Cheesy yet Fantastic.

This past weekend I was under the weather, in a pregnant kind of way, and watched countless numbers of made for TV Christmas movies.

And when I say countless, I mean countless.

The two channels I watched incessantly were ABC Family and The Hallmark Channel (which we pay for year round simply so I can watch the Christmas movies during the Holiday Season). It’s true.

The cheesier that movie, the better. The more unrealistic the story, the better.

No matter how many versions of “girl brings boyfriend home to meet the family for Christmas and predictable shenanigans ensue” or “girl falls in love with hometown boy when she reluctantly goes back for Christmas” movies they make, I continue to watch with glee as if the idea were completely original and thought provoking. It never gets old!

I’m a sucker.

I mean seriously, what says Christmas like a girl getting sucked into a snow globe? Or a Christmas card to a soldier bringing true love to the lumberjack’s daughter? Or the ghost of a mom coming back to be with her family for Christmas? Or Sabrina the Teenage Witch kidnapping A.C. Slater so that her family thinks she actually has a boyfriend?

And what is absolutely captivating is the towns these people live in. They are small villages where-everybody-knows-your-name, and the streets are glistening with Christmas lights. Everyone roams the town streets greeting one another and helping those in need. There is a blanket of snow covering every square inch and continues to fall through Christmas morning. The entire town attends the Christmas Eve service at the Church and they sing carols while holding hands and smiling. It’s perfect, really.

If you haven’t tuned in to these exceptional Christmas movies this season, well….shame on you.

What is your favorite made for TV Christmas movie? I guarantee you I have seen it! :)

  3. Ha! I love the A.C. Slater kidnapping movie! I thought I was the only one who'd seen that!!!

I know its old school, but I still love A Mom for Christmas. You know, with the store mannequin?

And as for you comment yesterday, hilarious! I can't believe we both thought about opening apron businesses (Annie's Aprons). It's so crazy how we haven't spoken in years, but we still share so many similar experiences! If you don't already have it, buy The Apron Book by EllynAnne Geisel--it's awesome!

  4. Oh I love Christmas movies so much. Cheesy or not, anything that makes me cry is good imo!

  5. I watch them all too. It drives my family of males crazy, but I cannot help myself. I have A LOT of favorites, but a newer favorite of mine is "Comfort and Joy" with Nancy McKeon. Have you seen that one? It's sort of like It's A Wonderful Life...She has a car accident and when she "comes to" she is married with children, but before the accident she was a single business woman. Anyway, I LOVE that one.

But like you, I'm a sucker for cheesy.

    Sigh...

My DVR is loaded with several I need to watch right now.;)

    God Bless,
    Amy:)

  7. I'm with The Pink Potpurri, even though it's not a made-for-tv movie, I watched The Family Stone (which was on TV, but I watched it on DVD) this past weekend and it is definitely one of my favorite Christmas-time movies! You laugh, you cry, and the dynamic between the actors in that movie makes them seem as if they are actually related. It's awesome!

  8. Oh my goodness...I thought that I was the only one who loved cheesy Christmas movies! I just watched "Holiday in Handcuffs" this weekend too...too funny!

  10. My all time favorite Christma movie is White Christmas. But, one that I saw on television first and is a great family one is All I Want for Christmas. It's about two kids who want their divorced parents back together for Christmas. The little girl in it is adorable.

I record them so I can watch them over and over...pathetic, I know! My all time favorite holiday movie is Home for the Holidays with Holly Hunter. It's more of a Thanksgiving movie but it is so funny, her family is so dysfunctional...it reminds me of my inlaws!!

  25. well...i heart the cheesy, totally predictable made-for-TV movies. they're the best! i love Three Days! It's got Kristin Davis in it. it's the one where her husband is a workaholic writer and takes her for granted and she's killed on Christmas Eve. but the husband gets a second chance at reliving the three days previous to her death. and he can't change the outcome, but he can make those three days incredible and like they should have been. it's so great!

  26. I haven't seen many, but one I remember watching a few years ago is The Christmas Blessing with Neil Patrick Harris. I think it is the sequel to the Christmas Shoes. Good stuff!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ooooh... I watched these too! I saw one where Jenny McCarthy was Santa's daughter. It was wierd, but totally sucked me in!

  31. I'm a sucker for these movies too! ONe of the many things I miss about no longer having Cable TV!!! I have two favorites: A Boyfriend for Christmas, and the other one isn't really that Christmasy, but it's called Lucky Seven I think. THe girl from Father of The Bride stars in it. Have you seen it? I LOVE that movie! And Patrick Dempsey - just can't go wrong with that!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Do you remember the Olson twin's movie "To Grandmother's House We Go"

That is totally my favorite TV Christmas movie since I was little. My sisters and I watched it over and over again - and it didn't even have to be Christmas. We made a special point of watching it around Christmas though!

PS: I don't include the classics like Frosty and Rudolph in the made for tv movies category even though they do show on tv each season.

Hope you are feeling a lot better though!!!! That Lime Lovey better take it easy on mama :)

  33. That's great! I didn't grow up watching the classic Christmas movies. But when I married Eric I was introduced to what he deems classic, and so we watch the following every year...
National Lampoons Christmas, Elf, and Home Alone

I think I should add a Hallmark movie or two the the list!

  34. I do the same thing with cheesy Lifetime movies. I watch every single totally predictable one they make no matter how many times I have already seen it!

    ReplyDelete

  39. I'm usually not a fan of made for tv movies....there is one however from a long time ago, probably 1990...It has Olivia Newton John and it's called A Mom for Christmas...It's about a store mannequin that becomes a mom for this family...you should check it out!

  40. I hear ya on the cheesy Christmas movies. They may be unoriginal, but they are just so dang enchanting and fun! I think Home Alone will always top my list of favorites. It instantly takes me back to my childhood when I see it. I watched that movie over and over and over - year round. I love the soundtrack to it, too! Elf is probably my #2 favorite because I friggin' love Will Ferrel. Hope you're feelin' better.

  45. Oh man! I'm right there with ya! I like that movie that comes on ABC Family's 25 days of Christmas every year where the woman works in a department store and she's some kind of perfume expert and she keeps putting a list in Santa's mailbox and she gets every single thing she asks for.

  46. Oh, I love all the Christmas movies, too. Every one of them. I think one of my favorites is "A Boyfriend for Christmas." I DVR all of them so I can watch them over and over!
