Tea Party for Your Nose

What will they come up with next?

How many of you fine folk have heard of a ‘Neti Pot’? It is hands down, the strangest thing to ever grace the shelves of pharmacies throughout the nation. It is designed to clear out your nasal passage to make your allergies and sinus problems better.

September is my least favorite month of all the months. It is the month that I sneeze, cough, hack and sneeze some more. I am deathly allergic to ragweed and September is the worst time of year for it. Most times, I feel like hibernating until the first official freeze.

Until I discovered the Neti Pot.

I was completely freaked out by it when my friend told me to use it. She told me to get the squirt bottle version, because it’s easier. I thought to myself, “oh, I can handle that – I use nasal spray sometimes…”, and then I opened the box.

The thing was the size of a can of diet coke. There was a line in the middle of the bottle marking how much to squirt in each nostril. Half of the bottle up each nostril. I thought I was going to die. There was NO way I was squirting that much water up my nose. No way. No how.

Until I sneezed 392 times in a row and decided it was time to give it a whirl.

You fill it with warm water, and pour a packet of solution stuff they give you inside to let it dissolve. It is a salt water type solution. Then you lean over the sink, open your mouth, BREATHE in and out, and commence to squirting.

As you squirt up one nostril, water and snot will drain out of your other nostril. It is completely un-lady like and disgusting, so I refuse to let Husby watch me. Plus, he makes me more nervous.

He ended up watching from the other room. Sneaky.

I love how this Reese-Witherspoon-lookalike is smiling and having the time of her life while doing the neti pot. Trust me, you will not look like this. If you're anything like me, your eyes will be the size of silver dollars, with tears streaming down them. It makes my eyes water every time. And you will NOT smile. You will have a major look of panic and hysteria plastered to your face.

Do NOT hold your breath (which is easy to do without realizing it), because all the solution will build up, not drain out the other nostril and will go in your mouth. You will then proceed to gag and come very close to throwing up because the taste is so horrible. Not that I know from experience or anything. So remember to breathe (if you are brave enough to try this in the first place).

The pressure is a little intense at first, but once it starts draining out, you feel instant relief.

Oh, neti pot - you have saved my life.

BE SURE TO CHECK BACK MONDAY FOR A FANTASTIC GIVEAWAY!!! And no, it will NOT be a neti pot. It's much more fun and fabulous. IT IS THE BEST GIVEAWAY YET! :)

  2. I've been wanting my hubby to try one ever since I saw it on Oprah. It's a bit scary and gross, but if it works, hey why not?

  5. I've used it, but if you have sensitive ears (which apparently I do), it is very painful!! My allergist suggested it to me, but said if I feel pain or pressure in my ears, I can't use it anymore because it can be damaging! So I can no longer enjoy the wonderful benefits of the neti pot, and have to suffer through the constant abuse of my sinuses.

  10. My Grammy told me about the Neti pot last time I was sick. The concept of the Neti Pot scares the crud out of me. I would have to be near death to try it I think.

    I'm also a bit of a baby....

    Way to be brave though girl. You're so strong. (o;

  11. I've heard of it, but never done it...I prefer good ole allergy pills that knock me out.

  12. I have never seen the Neti-Pot! I don't really have a problem with allergies, otherwise I'm sure I'd be first in line to buy it!

  13. poor thing :( i feel so sorry for you. there's no way i would squirt anything up my nose.

  16. I have never seen this exact device but my aunt does something similar. She say it on Dr. OZ (Oprah) - you get like a cup of water and pour the water up one nostril and then it comes out the other. She said the same thing you said about the pressure. I have not tried it yet b/c I am such a baby!!!

  17. LOL, I totally saw this on Oprah I think. I would have had to do it in a room by myself too at first, bc I would be cracking up, and snarfling, with water going everywhere with Hubby watching me.

  18. i love the neti-pot! Drew isn't allowed to come into the bathroom when I do it because I feel stupid... mostly because I always choke and don't look TOO attractive with water flowing out of my throat and nose. HA.
Anyways, glad you found it girl it's amazing!

  19. Only people with sinus issues will try that one-and that is me! I get so congested, I can't stand it! May be gross, but I think I need to fit in a trip to Target to pick one up stat!

  21. I still don't know if I could use it. Luckily I don't have nasal problems. & If you WERE to give on away on Monday I most certainly would NOT comment!! haha.. but I am looking forward to the giveaway!! Have a GREAT weekend!

  22. I was thinking I would totally try that until I read everyone's comments. I have sensitive ears and am prone to ear infections, so after reading what mollyandmarshal had to say, I think I'll pass.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Before neti pot I read where you stick your whole face in a bowl of saltwater and then breathe in through your nose a few times. I was desperate and tried it and it was a terrifying experience, like drowning in the comfort of your own bathroom....arghhhhhh.

  24. Nice visual with the photo. : ) Actually I HAVE tried the thing. I wonder if the sqeeze bottle works better that the netti-pot???
    So glad you found relief.

Glad you're feeling better - have a relaxing sneeze-free weekend!

  37. Wow! That makes me want to run to the pharmacy and pick me up a Neti Pot right now! Well, not for me, but for my husband. He too sneezes 394 times in a row...well at least six, but it's damaging to both of us, it hurts my ears!

So for the sake of my husband's nose and my ears, I think we'll give it a go! Ha! He just doesn't know it yet...wish me luck!
