The Good, The Bad, and The Glamorous

I am a strong advocate of having guns in your house at all times. You never know when someone could break into your home and try to hurt you or your family. If you were weaponless, most likely, you would leave the scene either kidnapped, hurt, or something much worse.

I grew up in a house full of guns and my Dad taught my brother and me gun safety at a very young age. We did not even point toy guns at each other…that was how aware we were of the potential danger.

Now that I am an adult, married, and living on my own, Husby and I have guns all throughout the house. We have them strategically hidden but with easy access for us. They are placed entirely out of children’s reach, and in places that most adults would probably not ever find.

There have been several times when Husby is at the school at night, and I hear strange noises while home alone. When this happens, I grab a hand gun and place it on a table beside me, so that if needed, I can defend myself. Remember how paranoid I am when driving home alone? Well, multiply this by 70 when I am home alone!

But for good reason. Let me share:

When we lived in an apartment, once a man UNLOCKED our door and came right in! I was in the bedroom and immediately grabbed the gun. I walked out and asked him what he was doing in my apartment and he apologized and left. He claimed he was a maintenance man, but how can I ever really be sure of that? For all I know, he saw my gun and knew he’d better leave.

And we never even CALLED for a maintenance man...

If I had not been sportin' my gun, maybe the Glamorous Life of a Housewife would have ceased to exist. How sad.

Last year, my whole family went through the Concealed Carrier’s course, so that we would be licensed to carry in public legally. At the end of the lesson, we had to shoot several rounds to prove our gun competency.

I'm the one in the green shirt & red hat. Check out my cousin next to me. She's gettin' with it!

I have yet to send in my paperwork to get my actual license because it costs $100, and I usually come up with better things to do with extra income (after all, we ARE a poor Medical-Student family)!

But I need to get it sent in so that I can carry THIS in my purse:

HOW CUTE IS THAT! It is called The Pink Lady, and I love her so.

Feeling scared when running to the grocery store after dark all alone? Roll with me and all your fears will subside. I'm out to protect all the Glamorous Housewives! :)
I am a modern day homemaker with a passion for family, cooking, celebrating, decorating, travel, and memory making! The Lord has blessed me with the desires of my heart in my husband and our two sons. We recently built our dream home and cultivating a loving and happy haven for my family is where I find so much joy.

  1. What a difference a day makes in your post subjects! I must admit that guns scare me. We never had them in the house growing up and Dennis doesn't like them either. Now, my son is another thing. And, I do believe it is probably your brother and father who ignited that passion in him! Gotta love your family for their diverse interests.

  2. Wow, I like this post...because I am scared when I am home alone too. I was very against them for a long time, but I met someone who changed my mind. I really like this post of yours. Why are big girls like us scared to be home alone? Is it the news? Love, MG

  3. i'm with you! i grew up learning how to fire a gun and i know what to do and what not to do. i'd like to have at least one gun in the house, but my husband disagrees. he has never used a gun. i'm glad that you are able to protect yourself.

  4. Wow...I am from Massachusetts and it's not usual for people to have guns (except for criminals or cops). I never really thought about having one.

I can see your point though for protection but I think I would be too scared of having one in the house or on me.

  5. Are you from Texas?? :)

I grew up with guns in the house, my dad and brothers used them for hunting. We were taught gun safety at a very young age, so guns do not really bother me, but now, we have 3 little people in the house, and I do want my husband to keep them hidden- You never know what those kids will do.

This spring, my dad let the kids shoot his hand gun at a snake...we had a very serious talk about safety!

You crack me up though...from froofy pink things, fall decor, and yummy recipes to...target practice!

  6. Guns also scare me but I think that is because of a very bad thing that I was a part of when I was in HS in Colorado..maybe someday I will conquer my fears. I am glad that you feel safe with them and that is all that matters.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Thank you so much for this post. I have been so scared of guns and never allowed my husband to bring his hunting guns into our house. But this post has changed my point of view about guns.

  8. I am a firm believer in having guns also.. Girl. It might be an Oklahoma and Texas thing..lol.

I also took the course but never bought the paperwork..

Just like this post..that Pink Lady is to fun..

  9. Oh my, I need that pink gun! So cute!

Growing up, my parents didn't have guns, and I never really had strong feelings about them one way or the other. My husband has a gun and a concealed weapons permit, but the thing that really convinced me that I should have a gun was when my sister woke up one night at 2am to the sounds of a man trying to break into her bedroom window. Yikes!

  10. wow...i think i'm now offically scared of you. knowing you have that in your purse, i will probably stay at least 10 feet away from you if we ever meet up in person :)

we have a few of those bad boys placed in our home for the exact same reasons. although i've never shot a gun, so maybe i should go practice!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I am scared of everything also....my husband and I shoot guns just so I am always in practice. There is one by our bed and others spread throughout our house as well. None of these are loaded but the bullets are very close. I am scared of my own shadow and have wipped out a gun before as well....It think it is great for women to be aware of guns and their safety. My husband laughs because he says me with a gun will scare anyone away!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I've never been interested in guns but my husband is. We only own one for protection although he does hunt with his Dad's guns.

My protection is my dog. When my husband used to work nights I wasn't scared at all because my ginormous dog was always there protecting me. So I've never even touched my husbands gun!

Now if my husband would have brought home a pink handgun, well I would have been all over that!

  13. Guns scare the be-jeezes out of me, but, my husband has them, and, I admit, when he's out of town or something, I know where they are and I know if I need to protect myself, I can.

How scary that some guy just randomly came into your apartment!!

  15. I grew up around guns in the house as well...my dad had a shotgun by the back door and one under his bed. Of course, the ammo was hidden and out of reach. Now that my husband has a handgun, it makes me really nervous when he gets it out and cleans it or takes it to shoot. I don't know if I just don't trust him with it or what. I'm glad we have it though...it's a 40 caliber so aim doesn't really matter, it will just leave a bigger hole. (My comment is slightly disturbing..sorry!)

  16. I've always wanted to be just like you with the whole gun thing. I remember when you guys got your concealed licenses last year, and I've been bugging brian about getting mine since then. He wants his, too, but I don't think he's as excited about it as I am. Oh, that pink gun alone is enough reason to do it!!!!

  18. One of my biggest fears...my son has never played with toy guns or water guns...just something about thinking guns are toys is the reason why I never let him. He knows how dangerous they are. After being reluctant I allowed my hubby to get one for our home; our car was broken into twice in our old home and we needed it for the same reason. A few of my girlfriends went to the gun range and I was sooo scared to shoot it...we have a 9mm and I shot a 22; the shell casings are HOT...maybe we were not really dressed for shooting guns...but I definately need more practice...

    ReplyDelete
  19. I've been thinking about taking a gun safety course...

I think you just helped me make up my mind!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I also took the conceal to carry class and my license is waiting on me in Oklahoma...I have to go pick it up in person when we go home in November. BUT one of my best friends back home (that took the course with me) is obsessed with the pink lady too! She wants it so bad. It's entirely way too cute. I asked for a gun for Christmas last year, but nobody wanted to get one for me ;(

    ReplyDelete
  21. What a refreshing view on this topic! I couldn't agree more. I feel that teaching our kids the right lessons about guns and gun safety makes a whole lot more sense than just saying "guns are dangerous" and never exposing them. Kids are going to be curious and you're better off teaching them that guns are for hunting, sport and (in extreme situations)self-defense. Teach them how to safely use them so they are comfortable around them and they won't have a reason to investigate on their own and possibly cause harm.

  22. Thanks for your post. I have been looking for a gun light enough to carry (with the permission of my carry & conseal of course). This one looks perfect, will have to check it out.

  24. Your family sounds a lot like mine! Growing up my Dad always had guns in the house, but my brother and I knew never to touch them. We got in trouble if we even pointed toy guns at each other or anyone else.

Most of my family has concealed carry permits and my Dad is always on me to get mine, I still haven't yet though.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Smart woman, you are! And I love how your dad educated you, teaching that guns are weapons - and impressing upon you the gravity of the consequences.

Like many of the other commenters here, I've no fear of having them in my home, either. But then, I'm a girl outta Texas who grew up around them (and had parents who enforced safety - and respect for guns as weapons), as well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well, you know what I always say, "If you're going to carry a gun in your purse, it might as well be a cute one." ;)

I need to do this as well...My husband works in "the hood" so to speak, so he got his license to carry one...Not a pink one though...a more manly version, of course.;)

    God Bless,
    Amy:)

  27. I laughed when I was reading this post. I know how to shoot a gun and we have one in the house too. People find this shocking if they learn this about me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. You are too cute! My Dad and Aunt both have their concealed licenses. We had a friend in special weaponry in the marines who took a bunch of us and friends out shooting one day! It was so much fun! We shot all sorts of guns that we were and probably not supposed to have :) Hubby keeps saying we need to find the picture of me down on the ground shooting an m16 :) But we've both talked since then that we need to re-learn it again!

    ReplyDelete
  29. My husband has his concealed weapons permit, and carries a gun. I don't like it. At all. I've never shot a gun, and I never plan to.

I've worked in the social work/corrections field a very long time, and I know the odds of shooting someone you know over some terrorist at the movie theater.

He loves to shoot as a hobby, so I really don't step in, but I do when it comes to carrying his gun when he's out with me, or going into other people's homes, etc.

I just can't get behind it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. My dad was a state police office, now currently retired. We grew up knowing how to shoot--and I think it is a must, especially for women. So, kudos to you for having guns and knowing how to use them!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm with you 100%, we women need to learn to protect ourselves! My husband works out of state so I'm home alone. I was raised in a family that had guns for hunting and protection so it's only natural for me to have them. I also have two big dogs which is very comforting, more so than the guns so if you are still scared I suggest getting a nice big dog! :)They are great company and their bark alone is enough to scare anyone away. :)

  32. I am SO surprised by the positive comments by all. And shocked by Whitney's post - but in a GOOD way. I live in a rural area and we all take our safety for granted out here. We have a gun safe full of hunting rifles and shotguns. I can't remember ever shooting a hand gun but am thinking I'll learn! I'm against gun control and think education is the answer. I'm just surprised that there are GLAMOROUS women out there who feel the same way! You go girls!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow, totally surprised to see this post after what you normally have here.

I did not grow up around guns and I admit that they scare me. My husband has brought up getting one for our home, but I've alway brushed it off. Maybe it is something to consider.

In the meantime I have my two dogs to protect me.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Whitney ~ I'm so with you. We have guns in our house too. Mine would probably be shakin if I had to actually use it, but I know I could. Living in the country tho, I feel a little safer. But the nut cases are everywhere!

    Love the pink gun!

    Hugz,

  35. I have my own 22 and a revolver. I'm a good aim too, so yeah, STAY OUT OF MY HOUSE and land.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i have a gun license, and although i haven't had time to perfect my skills bc of work responsibilities and scheduling issues, i fully plan on taking advantage of the nearing winter months to spend time at the range. i am fully for the use of guns- BY QUALIFIED AND LICENSED INDIVIDUALS. that is the key. my husband and i also agree that having protection in your own home is a good idea. i am a small person, 5'6 and 110, and couldn't hurt a fly. i've tried self-defense classes and martial arts and i am just bound to be a weaker person- which is why i think a gun would be a good choice for me.

and i agree that the 'pink lady' is cute! although i think i'll stick to grocery shopping in the daytime/crowded places, rather than carry a gun in my purse. for some reason i just don't trust myself with that one- i lose EVERYTHING!

    ReplyDelete
  37. What state do you live in. My husband is a police officer in maryland and it's super hard really not possible to get a concealed carry lic. here. Mostly on cops carry. we have a few in our house too!

    ReplyDelete
  38. We don't have guns in our house simply because they're REALLY expensive. We aren't opposed to it, though, but I think we'll try to get some training on using them and stuff before we buy one. My grandad is a member of the NRA and has a concealed carrier license or whatever. He's fancies himself a cowboy :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. You go, girl. We don't have guns in our home right now, but I totally respect and appreciate the right to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I pray God will keep me safe, because I am not one to want a gun in our house. This was a bone of contention when we first married because my hub. is a former police officer and wanted one. I know he would be safe with one, but with three little boys who are curious-I don't want a gun near them. My boys play with toy guns and water guns, and I'm sure when they are older, we'll revisit the subject.

Wait. Did you say "Pink Gun?" I have a pink tool box, and vaccume-maybe I need a pink gun to coordinate with all my stuff...

  41. This post and the comments are awesome. I'm so glad to see that so many ladies out there are willing to educate themselves, and their children, about guns- about how to use them, about gun safety, and about the consequences of improper use. If a person is going to use a gun to protect themselves, it is so important that they know how to use it properly- because if you don't know how to use it, it's not going to do you a lick of good and you could actually end up hurting yourself rather than defending yourself. Makes me pumped up to get back in the range! :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. You are so funny! I would have never guessed that you would be a gun person! My hubby has wanted a hand gun since before we got married and really wants one now to have in our home for safety. I am not against this at all but we just haven't gotten around to actually doing it. And to be honest, guns scare me. I would be afraid that a bad guy would come in my house and I would try to defend myself and he would take the gun from me and shoot me with it. How bad would that suck to get shot w/ your own gun?!?!?!

Love the pink one though - I have a girlfriend who has one like that - too cute!

I am sure one of these days we will get one for me....

    ReplyDelete
  43. With your passion and love for guns, and my complete hatred towards them, it's hard to believe we're friends. Although, the pink gun is mighty tempting. : )

  44. I'm not sure how to thank her, but i got the sweetest card from Cari today. Please tell her thank you for me. It means a lot that she is praying for me and thinking about me. And, tell her that I certainly remember her and her two precious little girls :) So sweet of her!

  45. I wish I was more educated in regards to guns/gun safety. I have only shot a shotgun while skeet shooting.

I bet it sure is empowering knowing you not only know how to shoot, but the confidence in knowing where they are, and that you are able to protect yourself.

p.s. that pink gun is the CUTEST!

(STYLISH AND SAFE??? how can you go wrong?) :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Good for you! I have never had an experience with guns, but it only makes sense to take a class to better prepare myself. That is so scary about somebody walking into your apartment!

  47. You crack me up! You and your pink lady. Maybe the next $100 you will make off of your ads can go toward your license!

  48. Wow! You are so bad a**! I too grew up around guns and learned at an early age how to be gun safe.

  49. I enjoyed this post and LOVE your gun!

We plan to get a couple in the future and I will definitely consider that one.

    Your blog is awesome!

  52. I know how to shoot a gun, I have shot a gun, but there will never be a day one is welcomed in my house! I have known to many people to fall victim to their OWN gun that was later used against them. However, to each their own :) But there will never be guns in my home or in a house my children play in :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't think I'll ever own a gun, because I'm EXTREMELY accident prone, but if I did, I'd want a pink one like that!

I've had someone try to get in while I was home (luckily he was just drunk and thought he was at a friend's house in another state) but I don't think I'd have the guts to do what you did. You're a total badass!

  54. the Glam Housewife aka Annie, aka, Bonnie, aka any number of others...
    hurrah for you.

I was about 25, when I got my first gun. I lived alone and the Rainbow people were "gathering" in the valley. This back in the big hippy days. My brother was more than happy and proud to help me buy and learn to shoot and handle it properly. I got a Ruger 22 because I was not comfortable with a handgun. I also "own" a shotgun which I've never shot.

    Pink is an amazing color.

  55. Cu-yuu-ute! Wow...Jay says that I have to learn how to use a gun--that frightens me a little, but maybe not so much if it was pink! ;)

    Have a great day!

  56. You did a wonderful job with this post. You definately made your case and your point in a very logical and rational manner.

I found your blog from others that I read. I like your style and will be back.

BTW, I too grew up with guns and gun safety. Mine little friend isn't pink but it would certainly get the job done.

    Take care!

  57. So, I was reading your post and home alone and I read the comment about a man walking in your house and I hear something downstairs. I thought to myself, great . . . here I sit looking at a blog post about a gun and all I have to defend myself is a computer mouse and a laptop. I think I'll go take some shooting lessons this weekend and think about getting a firearm. Our house alarm just doesn't seem like enough after reading this post. :-)

  58. You go you pistol packin' diva!

After reading many of the responses, it just goes to prove that we are afraid of what we do not know.

    Education is key.

I need to target shoot more, I'm not the best shot. I actually do better with my bow and arrow, lol!

  59. I came across your blog this evening and was so thrilled to see this post. We are a family of 3 and all of us own our own guns and are extremely strict on gun safety. My husband has a HK-19, I shoot an AR-15 and our 7 year old daughter loves her PS-90. We also have several others that are for protection and are in our home where we can find them. I've been debating on carrying one full time but maybe I'll hurry up and get on it!! Love your blog!!!

  60. I have never really thought that much about owning a gun or even my husband owning one. After reading your blog I have the desire to at least learn how to shoot one in case I would ever be put in a situation.
    Love your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Okay, a pink gun. Gotta have me one of those. Mfr please?

Reading the comments strike me funny. Same nation, but all of us have different sentiments about it, but none of us disagrees that another can have them. I love that. I visit some UK blogs and newspapers and the comments there concerning the 'gun culture' in the US are quite funny to me. I grew up with guns in the house and VERY strict rules. We have guns now, but no handguns. Again, our kids know the rules...they are more afraid of what we would do to them if they were caught with one than the temptation to check them out is. They are older now, so that helps. But my husband showed them to the kids. They had 'cowboy' guns, water guns, lego guns and sticks. I just think there is something inherently 'little boy' about guns. But they have to have the respect and discipline drilled into them from the start.

I am a proud Army mom...my oldest is a mental health specialist. Someone asked me recently what my son does and I told her that he's into guns and drugs ;)...but he's in the Army so that's his job. No idea where the comment came from, it just came out of my mouth...my middle son just turned 21 and will be buying himself a gun and taking lessons, concealed carry permit. CO is an open carry state, so he might take it to class...not a big deal to me or many of his friends. He already carries a knife and frankly, if I start riding the bus home from work, I'll get a police strength pepper spray. Knives are too close, so it's either pepper spray or gun...pepper's easier to conceal. My work location is not far from two homeless shelters and there are some unsavory types hanging around at times. As I am alone in the office quite a bit, I refuse to take chances.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I went through the conceal carry course about 12 years ago after my husband died. He had asked me to do so. It just adds to my safety since I live alone. I have 2 dogs and don't make it a practice to be out after dark, but if need be I can protect myself..the world has become a more dangerous place in the last few years. I carry a S&W 38.
