The Luck of the Irish.

I may have red hair and white skin, but I am not Irish. And sadly enough, I don’t have an ounce of their luck.

Last night, husby and I went out to eat at a new restaurant in the nearby town, Chipotle. Husby has wanted to eat there since it opened and since we were free last night, we decided it was time to consume that huge burrito-o-goodness. I made a few stops to finish up a ‘pregnancy care package’ that I am sending to sis-in-law and after that, we headed home.

And were almost killed.

Well, probably we were.

We exited the highway and yielded right to turn onto the road to take us home. There was a car speeding past us, so we were almost at a dead stop waiting. The lady in the car behind us was looking left for other cars coming the entire time and instead of stopping to look, she kept going ahead full force. And creamed the back of our car. She hit us going probably 30 mph while we were essentially stopped.

I was leaning up in my seat telling a big dramatic story to husby when it happened. My head came within inches of the windshield. Husby’s glasses were thrown off his head and our pop that was sitting in the cup holders with lids tightly secured, were thrown off and into our laps.

My initial reaction was to be furious. We just got our car out of the shop from a big storm accident about a month ago. I made up my mind a long time ago, that most women should not be driving. Every wreck or accident I have been a part of, involves a woman driver. I know, I know, I’m a woman too…but I just don’t trust us behind the wheel as much as most men. I jumped out of the passenger’s seat, looked at the back of our car and sighed out loud. I think I even said, “great – this is just perfect!”

Then… I looked at the woman who had just hit us. She wasn’t even looking at us; she was turned around fidgeting with something in the back seat. That made me even more irritated. For crying out loud, she wasn’t even concerned with if we were alive or not! I wanted some deep sympathy since my cranium was almost thrown through a glass wall!

I looked back at our poor car feeling sorry for ourselves and then glanced back at the woman. I noticed a car seat. Instantly, my attitude changed. I ran over and asked if her baby was okay. By the grace of God, she was.

Husby phoned the cops and within four minutes there were three police cars, an ambulance and a fire truck. With all the hoopla and emergency vehicles, I started to get a little anxious. Someone could have been seriously hurt – or killed. It really made me stop and think.

(Yes, I was snapping pictures of the chaos with my phone. Hey, a new blog is always in the back of my mind. tee hee)

The Lord has spared my life in two serious wrecks throughout my (almost) twenty-five years, and every time something like this happens, I am reminded of how fragile our mortality is. I stopped what I was doing and thanked the Lord that it was just our car that was banged up – and not us. I thanked Him for keeping that sweet baby safe in the car behind us, and for keeping a constant hand of protection on us every day.

For the rest of the night, I kept rubbing my head and reminding husby how it was almost smashed through the windshield, and how he was almost a widower. Hey, I wanted as much sympathy as possible. Is that so bad?

I’m glad I’m not dead. I have so much more to live, dream and aspire before I go through those pearly gates. And of course, so much more to blog about!! :)

Oh, and I promise not to blog about our car-happenings again for a LONG time. I'm sick of them.
I am a modern day homemaker with a passion for family, cooking, celebrating, decorating, travel, and memory making! The Lord has blessed me with the desires of my heart in my husband and our two sons. We recently built our dream home and cultivating a loving and happy haven for my family is where I find so much joy.

  3. Oh wow! Glad you two (well, four) are safe! It kills me that moms (espeically WITH little ones in the car) don't take extra precautions when driving. I hope that I never get in too much of a hurry to not pay attention like that. You might be a little sore today--and yes, no more car-accident-related stories, ever! :)

  4. oh my gosh!! So glad you all are OK!!! That can be soo scary! I was in a really bad accident at 16...but i DID hit the windshield and I don't remember any of it. I am so glad the car was injured and not the important things.... :)

  6. Holy cow, you must be sore today with that type of impact. I'm so sorry that happened and am even happier you are here to tell us about it.

Wow, it's so scary out there.

  7. Your mom's comment made me smile. : ) When I got your text last night I gasped louder than I have ever gasped before. And as I was replying I was in a constant state of murmuring - a nervous murmur. Bran made me calm down and tell him what happened. And then I called my mom. You had me scared to pieces.

  10. I'm very happy that you are all okay, probably sore, but okay.

I do take exception with the 'woman driver' comment. I totally disagree. There are good and bad woman drivers, as with men.

Anyhoo, I'm glad no one was hurt.

  12. Whew! You guys are really having some car drama this week! I'm so glad you and your husband were alright.. and the woman and her child.

I nearly wrecked this morning on the freeway when a woman (mom, in minivan, screaming at kids) almost changed lanes into the side of my car. Maybe women just drive around with a lot more on thier minds (you know that whole multitask thing). I guess men, and the fact that they can only concentrate on one thing at time, do have the advantage in driving. :)

  13. thanks for stopping by my blog earlier. I LOVE YOURS!

I'm sorry about the car accident - but you are so right - at least you are okay! Women usually have so much on their minds - and with a baby in the car... maybe she got distracted by crying or something. It only takes a second. Man! Glad it turned out the way it did for you guys and her. scary stuff!

I'll be stopping by frequently to check up on ya. I, too, wish I could be a stay at home mom someday!

  14. Oh my gosh, Whitney! You're life is never uneventful is it? Good luck with the car repairs, I hate all things having to do with car maintenance or repair. UGH! And, by the way, check out my new blog!

  15. I ended up at your blog from I don't know where...but I love it and bookmarked it...if you don't mind. I'm so glad you're ok...I've seen my daughter drive like that, not paying attention and it drives me nuts! But you can't tell a 19 year old anything!

    Hugz,
    Michele

  16. So glad you were all safe. Wrecks scare me so much. i hope you aren't feeling too sore today and are just taking it easy!

I had a little old lady (I swear she was Mother Teresa) hit me in my neighborhood last year. She was taking flowers to someone in the hospital and they fell over, she had bent over to pick them up. How can you be mad at someone like that!

BTW - I am an Okie too! :)

  20. Hey Whitney!

I just found your blog through another and had to pop in and say hi as a fellow redhaired homemaking loving lady! ;o) I'm so glad, praise Jesus, that you guys are all right! That is terribly frightening! I remember my husband and I were once side-swiped by a tractor trailer...it was the scariest thing!

What a cute blog you have...I'll definitely be back for more visits, lady-o!

  21. Wow i'm glad no one got hurt. My hubs was in an accident on the freeway, he was at a dead stop and someone ran into not him but a car a few cars back and caused a chain reaction. The person was going 75 and it was bad enough to total our car. He wasn't seriously hurt but there are a few things wrong thanks to it.

Things like that really make you realize how fragile life is and make you so grateful for it.
