red in the face and happy as a lark, and B&W are much more new mummy friendly.
Also make sure your labour partner plays interference with visitors. On your terms, and in my case once I felt presentable.
Ive done it twice, and these are my top tips.

  13. TWICE...I washed my hair and put on makeup. One baby was a long drawn out affair but let me assure you, before the first photos were taken I had my face on. The second one was a scheduled C section and my make up still looked good by the time we started the picture taking. No way was I going to look like a hag in the first pictures with my precious babies!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't think you're crazy AT ALL! I don't care if I'm going to see the doctor for the flu, I want to look nice ;)

Plus, you're going to have a million eyes on you that day! And the pictures! Oh, my word the pictures!

But seriously, I think you'll be so excited and so in love with your new little guy that you will care less.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I was the same way. I had to make sure that my toenails were painted too. I want to look good for every event in my life, and this was the most important one, so why wouldn't I at least make an effort :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have to smile, because I felt the same way...until I went into labor. I tried, I really did, to be pretty for that moment. Each time I tried. To be honest though, any makeup I thought would be left on after that whole thing (and I had easy labors!!) was long gone. I would put makeup on afterwards though.

It may be different if you are going to use pain control, I think the best I ever looked was when I had my c sec for the last kid. But in that instance I was so doped up I didn't care what I looked like.

No matter what, little Levi will definitely think you are the most gorgeous thing in the world. And trust me, you won't be thinking about makeup at that point. You probably won't even notice the camera... Something very precious will have your full attention. Moreso that even looking at your husband as you walked down the aisle. There is just nothing like it, the moments completely absorb you! *smile*

    ReplyDelete
  17. I had a scheduled induction with my first and I'm now pregnant with my second. I had to have an emergency c-section, so I didn't worry too much about my appearance during those final moments before they put me to sleep. Although, I adjusted the elastic on my little cap so that I wouldn't have some huge crease at my hairline. That morning I made sure to put on minimal make-up in case I go sweaty and skip the mascara for if I cried. When I plan for this second delivery, I include how my make-up and hair will be.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I always hated when people wrote "just wait" any time time I made an assumption about pregnancy, but ... just wait. I went into labor at 3:00 in the morning and was in so much pain I'm lucky I made it out the door with my hair in a ponytail. I thought that surely I would have time to put on make-up once I got my epidural, but all I wanted to do was sleep. Then, finally, I put on some mascara .... and pushed for the 3 hours and it all got sweated (or smeared) off. Sure enough, my right-after-the-baby-was-born picture is TERRIBLE. Everyone else says I look good, but I don't. They are lying. Now, if you have a planned c-section or an easy labor, you might be fine! But seriously, if you look like crap, know that it's because you took one for the team. Labor and delivery isn't supposed to be graceful or easy, thanks to Eve!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree that you'll want to at least have your make-up with you and want to put it on, so that when you take pictures you'll feel comfortable. I know that's how I'll feel.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I did "think" about it, but once my labor pains started.....I completely forgot about makeup. And during and after having my enema with labor pains, it never even crossed my mind.

    *Sigh*

I probably scared my baby when he first laid eyes on me. LOL!:) I also had to end up having an emergency C-section,so I had no makeup, a hair net, and I was swollen like a blowfish. LOL!:)

    *Sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  21. My, how different we truly are. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think that that would be a concern for me too! The other concern that I will have is whether my legs are freshly shaven. I don't know, the thought of going into labor and having your hairy legs in stirrups just mortifies me.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't wear makeup so that was not an issue for me. However before I went to have my children I showered and fixed my hair. I always looked and felt refreshed. Having a baby is so much work and I actually had c-sections which were still exhausting. The day before I had my son who is now 6 months old I spent a good hour trying to reach my toes so I could paint my toenails for the 4th of July. I delivered Eli on June 30 and wanted my toenails pretty. I also went and had my nails done. I don't regret it one bit. I felt put together and I really enjoyed the day.

I am sure you will be beautiful no matter what and when they are born it is the last thing on your mind but you will be glad you did when you see all the pictures. I know I was!

I love keeping up with you and can't wait to see pictures of the baby!

    Have a great day
    Sarah

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am with you 100% on this one. There will be alot of pictures and you will want to look good. Oh, and be sure to wear waterproof mascara! I know you will look beautiful though, so don't worry about it too much.

    ReplyDelete
  25. HAHA you are so cute!

I have not had a baby yet but I would hope that I would have my hair done and look half decent when going into labor. I love when I see the first pic of baby and mommy and the mom looks amazing. Like you would never know she just pushed out a 8 lb human being! I always think - now that women is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I applaud the fact that you want to look pretty for the big day! However, you likely will have plenty of time for that shower, etc. while you're in the early stages of labor (I always did).

    ReplyDelete
  27. I had a scheduled induction (it's a whole other story) and checked into the hospital at 8pm the night before, didn't get much sleep and then was woke up at 5am to shower and get everything started. I didn't even think about make-up or hair...I just put in a headband and went to work! I don't look great in my "after" shots but I was a mom and I worked hard for it, so I don't regret it at all. just do what you need to do.

    ReplyDelete
  28. My mom always told me that you want to look as perfect as possible the first time the baby sees you.

She delivered 5 kids, and in all of her pictures her hair is done, make up perfect, and she went to the hospital in cute little dresses.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I probably wouldn't have told people at my work that comment, because I think it would open the door to unnecessary jabs.

I am 15 weeks now, and I am so sick in the morning that the smell of my makeup makes me gag. I am a teacher, so I apply my makeup during 2nd hour. But yesterday I was so sick that I didn't wear any all day... and nothing terrible happened. I can't believe it still.

I want my hair, makeup, and toenails to look great. I also am aware that I should be more focused on the health of the baby. Since I have a high risk preg. part of me says "shame on you! care about the health of the baby not your outward appearance! that's selfish!". But realistically, I want good pictures to document, no matter what happens in the birth. I don't want to look back and think, gee, a little floss, mascara, and straightening iron would have been nice!

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is obviously a hot topic, and I can understand both sides, but when I finally have a baby, I think I'll just let the natural glow of motherhood do the talking and not worry about hair and make up. But I'm one of those people who tends to look bad in pictures even when I'm all done up, so the whole labor-baby thing might be irrelevant. :) Your blog remains great and even though I'm not at the pregnancy era yet, it's awesome to see (and be entertained by) your baby journey!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have been reading your blog for a while but I think this is the first time I am commenting. I was dressed and made up when I went in to labor and looked like BUTT when I came out. So just be prepared for that...just in case!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I never thought about it before; but your right about the pictures. I had 2 c sections and felt awful afterward due to me getting nausea from the epideral (I have this affect to anethesia) so I didn't want visitors afterward expect my baby and my hubby til later but I didn't have makeup with me; if I did I may have put it on.

    ReplyDelete
  33. well, i've never really thought about that...i think i'll have to play it by ear. i think i will be so focused on getting that baby OUT i don't know i'll even care about anything else! but i might plan ahead of time to have my sister near by with a make up bag :)

    ps...i posted a GIVEAWAY!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I was induced so I had time but I totally did my hair, put on makeup and brought more with me to the hospital. I also brought my own cute pajamas to put on each day and had a manicure/pedicure right before the big day. Lots of people are visiting and you gotta feel pretty even though what are you about do isn't so pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I never thought about it, but I think you are sooo right! When the time comes I want make-up on for all the pictures, family coming, and to meet my little one. Even if it means Garth has to put it on I will have make-up on, lol!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I had a scheduled induction at 5:30 am so we got up (after about and hours sleep) and I took a shower , did makeup, and curled my hair. There was absolutely no point in doing it though because after about an hour into everything I had cried and smeared all the makeup off. It was pointless for me to do all of that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I don't remember being concerned too much, but I was quite relieved when my doctor checked me two weeks before my due date and found I was already a 4. She scheduled me to be induced the next morning, so I didn't have to worry for that reason. Maybe you could pray for something similar. Being induced when you are already dialated that much does not hurt, especially since you want an epidural. :)

Also, it won't matter how much makeup you have on once he is born, you will glow.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Whit you are so cute. I hope you do have time to fix yourself up but I believe you are gorgeous even without it. Do take some with you for touch up because there will be photos and I am sure you will have more guests than you can imagine all to ooooh and aweeee over your precious little Levi. lol

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't know...it's really up to you. For me one child was born in the morning (8) and the other at night (8). I had a natural birth so I know the pushing would've messed my makeup up. When I look at the pictures, I see the baby and remember the day. Not the fact that I didn't look my "best". You're baby will not remember if you had make up on or not. Heck he'll see alot of you "undone" in the middle of the night/early morning. Our kids love us for who we are not what we look like. Ours are 13 & 10 and they don't see the flaws we see in ourselves!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have thought the same thing before. These are the pictures that I'll send out to everyone! I don't want to look like I just came through a car wash without a car!

When we moved into our new house, I didn't plan ahead like this and I wore a terrible "moving" outfit and no make up. Now, every time I look at the picture of my husband and me standing on the steps of our first home, all I see is my ugly outfit and blotchy skin.

This is definitely a valid concern!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Haha!! I think that I am going to put Chesley or my mom on make-up patrol when my time comes. It will be their job to make sure they do any touch ups necessary. When I come visit you I will make sure to tell you if you need to do a few touch ups before any pics are taken! hehe!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Absolutely! I took a shower and did my hair and makeup while I was having contractions 2 minutes apart with you. Plus, we had to drive 50 miles to the hospital. Isn't that normal?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I totally agree with you. I will be packing make-up in my "ready to go" bag. When I actually go through this experience. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Girl, I am the same way!! I don't like to be seen or photographed with no make up :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Nope. Not at all.

I did, however, get in a quick shower after my water broke w/ baby #2 (early a.m. before I'd showered for the day). Hubs thought I was insane, but I was so glad I did it.

You'll be beautiful no matter what - that post-baby glow is incomparable! :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I am with you. I don't go anywhere without makeup on. It just makes me feel nice. When it gets closer to "that time" I think you should just put a small makeup bag in your hospital bag so that you can apply it on the way if you need to! :0) Although, hopefully you won't be in too much pain to do it, you'll end up looking like a clown.

    ReplyDelete
  47. First of all, I think it's impossible for you to not look gorgeous - makeup or not. But, I'm with you - considering all of the photos that are taken that day, I think I'll want some measure of makeup on too - though I wonder how much I'll cry or sweat off!

Either way - I can't beleive they laughed at you. That's kind of harsh! Glad you have a good friend who gets ya. (o:

    ReplyDelete
  48. My sister had her third child not too long ago and she called me at 4:30am. "I'm in labor. But take your time, I am going to shower and freshen up first." And shower and freshen up she DID. Because I DID take my time getting to her house and she still wasn't ready to go! She showered, did her hair, put on her make up and I think she even made her husband a meal!! Then again, it was her third child so she did have a little experience knowing how much time she had to spare.

Still -- you better believe I'll be putting on make up in the car on the way to the hospital!!! haha.

I think your concern is completely legitimate!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I didn't really worry about the make-up, but I did blowdry and straighten my hair... and refused to put it up during delivery! I spent the 7 hours leading up to delivery sleeping in an upright-ish position (thank you, epidural) and so I was well rested... However, I'm someone who only wears makeup to church and out to nice places anyway...

but really, levi won't care... he'll see you without makeup at all those 3am feedings!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi I wouldn't worry if you go into labour in the middle of the night you will have plenty of time to get ready.

When I first starting going into labour it was 3a.m., We hung out at home timing contractions for a long time and when we figured it was time to go to the hospital I had a shower and got ready first and still had time to spare.

Good luck, I am sure you will look beautiful in the pictures no matter if you have mascara or not.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I've not had a baby yet but I CERTAINLY agree with you!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. you know i've never really thought about it until just now!! when i have a baby, IF i'm even able to, i'm going to make sure my hair is flat ironed within an inch of it's life and that i have foundation (dont' normally wear it but uh, i think labor is call for bringin' out the big guns) mascara, my eyebrows are colored in, and bronzer. oh and chapstick. and i'm bringin' the makeup bag with me. i do NOT want the photos of the biggest day of my life to look horrible!! the least i can do is put makeup on. i may be bloated, exhausted, sweaty, but my eyes will POP! :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Just remember - If you have a ruff labor and sweat a lot your make will run down your face - so wear waterproof :)

I have a great picture of my g-friend in labor and in between contractions she was applying lipstick - It was hilarious.

    You are so adorably funny!

    ReplyDelete
  54. This has been a concern of mine forever! And now that I am only a couple of weeks away from having the baby, it is even more important to me! I have made my husband promise that the ONLY pictures that will be sent out to friends and family will be ones where I have fixed my hair and makeup. I will be purchasing waterproof mascara just for the occassion.

    ReplyDelete
  55. With our last one, not so much time. I had cleaned the house, cooked and felt funny. I called the dr. and he said stop by the office and when he checked me his eyes got huge. I was dilated past 7 and he wanted me to go right away. I left my contacts in b/c I don't like my picture with my glasses on.
By the time the baby comes, you don't care but as soon as they let me I was in the shower and blow drying my hair and putting on makeup for visitors.

    ReplyDelete
  56. LMAO! While with my first (second was a scheduled C) I was in full labor and made sure my butt got in the shower AND shaved before I'd let anyone take me to the hospital...just a reminder. I had less then 3 hours labor and pushed for 20 mins....I almost had to have a at home delivery....now in the end what more important? Dr's or makeup LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  57. You are a riot!! My girl friend jumped in the shower to shave her legs right after her water broke because she hadn't been able to reach her legs in weeks and had been neglecting them. Her husband was downstairs yellin' at her to get moving. Too funny!

    ReplyDelete
  58. if that happens, you can put your makeup on right after you have the baby, before everyone comes in. My step sister had her mom or someone do her makeup/hair right after she had the baby. Like in the room and then when I got there she was like all glamorous. I'm definitely going to be doing that before I have visitors. Us white,pale/light haired people have ZERO pigment and with no makeup you can't even tell that I have eyelashes. I feel your pain.

    ReplyDelete
  59. YES!!! I made sure to have a pedicure, and my legs shaved REALLY good. With baby #2, it was in the middle of the night, and I got up, called the doctor, shaved my legs in the shower, and then woke up my husband...the pictures turned out good after the baby arrived...well as good as you can after a bowling ball pops out, that is...

    ReplyDelete
  60. HECK YES! My first pregnancy, I look like CRAP in the pictures. At the time, the thought of looking good never crossed my mind. BUT the second time, I was ready! Those pictures will be around for YEARS, you want and NEED to look good. My opnion. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  61. I think you will probably look back on this post and laugh. Someday. Once you go into labor, you might put on make-up, shave your legs, do your hair, and then you will wonder why after it is all said and done. The great this about babies is they love their mommy just because they are their mommy - no strings attached.

My biggest fear was that my water would break in the middle of target or something. Starting a like week 36, i refused to wear skirts or dresses :-).

    ReplyDelete
  62. It's not a concern for me when we do have kids, but I don't wear makeup now really except for one or two days a week. I used to wear it all the time, but I get distracted easily.

Don't forget to pack dry shampoo to keep your hair nice! :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Eep! I definitely want to make sure that my makeup & hair is done so I look put-together & not like a HOT MESS. Make-up is definitely going into my bag when the time(s) comes!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. oh. yes. I agree with you!! I also was concerned about making sure my legs were shaved and toenails done!
I also brought breath spray for when I couldn't have a mint...
I ended up having a c-section and when they rolled me into my room the nurses all commented on me still having good hair and make up!
    I can be done.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Unfortunately, what we want to happen, and what will happen, are two different things. Labor & delivery are such a time....unless you have a scheduled c-section.

Levi won't care what you look like, he only needs to feel/smell you and be with you and your husband. God put you and this baby together because you are the perfect mom for this little boy.

However, I totally did the pedi/mani. I can't say I had the energy to think about makeup after an exhausting all nighter (as in my case). Nah. Not to mention his eyesight isn't the best at that point in life! HA!

Seiouely, plan for it as best you can. But accept what happens and what you are able to comfortably do for yourself and him. This little one comes first now...

    God bless!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I don't think you'll need any makeup, but put some in your bag. That way you'll have it if you want it. I wouldn't bother putting it on before labor, because if you don't sweat it off, you'll surely cry it off!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I definitely want my hair to look decent! Right now it is short and I am growing it out.. easier once the baby comes.... but it is naturally curly and if I dont get to straighten it before I give birth.. pics with be scary... and my MeMa always says... everyday... a lil bit of powder, blush and lipstick... makes all the difference! I agree:)
    I know you'll look beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Oh Lord when I have kids I will be sure to make sure my makeup and hair is done....those are some important pictures!!! Im right there with you

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm not sure about this one, but I say just do what you want to do...and if you have time/energy/sanity to do it on the big day! :)

  70. You are so funny, but I too am worried about make up all the time! Not because I want to always look put together, but because I seriously look like a MAN without makeup on. I'm a blond, with blond eyebrows and blod eyelashes. I dissapear without it!

So when the day comes when I get to do my "thang" I will definately bring makeup. I never take my eye makeup off at night just in case someone comes over late or early the next morning before I have time to refresh!

    I'm pathetic.

  71. Whatever you do to your hair, you'll have to re-do it after the birth. I looked like I'd been dragged through a hedge backwards after having both of mine and I'm sure I'll look no better this time round (I'm expecting my third child in July). Labour is a bit more athletic than walking down the aisle! You'll have a lovely natural glow after giving birth anyway. Besides, you can always redo your makeup for the photos after the work is over and you have your darling son alongside you. The way you look will be the last thing on your mind...all you will care about is what little Levi looks like!

    Kind regards,
    Paula

  72. Perhaps I'm still a natural beauty. I never wear makeup and so the thought hadn't crossed my mind.

  73. Heck yes! Whenever I give birth I will most definitely be taking my makeup and CHI to the hospital with me!!! :)

  74. I love you Whitney Dawn. I don't go anywhere without makeup either. And I agree that it would be like going down the isle without makeup. Umm those are gonna be some pretty important pictures!! (And when you need a baby photographer...you know who to call..ME! love ya! You are beautiful!

  75. I labored at home for several hours in the bath tub and after the bath I took a hot shower and YES did my hair. Although I am not one to run around in make every day of my life. I wear it when I go out on the town or have a special event that calls for it so I did not want to come off phony in my first pictures with my baby.

Giving birth to a living being is hard work and I wanted to be real. I wanted to be able to show my daughter one day that yes mommy looks like hell but look at you. So beautiful and so totally worth it.

Do what you think is best sweetie!! If you want make up then wear it.

  76. It wasn't a concern with my twins but after looking back at the photos it sure was a concern with my other two pregnancies.

That said, you just need to worry about BRINGING your hair and makeup stuff (and having a good pedi) because it won't matter when you are in actual labor...but when you are done it will matter for the photos!

  77. I put on make-up, fixed my hair and made sure I had a tube of lipstick nearby when I went into labor with my first child. I made the trip to the hospital all dolled up. 8 hours later I had chewed off the lipstick, my hair was a sweaty sticky mess and I didn't care one bit. Do what makes you feel best and forget what anyone else says. It's your day too! Baby Lovie will love you no matter what you look like. You're his mommy after all!

  78. When Abby came it was a scheduled induction so I looked nice, make-up, cute ponytail. I woke up the day of my induction with Ruthie in labor. I could barely stand to take a shower, get ready and walk to the car. Putting on make-up and fixing my hair was unthinkable. It will probably depend on the circumstances.

  79. I never go out without my makeup either and really I was quite horrified when the time came to give birth and my water broke at 3am and I had no make up, no hair done, nothing !!! But, I never thought once about that until the entire event was over and I was looking at pictures and I was thinking, I look so much prettier when I have my makeup on. Oh well, next time, but the next time the same thing happened. I think that unless you have a very uneventful labor and delivery you won't even think twice if you have your makeup on our not. The only thing you will be thinking about is if baby Levi arrives safely, that he is healthy and that you survived the big day. Blessings to you !! Happy Half way mark. Elizabeth

  80. With my first I shaved my legs, fixed my hair and make up and by the time he was born my hair was a mess and the make up was gone. I didn't care it was over and I had my baby boy in my arms. With my second I was in the hospital for 8 days before he was born. I was pretty sick, but hubby kept me in clean beautiful nightgowns and kept my hair fixed the whole time. He was really sweet to me. So, I suppose it depends on the individual and the circumstances, but if you want to look pretty on birth day go for it.

  81. I really hadn't thought about this before I read this post, but now I would have to say I'M CONCERNED! Does that mean on top of packing comfy cut clothes, I need to prepare a little makeup bag as well? Because that would mean I'd have to make sure I bought double the makeup (& MAC is expensive!), just so I can always have one bag ready to go!

  83. Well, I hadn't really thought about it until now, but I think that I would be the same way. If Israel comes in the middle of the night, I don't know what I will do, because with short hair, it will be sticking up everywhere. I think I will figure something out!!!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I don't know of many people who would think about that but I know some who would. Everyone has their own idea about it.
I wouldn't think about that. I mean, that day is about the baby, no one is really going to be concerned whether or not you look picture perfect. You're going to be filled with ancipation and excitement about your new arrival.

My mom was in so much pain and unxpected things happened, so she wasn't prepared. My family looks back on those pictures with a mixture of emotions because I(a twin), almost died. We were 3 1/2 months early.

With a birth like that, it really puts life in perspective. All of a sudden makeup and hair aren't at the top of the list. :)

  85. I used to be that way and would not leave the house without my hair done or make-up on. But nowadays, I am a little laxed. Sometimes, I do not get dressed until 5 p.m. and I still put make-up on. Anyway, just get you some tinted moisturizer (by Stila) and some bronzer by Mac and lip gloss and you will be fine!!! It is okay to want feel pretty and look your best!!!

  86. HECK YES!! It was a major concern to me. Luckily I had a c-section and my hair and makeup were never outta place....just the way I like it. It is a day full of pics!!! You are not insane or CRAZY. Hey, I'll come to the hospital in the middle of the night and slap some makeup on your face while your labor begins. Really...I will! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  87. That was a total concern for me. Rest assurred that wether contractions start or your water breaks first, you'll most likely have plenty of time for primping. First time labors usually take a while.

  88. i am definitely a don't-leave-the-house-without-makeup kind of girl, but i don't know if i would be as concerned about that on the way to the hospital! i see all the pictures of new mothers with their babies, and i don't even notice the hair/makeup. and i ALWAYS notice that stuff. i always think the new mom looks great. and, baby levi will be stealing the show anyway!

  89. I'm with you! I would want to look pretty for my baby and all the pictures!

    ReplyDelete
  90. I totally agree with you. I am that girl also-who can't believe people don't want to look good when giving birth!!! :)

  91. I felt the same way. Before I went into labor. And sweated and puked and cried etc etc.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I guess I'm one of those crazies like you! ;) I made sure to have a manicure and a pedicure done for labor (I wanted something to look nice!) I did take a shower and had make up on. You may have plenty of time to get ready before your contractions get close. I can't remember which babies but I know for atleast a couple of babies I used waterproof mascara though it still ran down. I believe I learned to go easy with the eyeliner and mascara because it was going to run anyway. I look terrible (probably because my face looked swollen from all the fluid from the i.v.?) in all my birth pictures but maybe it would have been worse if I hadn't worn any! Afterwards I put make up on and I remember getting a compliment from my father-in-law that I looked pretty good for just giving birth!

  93. I didn't have much on with our first....just leftover makeup. (I did not look so hot)
Our second, I looked at my sister and said, "Hand me my makeup bag" I put a full face of makeup on ...then looked at my husband and said, "Now, I'm ready to push!" (I had much better pics. with our daughter)
Our Third baby I didn't care what I looked like afterwards....they had turned my epidural off and I was in pain. (sorry to tell ya)
The first two I was in NO pain, maybe that will make you feel better.

  94. I had both my boys here at home, (and plan to have our 3rd here as well, I'm 27 weeks pregnant now) so I just walked around and did my thing until them came, touched up my makeup and pulled my hair back, brushed my teeth, you know, the little things! I agree that it's nice to look "presentable", but the smile that beams when you hold your baby for the first time is so big you won't even notice the rest of your face!

  95. My first baby came very quickly and was three and a half weeks early. I had had a baby shower given for me that afternoon and went to the hospital shortly after I had unloaded all of my gifts. When the doctor came in, he commented, "It's been a long time since we delivered anyone in pearls!"

  96. I don't think you're silly at all for wanting to look good. My water broke around 8am, right after my husband left for work. while I was waiting for him to get back home to drive me to the hospital, I put my make-up on and fixed my hair. I wanted to look decent for all those pictures. I ended up with a C-Section so I didn't sweat any of it off! This was an important issue for me so I totally understand where you're coming from.
